Kirk Herbstreit comment on GameDay

Submitted by FireJimDelaneyNow on

I heard Kirk Herbstreit, refer to the University of Michigan as the "wolves" on GameDay last weekend.  For the life of me I have never referred or heard anyone refer to the wolverines as the "wolves."  I know this guy is a egomaniac, but has anyone ever heard the wolverines referred to as "wolves"?

Every damn time I tell someone I graduated from Michigan they ask me if I mean Michigan state. (no I don't fucking mean Michigan state you god damned plebian!) In comparison someone calling us the wolves dies not register on my annoyance scale.

I live in Oregon and people get confused here as well. I'll say I went to the University of Michigan, and they'll say, oh the Spartans right? I blame it on the final four runs by MSU. That's one of the few sporting events that most casual sports fans watch. It still baffles my mind though.

He meant Wolvs', as in short for wolverines.  Not actual Wolves.

While I agree that it was sort of odd I highly doubt Herbstreit meant any disrespect.  If anything, OSU has accused Herbie on many occasions that he didn't seem to be enough of a homer in their eyes.

Try reading comprehension.  the OP said "wolves" which is much different than "wolvs'".  I was just clarifying there is a huge grammatical difference.  Nice to know you've made it easy to identify yourself as one of the forum douches though.

Both will occasionally reveal some homer-ism, but not nearly to the extent that I've seen from people like Joey Galloway, or Robert Smith. I wouldn't consider either Kirk or Chris to be OSU slappies.

Agreed. Chis more than Kirk, but even then, Chris rarely shows homerism. Chris and Kirk are two of my favorite ESPN people. I believe Chris is an excellent color commentator, which is why I'm happy he is calling our game. I prefer to have Fowler and Herbstreit, but that's OK.

I have a soft for Spielman from this Lions days and a guy you actually saw losing destroyed him internally as opposed to a lot of pros who "hey its a paycheck, next."

As for Galloway I have no idea why he is in broadcasting.  He is turrible.  Another reason to be so thankful for Harbaugh - our team is not so shitty that we get assigned his broadcast team to do our games.

Reminds me of a scene in Sicario. Benicio Del Toro says to Emily Blunt, "You're not a wolf. This is a land of wolves." If we did use wolves more it would be a great clip for games.

How is this thread-worthy? Also, if Kirk called them the wolves, who cares? I don't think Kirk is an egomaniac. He is one of the best analysts on ESPN.

I can see someone getting a little worked up over this after it happened, but its been almost 4 days. Four days later and you are still worked up enough over this to start a thread about it?

I gotta say Kirk Herbstreit is one of my favorite analysts, even considering his alumnus standing. He presents his opinions and information professionally and rather unbiased. I always look forward to his views on college football.

Was getting tired of all the hype leading up to MSU game and Walker recruitment.  We've gone from 7 to 9 win predictions to National Championship contender in one week.  Although, I did put my prediction at 14-1 season on the board, just don't want to jinx us, so I'm following my exact routine each week since Utah game on Saturdays.  Michigan's downfall has always been looking past the next game.  I think Harbaugh will not let that happen and hopefully players are not reading the media hype.  Can this team continue to improve each week like they have? As MSU and OSU surely must be able to from how they have played so far.

I've actually hear it now and again and always just brushed it off as someone's idea of spoken shorthand. I figure that as long as I know what they mean, I am not going to get too worked up about it. That being said, however, the whole "Big Blue" thing does annoy me some - I hear that one more often than I would care.

I live in Orlando, and I wear my Michigan apparel frequently.

I can't tell you how many times I hear "Go Big Blue!" shouted at me as I go by.

I'm always at a loss as to what to say, so I just say "you got it", then mumble "I don't know what it is, but I hope its not catching".

On Mike and Mike this morning, Herbstreit said our defense was good but no players "jumped off the screen" and we were good because we were playing assignments well.

He must have been getting a sandwich on plays when Lewis and Peppers were in the game?

I saw Herbie in the Vegas aiport when I look up at a newstand and he was next to me.

I introduced myself and I told him I was a fan.

He could not have been a more down to earth and nicer guy.  He spent 15 minutes with me and appeared to be geninuely concerned about what was going on a Michigan.  At the time, Hoke was the coach.

He said, "It's important to the BIG and to all of college football that Michigan get back to their normal place, winning a bunch of games and to do it soon.  Us BIG guys have to stick together."

He made it clear how much he respected Michigan, loved the campus and wanted us to be good.

I a big fan.
