Kevin Borseth leaving Michigan, will return to Green Bay
Michigan release: http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/040412aaa.html
Kind of bizarre, as the women's team finally made the tourney.
Yeah I don't get it. Maybe just wasn't happy in Ann Arbor and wanted to go back to Green Bay?
This might have been a mutual parting of the ways. He was apparently on the final year of his contract, and I think it's possible that Brandon had no intention of bringing him back--regardless of whether the team made the tournament or not. Or maybe their negotiations on an extension hit a snag, and Borseth jumped at the Green Bay opening once it appeared.
they eeeeeked into the tournament in his final contract year but his results were mixed..They had some BIG wins against nationally ranked opponents but could never sustain it and had late season collapses almost every season. Im guessing it was mutual
Kind of a weird situation. How often does a coach leave for green pastures and then return again later? Especially after not being fired from said greener pastures
This breaks my heart.
...has made my mood very dour.
I really liked Borseth. Thanks, sir, for bringing our women's hoops program back to B1G relevancy.
Wonder if Cheryl Burnett is still available?
Borseth had gotten to know my aunt and uncle pretty well, and they had nothing but great things to say about the guy. Wish him luck in the future, he seemed to be on the right track at Michigan.
Thanks for the memories
Still the best entrance I've ever seen to a press conference. It makes me laugh every time.
I LOVE this video! It still cracks me up every time I watch it. I love how he starts off with the slamming of the paper on the podium from out of the frame....then later at the 0.37 mark- "What else do you wanna know?!" Pure awesomeness. Totally.
He seemed like a quality guy, was hyper-energetic, and had a good head for basketball.
The only knock might be an inability to land top recruits. This puzzles me in general with respect to B1G women's basketball. Why are there no Big Ten schools among the top 25 recruiting classes? I would think that with the current strength of men's basketball within the conference, there would be a few prominent programs on the ladies' side.
This may set the program back quite a bit. Just finally got to the tournament after 11 years and now this shyster does this. Sad.
"shyster"
Seriously?
if Brandon can do as well replacing him as he did when he picked his football coach, this may turn out to be good for the program.
I don't know if the school values womens' hoops enough to pay that much for a name coach. I could be wrong, but her price tag could be too high.
For the record, Goestenkors was making $1.25 million a year at Texas, while Michigan was paying Borseth $300,000 a year. That's a huge leap.
Michigan tried hiring a nationally known women's basketball coach once before in 2003 with Cheryl Burnett, but she wasn't successful. A coach with some local recruiting connections might have a better chance. Maybe AnnMarie Gilbert at EMU is available?
Well, the problem was her players basically hated her, and she went through about a full roster a year. When you have a freshman captain on your Big 10 basketball team because everyone else quit and she's the point guard, you've got problems.
It'll be nice to get a stable personality on the sidelines now. He's become a sideshow ever since his rant went viral.
I'll always remember him for the most epic press conference entrance of all time. Happy Trails to Kevin.
Seriously, the Player Development Center was supposed to make more people want to be here, but since it finished and the work on Crisler began, people jut keep leaving. Did they dig up some chemical that is chasing people off? wtf?
Seems like both of our basketball programs are going back to square one in their own ways. Tough times for UofM basketball. But the future is stil bright.
Brandon has always targeted coaches with HC experience so I expect him to go a similar route. Although maybe we should go after an assistant from a top program looking to carve their own niche. Should be a decently attractive job with the new facilities.
EPIC press conf entrance. Hope the WBB recruiting class sticks together. I really hope MSU WBB Doesn't decide to steal our recruits. Hope DB can get a top flight coach in here fast. This is a very attractive job - new facilities, upward swinging.
This isn't the end of the world for Michigan Basketball. A point guard from Michigan is having a chance to go to the NBA after a Big Ten Title winning freshman season. It sucks if he leaves but says a ton about our program. Who is to say another player can't come in and have the same success he had? With Borseth leaving, who knows? It's Women's Basketball...who cares..LOL...seriously maybe he was homesick, thought he reached his ceiling wanted more money and wasn't getting it or just flat out wasn't offered an extension. Once again, who cares.
"The plane that may or may not have David Brandon and the crabby ghost of Don Canham aboard has returned to Baton Rouge, landing about fifteen minutes ago.
…but they apparently didn't make it. Meanwhile, the other plane that may or may not have Dave Brandon aboard is in Dallas, where a coaching convention is going on. "
At least it worked out in the end.
