Kickoff to "Hate Week", Day One.
Since those bastards in EL have had and extra week to stock up on couches and gas mask, let’s reflect on why we hate on Hate Week.
#1 Spartan Bob
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_Michigan_vs._Michigan_State_football_game
The 2001 Michigan State vs. Michigan football game, also known as "The Catch", "Clockgate", or the "Clock Game", was played on November 3, 2001 at Spartan Stadium.[1]
While the game was closely-played throughout, it is the game's conclusion that is most remembered. On fourth-and-goal, with one second remaining in the fourth quarter, Michigan State quarterback Jeff Smoker threw a touchdown pass to running back T. J. Duckett as time expired to win 26-24.[2] The clock had run out of time before the last play of the game took place, but with one second showing on the clock, the Spartans were allowed to have one last play.[3] Regardless, following the game the Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr chose to file a petition to change the way the game time was kept and the NCAA now keeps official time on the field.[4]
#2 1974 Rose Bowl.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973_Ohio_State_vs._Michigan_football_game
On the day after the game, following a conference call, it was announced that Ohio
Statewould play in the Rose Bowl instead of Michigan. Schembechler was furious at the call, referring to it as "an embarrassment to the Big Ten Conference" and claiming "petty jealousies" were involved.[2] Schembechler went on to demand changes to the Big Ten's policies regarding post-season play. Schembechler was particularly bitter because his 1973 team did not lose a game and was not rewarded with a bowl assignment, and remained angry at the vote until his death in 2006. Schembechler also claimed the Franklin injury was just an excuse, since OhioState's strength was a running game and not a passing attack.[3]It was rumored that Michigan State University voted for Ohio
Statein retaliation for Michigan's "no" vote in 1949 against admitting Michigan State to the Big Ten. This charge was never substantiated. For months afterward, OhioStatenewspapers would be flooded with letters from angry Wolverine fans, and threats of lawsuits.
Deep thought of the day by Silkey Johnston, " I hate you. I hate you. I don't even know you, and I hate your guts. I hope all the bad things in life happen to you and nobody else but you."

I dunno if I'd call this Hate Week. I hate OSU, but MSU is mostly just annoying.
October 9th, 2011 at 5:14 PM ^
Yes. This week is "Damn, I really want to swat that motherfucking fly buzzing in my face week"
October 9th, 2011 at 5:37 PM ^
That motherfucking fly has been buzzing in my face the past 3 years. Time for the shenanigans to stop.

Part of the reason they cleaned our clocks the last 3 years is because this is their super bowl yet we still want to pretend that it's "Just another game". Hoke has made it clear that this is no longer the case, the State game is right where it should be as a close second to the Ohio game. We as a fanbase should follow our coaches lead.
October 9th, 2011 at 8:32 PM ^
The main reason they cleaned our clocks the last three years, is they had a better scheme! We were out coached. I'm pretty sure we took them seriously, we just plan well enough to take advantage of their deficiencies. And they very much so took advantage of our short comings.
October 9th, 2011 at 5:11 PM ^
I think this was a bigger travesty than clock-gate. Plus, it happened right in front of me. I had seats right on the goal line, about 15 rows up.
Growing up in EL, I've got lots of hate for sparty.
October 9th, 2011 at 10:32 PM ^
I was at that game too. Must have been sitting pretty close to you.
And yeah, it was a travesty. Major hate for Sparty for that. Braylon's payback in 04 was only a small fraction of what we still owe them.
Hopefully this year we'll start to reverse the injustices in EL the same way we've finally, finally, FINALLY made the other greenies, in SB, pay over the last three years for their absurd luck/wind-stopping-magic/scheduling shenanigans.
October 10th, 2011 at 9:08 AM ^
I still have nightmares about the Desmond pass interference in the end zone. You may have even had some of my profanity-laced venom land on you from my location a few rows back. Sorry 'bout that.
More context about that game (for those who don't know or forgot): UM was ranked #1...I repeat, we were the #1 team in the nation. Losing 28-27 just killed me. But I still love that Moeller and his testicles gigantes decided to go for two and the win after scoring a late TD to pull within one point. And my hatred for all things Sparty grew so very intense after this game.
More context: UM lost to ND in the season opener in a #1 vs. #2 game. ND then lost to Stanford in week 4, thus allowing us to reclaim the imaginary #1 ranking heading into the MSU game. Those were awesome years when the UM-ND game had so many early-season national ranking ramifications. [Deep sigh.]

No, he's not from EL.

Looks like "troll week"
October 9th, 2011 at 5:14 PM ^
I don't know if their is a team with a greater inferiority complex than Sparty. They command respect for their good season and when they lose out on almost every recruit in the state, they claim to be recruiting nationally. Respectability comes with consistency. A win this week end should shut them up for awhile. God I want to win this game!
October 9th, 2011 at 5:19 PM ^
Sure, they recruit nationally, but Bulgaria is just not the football hotbed that it used to be since the fall of the Iron Curtain.
October 9th, 2011 at 5:28 PM ^
They're recruiting is going international now, we're doomed! Does that mean they're bringing guys back from Bolivian as well?
October 9th, 2011 at 9:29 PM ^
They tried to recruit intergalactically, until they realized that we control space.
Space, bitches. Space.
October 9th, 2011 at 9:46 PM ^
Plus the Space Emperor of Space funnels all the best talent our way. You'll never make inroads to Krypton Mark! Muwhahahaha!
October 9th, 2011 at 10:41 PM ^
I think Dantonio is starting to change the tide on the rivalry. Hell people in Michigan are starting to believe in him. Never in a million years I would have thought that. Selling jerseys in Michigan is a good start.
October 9th, 2011 at 6:19 PM ^
I don't know if their is a team with a greater inferiority complex than Sparty. They command respect for their good season and when they lose out on almost every recruit in the state, they claim to be recruiting nationally.
I'd describe that as more of a superiority complex (an exaggerated outward reponse intended to compensate for internal doubt). Minnesota fans are probably manifesting more of a straighforward inferiority complex right now.
October 9th, 2011 at 6:27 PM ^
The funny thing about Sparty is that their fan breakdown is probably 45% superiority complex, 45% inferiority complex, and 10% rational. Yet the one thing they're all bound in unity over is their intense hatred for big brother. Seriously, at any time over at RCMB there are a few threads that focus on Michigan and a good number of discussions on their own teams eventually drift into debates on how they stack up against Michigan.
They're a scary fanbase and it's easy to see why they riot in their town when something big (good or bad) happens to one of their teams. I'll never attend a game at Spartan Stadium and while I'm perfectly willing to be friendly and hospitable if I meet them in Ann Arbor it's the fanbase in the B1G that I'm most leery of because they're the least predictable.
October 9th, 2011 at 9:03 PM ^
think their fanbase is even in the same league with tsio's as far as scary goes.
October 9th, 2011 at 9:32 PM ^
I'll second that. And not as scary as PSU's fans prior to 2008. I went to State College in 2006, saw the Great Quarterback Massacre, and took as much abuse there as I did at the Horseshoe later that year.
October 10th, 2011 at 10:25 AM ^
I was at a game at the shoe when I was an MMB member (the year they won the national title) and while there was certainly vitriol present I never once felt physically threatened. They're just drunken loud fans. Sparty fans are the type of guy that will pick a fight even if he's outnumbered 5 to 1. And while pathetic, that guy obviously has nothing to lose. And that makes him scarier to me. Different strokes I guess.
October 9th, 2011 at 8:23 PM ^
I don't know if they have a bigger inferiority complex than State, but they're pretty loony too. Many Auburn fans would rather see Bama lose than Auburn win.

October 9th, 2011 at 5:47 PM ^
It was 1990 because we play them at home in even years. It was my junior year and I had OK student tickets that year letting me get on the goal line. Desmond returned a kick 94 yards in that game. It would have been fitting if he had won it with the 2 point conversion at the end. The hangover cost us the Iowa game the next weekend, otherwise you were potentially looking at a national championship team. Colorado won that year with a loss and a tie.
October 9th, 2011 at 6:47 PM ^
1990. I only know that becuase the year after I was born on the day we went up to EL to avenge the loss and we beat the tar out of them

Anyone know what the line is? I can't find one yet. Oh, my sparty hate week hate reason is....nike pro combat mid season, noon game, nobody cares. Get over it, you won the big ten with three teams and you got the worst bowl game when you beat one of the three teams. You don't matter and nobody cares.
October 9th, 2011 at 5:37 PM ^
Sparty is favored by 4.5

Perfect
October 9th, 2011 at 5:39 PM ^
It's really tough to hate our 3rd biggest rival. Dantonio is an asshat.
October 9th, 2011 at 5:45 PM ^
Reason #1 and #1a: Tropp and Conboy.
I always thought of them as a joke until having to watch an assault take place during a Michigan athletic event.
October 9th, 2011 at 6:59 PM ^
the bigger reason to hate them is when Tropp played next year and they played him up to be a f'ng choir boy with a big assist to the former CCHA commisioner.
October 9th, 2011 at 5:46 PM ^
Oohra!
Let's get it on!
Three losses in a row?? We got some 'wrongs' to 'right'!
Go Blue! Beat State!

[Describing the arrival of the MSU team bus carrying Mark Dantonio at Michigan Stadium for the 2010 game.]
A crowd control volunteer greeted all the opposing coaches when they stepped down from the bus, and, he told me, they always appreciated it. Well, almost always.
"Coach Dantonio," he said, extending his hand, "I just want to wish you a speedy recovery [from the then-recent heart attack] and welcome you to Michigan Stadium."
Dantonio brushed his hand away. "Get the hell outta here."
Mark Dantonio hates Michigan, and I see no reason not to reciprocate.
October 9th, 2011 at 5:53 PM ^
The reason why we don't hate them is because Indifference bothers them so much more!!!
October 9th, 2011 at 8:16 PM ^
If they weren't on a winning streak. Hate to say it but when a team is consistantly beating you it's time to stop being indifferent and start taking it seriously.Once we start perennially beating them again, then we can go back to being indifferent. Truth be told, I long for the day when we can look upon Ohio with indifference but that day isn't here yet.
October 9th, 2011 at 9:50 PM ^
So let's just fucking beat them on Saturday, lose the lame countdown clock to the MSU game and go back to regarding Sparty with bemused condescension.
October 9th, 2011 at 8:57 PM ^
Personified. Classless bitch.
October 9th, 2011 at 9:58 PM ^
You can hate Michigan all you want, that doesn't give you license to be a inconsiderate dickhead. It's been four years since Hart dropped the "Little Brother" line and he's still dragging that resentment around. The head coach of a Div 1-A school should really have a thicker skin. A guy with so little social grace, is it any wonder he can't recruit any major talent?
Izzo hates Michigan too, but he still manages to not be an asshole.
