Kelvin Grady

Submitted by MgoBLUEfromDC on

This is my first time creating a forum topic so take it easy on me.  I just wanted to give praise to Kelvin Grady.  The mgoblue.com countdown to kick-off days 7 and 13 with scrimmage highlights show Kelvin emerging as a great slot threat.  Today's highlights are riddled with #19, revealing great hands and elusiveness.  This is a big surprise considering he was pretty much a non-factor last year and we didn't lose too much at the position coming into this year.  I am just wondering if he is getting a lot of time during the scrimmages because the coaches are resting some players, I think not too likely.  But I noticed from the spring game footage a ton of dropped balls from our big name receivers, ahem Odoms.  So is Kelvin getting that much better or are the rest of the slot guys not progressing as much?  Or is Grady the only one catching the ball?  Either way, it is great to see him out there making big plays.

Kelvin Grady played basketball for two years.. of course last year was going to be a transition. But the kid is a baller. Used to work out/play against him in HS, he was a monster at running back. I'm hoping he has a huge year, because he's a great guy and is extremely versatile as well.

My two reasons to temper your excitement re: Grady -

1)  Stonum, Odoms, Roundtree, and Hemingway

2)  Didn't he do this last year (look real good in camp)?  Then he got some significant PT - earned a reputation for dropping passes, and allowed Roundtree to step up?  I hope the best for the kid, but before we anoint him the next great Michigan WR - we just need to look back 12 months.

I say he wins 4 Heismans...THIS YEAR.

Theres a lot of depth at RB and WR, particularly the slot.  As much as position changes concern me, I'd like to see Kevin Grady moved to defense.  He has decent size and athleticism and thats where the team needs him most.

Regardless of how he looks in practice, I'd rather see Roundtree and Odoms playing at slot, with Gallon and Robinson being worked into the rotation as backups.

With TE's supposedly targeted to cover 70% of snaps, there just isn't enough work to keep all the skill position targets well-utilized.

WR depth does inhibit Grady from getting a ton of playing time, but I'm not sure the best person to switch positions is a guy who was out of football playing basketball for two years, and who just got reacqauinted with football at WR.  Grady wouldn't ever be able to settle anywhere-  it would be setting him up for failure.  Taking another player- Jerald Robinson maybe- who has been in football consistantly and even played DB last year, albeit in high school, makes more sense.  He or someone like him has more potential to succeed  quickly on the other side of the ball than Grady does.

Not hard to understand - we have four proven receivers that are ahead of him (right now).  Sure, only two of those play slot - but still - he's our third string slot receiver.

I'm more than happy that he is looking good in camp - but he's our third string slot receiver who did this last year before phasing out.  That is all.

He did. He had a play of the day catch and looked great all through camp. Once we got to the games he started to drop the ball. I'd like to see him, if the other rb have issues catching the ball, play some rb. I think it was posted on here the our rb's can't catch. I think he'd be a great change up from some of the bigger backs.

looks fantastic. This offense seems to be clicking and, dare I say it, looking more and more like a WVU offense. The year will be fantastic.

Kelvin was a hell of a high school football player.   He wanted to be a college basketball player and made a good little effort at it.    Kid wants to compete, and when hoops didn't ultimately work out, he was probably set back a bit by the timing and physicality of football.   But I'm not surprised one bit that its starting to work out well for him.  I hope he has a great year.

Although I think he looked good and am glad to see him developing, he was running with the 2s and 3s in the Beanie Bowl.  He may well have been featured so much on the video because he made the best catches for Tate and Devin, not because his play was better than the receivers catching balls from Denard.

regardless of who was throwing the ball, or who was in coverage, you have to feel positive about the fact that he seemed to be catching the ball cleanly. His shiftiness and ability to get open are what got him playing time last yr, and I dont expect that to be an issue. If his hands are not holding him back, I think he can be a very viable option, both in the slot and out of the backfield (which the coaches have suggested as a possibility).

the fact that RR played him last season was a magic consider he was a full time BB player until April. There is no surprise that he will step up after another year after switching sports.

Grady was running with the 2's and 3's.  Anyone that did watch him last year knows that he occasionally "heard the footsteps" and dropped quite a few passes with defenders close by.  I love the kids attitude and his incredible burst he has after the catch, but I think our WR depth chart is much too deep for him to consistently run with he 1's, however if he continues working hard and making plays in practice he will definitely see the field often.

I'm confused.  It seems like every other day there's a rumor about him moving to corner, and then a new report comes out saying he's having a breakout camp at slot receiver.  Which is it?

Okay, bad title.  I will be more descriptive from now on.

So there has been talk about not getting excited about him because we have depth at the position.  That only makes it more impressive that he has been so impressive, at least video wise (not at practices so I only know what is out there on the web).  So how do you not get excited about Kelvin?  He was a great HS player in GR, so we know that he has the skills.  Now he is fully committed to football now, a great athlete and versatile so I am expecting more out of him than a 3rd string slot guy.  So again, why should we not be excited about this guy?  RR already came out and said that he was not helping the relief fund of DBs therefore if we see him at other positions this year I am not expecting it to be on defense.  However, I am hopeful to see him out there this fall making big plays.

And I do have to say that we can be very negative on this site.  But isn't it nice to talk about good work ethic coming from a potential 3rd stinger instead of off the field topics for a change?
