He's been paying close attention to the USMNT, he's not just starting from scratch.  This deal has been in the works for some time.

No Dempsey?

EDIT: apparently he's preparing for the upcoming season with Fulham.  Bad timing I guess.  Altidore also appears to be working with a club team right now as well.

Klinsmann’s first roster: Goalkeepers: Tim Howard (Everton), Bill Hamid (D.C. United). Defenders: Carlos Bocanegra (Saint-Etienne), Edgar Castillo (Club America), Timmy Chandler (Nürnberg), Steve Cherundolo (Hanover), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Michael Orozco Fiscal (San Luis), Heath Pearce (Chivas USA), Tim Ream (New York Red Bulls). Midfielders: Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Michael Bradley (Moenchengladbach), Ricardo Clark (Eintracht Frankfurt), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Jermaine Jones (Schalke), Brek Shea (FC Dallas), José Torres (Pachuca). Forwards: Freddy Adu (Benfica), Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls), DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Edson Buddle (Ingolstadt), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy). Mexico is expected to unveil its player selections today. Link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/soccer-insider/post/juergen-klinsma…

Thanks for posting this. To go off of what you said previously, since Dempsey and Altidore are pre-occupied with their respective club teams, does that mean they won't be eligible to play against Mexico?

Also, for those of us who don't follow the rosters super closely (and don't know much more than the popular names), can you comment on any of the differences between this roster and previous rosters Bradley put together?

Thanks!

I'm surprised by the inclusion of Beasley, dude hasn't been anywher near the National Team in a few years. Most excited for Timmy Chandler, I'm hoping he can prove to be the right back of the future, and Lichaj can take over the left back spot. That leaves the problem of the middle of the defense for 2014. Tim Ream has a bright future, but that's what it is at this point, the future. Hopefully we can find someone in the next 3 years, and we won't have to rely on Boca in Brazil. Love the guy, but mid-30s is too old to be a key component of a World Cup team.

Above all else, beat Mexico!

Really? Other then that I like the midfield selection, is it telling that Donovan is listed with the forwards? Or is that just because Jozy isn't available? I have heard a lot about a potential 4-3-3 but I don't really know what the plan is, thoughts?

Has there ben any thoughts from Brian on Bradley / Klinsmann?  I attempted to look, but found nothing.  Hoping for a good read to fill up one of the last days before practice starts.

As for the roster, there have been comments that Altidore and Dempsey are with their clubs, is that where Lichaj is also?

Other than Clark, I am good with this.  Kind of hard to judge until We see what the plan of attack is.  Should be a very interesting game.

Lichaj got a small injury so that is why he is not on the roster.  He might have been able to play, but he wanted to rest so that he can concentrate on the premier league season coming up.  It wouldn't be worth it to further injure himself in a friendly against the sometimes dirty tackles of the Mexican national team.

Since Klinsmann's coaching mentality is very attacking based, I thought he might go w/ 4-3-3.

GK: Howard

D: Bocanegra, Cherundolo, Goodson, Pearce

M: Bradley, Clark, Edu

F: Adu, Beasley, Donovan

Of which I have many to be summarized in bullet form...

- Nice to see Bil Hamid get a call, even though he won't play. Dude is the Keeper of the future.

- Timm-ay Chandler needs to play every single freakin' match for the U-S from now until 2020. I'm not saying he's Philip Lahm or anything, but he's by far the best option at RB.

- Good to see Castillo and Ream get a call-up, but where's Omar Gonzalez? Young, prototypical size for a CB, and yet he's not on the roster.

- I thought Ricardo Clark was out of my life forever, and then BAM! Hasn't he proven at this point, he's not an international level player? I feel like Walter in The Big Lebowski. Doesn't anyone around here give a shit about the rules [the rules being Ricardo Clark's ineptitude).

- Donovan and Beasley listed as Forwards is interesting. Donovan because Bradley always played him out wide and as mentioned above this could be the signal that Jurgen is going to try out a 4-3-3. Beasley because he's old and he hasn't come close to the USMNT in a while.

Regardless, pretty good selections (minus Clark and the lack of Omar Gonzalez), and it'll be interesting to see how they play under Jurgen.

I'm excited to see Hamid on the roster as well.  We always produce great GK, hopefully that starts happening all over the field.

I wanted to see Omar Gonzalez as well since he plays for the Galaxy, but Michael Orozco getting called up is just as good.
