Kiffin Full Steam Ahead

Submitted by CRex on
Lane Kiffin today announced his complete and utter disdain for NCAA rules by offering 50 scholarships to players since arriving at USC. "Sure, I know how bad it looks to have to revoke offers," Kiffin told reporters today "so I won't be doing that. Enrollment caps are for suckers and people who still fear the NCAA. I fully plan on enrolling the largest class in college football. They didn't touch us when Reggie Bush got paid, they didn't touch us when we started providing luxury cars to everyone and they didn't touch us when the police found six dead hookers in Sanchez's trunk, you think they'll mess with us over this?" In other news, local Land Rover dealerships have begun to expand their Fall orders, citing an expected upswing by the USC Sports Marketing Department.

The reason Kiffin is so polarizing isn't because he is a jerk - sports have always had a healthy dose of egomaniacal, pompous asses - but because he hasn't done anything that remotely justifies his arrogance. He keeps failing into better situations than the one before (OC at USC [admittedly good, but also recruiting issues] -> HC at Oakland -> HC at Tennessee -> HC at USC).

If you punch Kiffin in the throat he can't say anything, and if he can't say anything he can't tell recruits they'll be pumping gas for the rest of their life or accidentally shut off his pipeline to football factories in Florida. In other words, no more Kiffin humor. We wouldn't want that, would we?

i don't know which is worse- that kiffin is offering this many scholarships or that, from the comments section, it appears the alums fully support, if not flat out encourage, this behavior. I've always thought people saying LA is just a complete moral vacuum was jealousy and hyperbole, but I'm starting to believe it.

like i said i always thought it was jealousy or hyperbole;). can't believe there was not a single comment of indignation in the comments section. While i am sure some michigan fans would root for rr to do something like that i have no fear that there would be plenty of harsh , vocal criticism in the comments as well. so i guess i'll just incriminate the larger portion of usc fans.

He's like watching a car full of clowns crash in slow motion. I get a small thrill out of every new post with Kiffin in the headline, because I just never know what he'll do next. His hiring was baffling and annoying at first, but it's since evolved into high comedy after the move to USC. I don't see his tenure at high profile schools lasting much longer, so enjoy it while you can.

I see his bewildering rise to the top of his profession (for no apparent reason) to be the harbinger of an equally amazing rapid fall from grace to disgrace (sure to drag down whichever unlucky institution employs him at the time). This will be a colossal, all-time flameout, which we'll talk about for 20 years. "Kiffin" will be added to the language for such a career trajectory; as in: "I was doing really well in that new job; but then I had waaaaaay too much to drink one Friday after work, slept with that temp, the pics got posted, and ... Boom! Kiffened!"

Lane Kiffin with that "young lad" face reminds me of the kid down the street that you catch craving his name in the fender of your new car. Lane's the kid you then take to his house ,ring the bell, his dad answers, you tell dad that lane has been busy, although lane was caught redhanded dad alibis for lane. Rules don't apply to Lame.

I'm not sure if this is really unethical or unusual. Presumably, he's told the kids that the first (number) to commit get their scholarships.
