Yeah, it was with Gilbert that we started to see Mack Brown's situation degrade, not with Perrilloux.  Even though Brown passed on a number of quality college QBs in the classes after, he still wound up with Colt McCoy and Jevan Snead instead of Ryan P, and McCoy was an excellent college QB.

I think many folks forget that UT was in the championship game against Bama in 2010 and would have had a fighting chance had McCoy not injured his shoulder early in the game.  They had to play Gilbert and he just wasn't ready for that kind of pressure and it rattled him from that point on.  Gilbert was a hell of a talent with a massive arm, but never recovered from the mental impact of that one game.

Ugh, I still think that Texas would have won that Championship game if McCoy hadn't gotten injured (on the opening drive, I believe). Gilbert was a true freshman with basically no playing experience, thrust unexpectedly into the title game against a Saban-coached Bama defense. And it was still a relatively close game. If McCoy hadn't suffered a freak shoulder injury, I think Texas wins that game.

They actually are mostly positive about the whole thing insofar as Strong started out way behind and was able to make it close with Murray (kind of like UM with Rosen I suppose).

Also, there is some seriously high-quality back and forth between A&M trolls and UT fans, very funny.

....but also consistent with the best guess put forth on Burnt Orange Nation - LINK :

Florida State quarterback commit Kai Locksley would probably be more likely to commit now given the even more open depth chart without the possibility of earning early playing time next fall.

There are also updates on the rest of their class for this cycle, if you really are into Texas recruiting.

As a Texas alum, as well as a Michigan alum, I was really, really hoping for this whole thing to sort out with Michigan landing Gentry and Texas getting Murray. C'est la vie.

Maybe UT can sway one of the two other committed QBs they've been pursuing (Locksley at FSU and another one that I can't think of off the top of my head). Otherwise, Strong is going to be in a really tough spot. Pretty much no one believes in Swoopes after his bowl game performance and there are no other viable QBs on the roster and one middling 3* in the incoming class.

I think most people believe (or are at least hoping) that Strong can be their Harbaugh. I mean, most people around here were lamenting the fact that Hoke hadn't gotten the axe a year earlier, keeping Michigan out of the running for Strong's services when he was looking to jump from Louisville.

Their offense was horrendous last year (59yds of offense).  Their defense was solid but lose their best players to early NFL entry and graduation.  They don't have any good QBs in the pipeline.  Strong is a good defensive coach, but I don't think he'll last 4 years.

Murray is very short, but he is one of the most polished HS QBs you'll ever see.  So much so, that he may pass up A&M's current starter (who was the #1 PP QB the previous year).  Personally, I hope Murray gets redshirted.

I take great joy in all things negative happening to Texas (within reason of course). I have a friend that is a huge Texas fan and likes to troll all his Michigan friends with any slightly bad Michigan news. +1 to Murray.

I just don't understand some of these Texas athletes not choosing Texas. Fantastic football tradition, academics, and city. Why would anybody choose Texas A & M over that?

Texas and Texas A&M are not that far apart academically and athletically.  A&M has a much stronger alumni network.  Austin might be a liitle too "weird" for people from more conservative backgrounds.  A&M is more quintessential Texas.  Someone from metro Dallas or Houston would feel more at home in Austin.  People from the rest of the state would probably feel more at home in College Station.  It's a matter of personal perferences.

Re: Texas athletes not choosing UT over A&M (or Baylor, TCU, or LSU for that matter) -- this is where A&M's move to the ESS-EEE-CEEEE is proving shrewd. It's allowed them to put a little distance b/w themselves and UT (it was a very similar Little Brother-Big Brother dynamic as UM-MSU), and they get to pitch playing in arguably the toughest conference to Texas kids.

Austin's a great town, certainly more fun than College Station. I'm a Michigan alum but my father and grandfather both went to A&M and I have other relatives who work there today, so I know A&M can seem a little strange to some people -- it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea. But the people who go there LOVE it; I'd put Aggie alums up against alums from any other school for the level of sheer devotion, loyalty, and love they have for their school and its traditions and the experience they have there. In Kyler Murray's case, his dad's an alum and was a star QB there in the '80s, so he's seen some of that firsthand. Not surprised he would choose A&M -- plus, Sumlin's offense is the perfect fit for him.

for losing out on a top recruit. It is a tough situation for them, but we've had our own share of disappointment around here.

I wouldn't launch into schadenfreude just yet. I'm sure Charlie Strong is putting on the full-court press to bring Gentry back into the fold. Nothing is guaranteed until signing day.
