Before even coming to Michigan, Kalis, a redshirt freshman, studied two season’s worth of discs that highlighted Hutchinson when he played guard at Michigan.

On Tuesday, Kalis got some one-on-one coaching from his lineman hero.

“We were doing pass-pro stuff today and Steve actually came up to me and pulled me aside, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is Steve Hutchinson, and he’s talking to me,’ ” Kalis said Tuesday night after practice. “Getting coached up from a guy like that — getting coached up by Coach (Darrell) Funk is great, he’s a great coach, but I get coached by him every day —so getting coaching from Steve Hutchinson one day, it was a great experience to hear from a guy who might be the greatest guard of all time.”

Hutchinson was among the many former Wolverines who were in town for last Saturday night’s game against Notre Dame. Kalis said Hutchinson gave the linemen “pep talks” throughout the game on the sideline.

His on Tuesday was mostly regarding technique. Hutchinson didn’t tell Kalis anything he hadn’t heard and learned from Funk, but sometimes it sinks in coming from a different source.

I swear if you watch any random M video on youtube, you'll see Everitt walk by the camera in some manner. I get these emails suggesting videos I might be interested in; just rec'd one today. About two minutes in, as the band was playing, Lo and Fucking Behold who should appear walking past the goal posts, outside the field of Play.  UGOTIT. It was none other than the guy that was born to be either the center for Michigan or the bass player for ZZ Top. i'm happy with his choice.

That's pretty awesome really that Hutch was out there talking to the offensive line. As someone said, Kalis is already pretty good, but if you're going to spend hours studying the technique of an offensive linemen as well as look up to one, Hutchinson would be an excellent selection.

Great story and thanks for sharing it.

Can't say enough about how great it is that Michigan's past greats are getting involved in the program. I used to look longingly at the Miami and USC sidelines in their heydeys, loaded with alums.
Now it's us--and we might be headed toward a high level of success ourselves.
Another great move by Hoke.

11.7.1.1.1 Countable Coach. An athletics department staff member must count against coaching limits as soon as the individual participates (in any manner) in the coaching of the intercollegiate team in practice, games or organized activities directly related to that sport, including any organized staff activity directly related to the sport.

11.7.1.1.1.4 Use of Outside Consultants. An institution may use or arrange for a temporary consultant to provide in-service training for the coaching staff, but no interaction with student-athletes is permitted unless the individual is counted against the applicable coaching limits. An outside consultant may not be involved in any on- or off-field or on- or off-court coaching activities

The NCAA makes no distinction between paid vs. unpaid. Volunteers who give instruction are considered coaches. Yes, in the grand scheme of things it's not big deal. If it is a secondary violation I imagine compliance has already reported it to the NCAA and nothing will come of it, but you still don't want to make it a habit.

In a conversation by someone who is permitted to be there hardly rises to the level of "coaching." If they asked him to come to practice and run drills or go over technique for an hour that would be one thing. Meeting someone and giving a few tips doesn't really qualify.

We have such a great history of players, it really must be awesome for these kids to be around them and learn from them.  It is a lot different then hearing from your coach everyday.

I saw Chris Humphries at the game.  No idea why he would be there.  He had a long wig under his hat.
