Lacrosse Drops First-Ever Home Game to #9 Loyola, 15-8

Final score from Oosterbaan: Michigan 8  #9 loyola 15

Michigan could have easily given up after being down 10-2 at one point, but they fought back and fought until the end letting the fans go home encouraged.

This was Michigan's first-ever home game, and their first and only home game at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse this season. Next up Michigan will face conference opponent bellarmine on Saturday, March 17 at 3pm at Michigan Stadium. Lacrosse season ticket holders like me are geeked as hell.

                        Updated ECAC Standings

Team ECAC Overall This Week
1.  #9 Loyola 1-0 4-0 W 15-8 at Michigan
     #20 Ohio 1-0 3-2 3/9 vs Robert Morris
3  #17 Fairfield 0-0 5-0 W 9-6 at Quinnipiac
Air Force 0-0 2-2 3/10 Army (in Houston)
    Hobart 0-0 1-2 L 8-18 at Colgate
6  #13 Denver 0-1 3-1 3/10 at #10 Penn State
    Bellarmine 0-1 2-2 W 12-10 at Dartmouth
MICHIGAN 0-3^ 1-6 L 8-15 vs #9 Loyola

^Michigan's W/L record in the ECAC column is not officially ECAC League games, but games against ECAC conference members. Michigan is an affiliate member in 2012 and will become a full member and eligible for the championship in 2013. Therefore, wins or losses for Michigan and wins and losses to Michigan by other schools will not count in their respective ECAC records.

history in the making

Well, I'm not a lacrosse expert, but that score doesn't sound promising. However, when we first played soccer, we had our losses, but got a program together quickly. I'm sure that after taking a few lumps on the way, lacrosse will find its way. Their helmets have wings, don't they? Go get em!

This could get ugly.  I have a co-worker who played lacrosse at Loyola (Mark Frye, he actually went pro for a bit) and I'd like for this to at least stay close.  He's of the opinion that Michigan lacrosse will never be Loyola lacrosse.

I laugh at the snooty east

I laugh at the snooty east coasters who look down on teams outside of the hotbeds who have lacrosse. "Western schools will never be a power".

That's also what they said about football way back in the day. Then came Fielding Yost and the rest is history.

I laughed all the way to the bank when denver made the NCAA Lacrosse Final 4 last season.

Agreed.  ND's a good example too.

But at the looks of this game, I might need to bide my time until we're as good as them.  They're on a different level right now.

ND lacrosse fans are some the

ND lacrosse fans are some the most arrogant pricks out there. Whether it be them saying "the reason Michigan didn't schedule them is because Dave Brandon doesn't want his ego to be hurt"

"We have an actual lacrosse-only facility while you have a crumbling warzone" (Ootserbaan)

I do try to inject some logic into their brains by telling them Michigan hasn't even completed their first season. Rome wasn't built over night. Stadiums aren't built in less than a year.

I have some inside info, and some of the things I'm hearing about Michigan Lacrosse home is gonna blow ND's out of the water.

I remember that name - he was

I remember that name - he was a big star back in the day.  But - he's wrong.  Loyola is exactly the type of marginal power that will be hurt by Michigan's entry to the big time.  While its not a bad school, it is certainly not on the academic level of Michigan and it borders a really rough area of Baltimore.  It won't be long before Michigan is poaching recruits and beating teams like Loyola, Denver, Penn State, Ohio State, Hofstra and even some of the weaker Ivies.  It will never be Loyola lacrosse - it will be better!  (Today aside of course).

I agree he's wrong.  With our national reputation, both academically and athletically, we'll be able to snag top talent from everywhere, and every year more of the top talent is coming from not-Baltimore.

This game would put the

This game would put the greyhounds a game ahead of ohio in the ECAC standings if they were to win, but Michigan does not count as a conference win or loss for any teams until the 2013 season.

Same goes for Michigan, they are ineligible for the ECAC Championship and ECAC Tournament Championship until 2013. Michigan is eligible for a NCAA Tournament berth, but they would have to win out and then some to get one.

Expectations

Looking at the 1-5 record, Is this what was kind of expected from the 1st Year Varsity squad??  I know we kind of dominated the club level, so was a more .500 type season expected?

No way.  I think this is what

No way.  I think this is what people expected.  Nothing I read predicted more than 2 wins.

Thanks

Appreciate the answer, like I said, I'm not really a follower of lacrosse in general, so am  not sure what to expect this season

No this was expected.  The

No this was expected.  The Baltimore Sun's preseason LAX guide put the over-under on Michigan's wins as 2.

The Towson's/Loyola's/etc are going to be hammered as the B1G teams are creeping into LAX.  Paraphrasing my wife when we moved to the area;" What the hell is a Towson?"

.500 was not really

.500 was not really reasonable because their schedule is pretty tough and they're still basically playing with a club team.  But, they had a good opportunity for a win last Friday at Jacksonville but lost in overtime.  And they were without their  starting goalie for the first 4 games which made a big difference.

Loyola is #9 in the country, too, so this one is going as planned.  But, I hope and I don't think its out of the question, that they can pull off an upset somewhere along the way.

So, to answer your question - 1-5 is about right but a little worse than expected.

Very proud of the team this

Very proud of the team this season. From what I've seen from following the games, we haven't mailed it in even when the game is pretty much out of reach. We keep competing til the end. Go Blue!! Team 1 are Michigan Men!!

Pretty good

This game went as planned.  Loyola is a very good team, to lose by 7 is a great showing by us.  Team One continues to show improvement each game.

If you throw out the Mercer

If you throw out the Mercer game (they are not good), their faceoff stats weren't a whole lot different so far this year.  Compared to some of their games, especially against those teams' top faceoff guys, this was an improvement.  This was probably an attempt to get some ground ball faceoff wins and also to make sure they had their defensive personnel on the field once Loyola got it.  Faceoffs is not a part of the game they are going to be good at this season.

It would be really nice to have Brekan Kohlitz or David Reinhard back on the roster right now.  Help comes next year with Brad Lott.  ESPN has him as the #1 faceoff recruit in the country.  That's another way this team will make a big jump as D1 recruits start filling out the roster.
