Kickoff Return Video

Submitted by joeyb on

After the team took the field for the kickoff, I just had this feeling that something big was about to happen. So, I got my phone out of my pocket and started recording. I haven't watched any highlights yet, so I don't know how obvious it was that he was taking it back on TV, but I think this shows a designed play and it becomes obvious very quickly that he's taking it back.

These plays are so cool schematically. Really underrated part of football tactics. I also noticed that we have a bunch of starters on the field for these returns. Not just starters, but stars - iirc we had Peppers, Chesson, Lewis, Clark, Butt, hell even Mason Cole was out there. Just goes to show this staff's commitment to having a truly impactful special teams unit.

ignored blocking the two guys on the outside on Northwestern's side of the field.

1)  expecting Chesson to be able to outrun them, which he did

2)  that left 10 guys to block 8 plus the kicker who again Michigan would count on Chesson being able to outrun

3)  NW stays disciplined in their lanes which allows Michigan to set two walls with double teams, the last by Peppers.  The two outside NW guys on Michigan's sideline go too far upfield are are easy to blockoff which creates the wide lane for Chesson to run through.

It was brilliant, one of the best KO returns execution wise I've ever seen, no one really came close to touching Chesson and he hardly had to make any cuts to "juke" someone.  It was just great blocking and pure speed.

Its obvious Michigan saw something in their kick coverage and exploited it to the maximum.

Fitzgerald said in his press conference that they overpursued the kick coverage to the Northwestern sideline.  Nonetheless, perfect execution from the return team.  Butt, Cole, and Peppers all clearly knew and executed their assignments.

I'm still confused about what occured on the Jouran Lewis INT. It looked to everyone (including Pat Fitzgerald who was 3 feet away) as though the Northwestern WR had caught the ball, then we see Lewis streaking down the sideline for 6. Did the ball bounce off the WR's chest? Or did he have it but Lewis wrestled it away? I wish there was a better camera angle on it. It looks like OP would have had a good view of that play. Any insight?

I was there and can confirm the feeling that something was going to happen. I almost recorded it myself, but was low on battery so decided not to. I was kicking myself afterward.

One thing that's strange about videos from the stands is how they dont capture all the noise - I took a video later and it only seemed to capture the noise immediately around me, and didnt give a good impression of how loud things were. Same with this video.

Watching at home, it was quickly apparent that the return could be taken back for big yardage. I even said to my dad, "oh this looks good" as the giant lane opened up. Once he hit the sideline it was a wrap. Big fun. I slapped my dad hand so hard I was worried I damaged it lol.

went wild on that play, jumping up and down.  Just an incredible way to start the game.

Seeing Chesson in the last couple games, I can't help but think Michigan has been wasting his talent the previous 3 years.  The guy can flat out fly.  And these coaches, being the extremely smart people they are, have figured out other ways to get him the ball.

Some people like sitting at the 50-Yard line (it obviously has some benefits).  But watching a game from the endzone is terrific fun from the standpoint of x's and o's.  You can really see plays developing, holes opening, walls being built.  Terrific vid!
