I'm not sure why people expect him to commit so soon? I mean he has never been on campus and he just decommitted. I realize recruiting isn't always rational, but I would think fresh after decommitting he would take his time a little bit. This all comes with the same caveat as other posted have said: then again, I don't know shit.
Kalis & Wormley
I"m hoping he's the kind of kid that committed early to OSU b/c he doesn't like the recruiting process and when he found the right place he said yes and got it over with. Then it quickly became the wrong place in late May...
Now that he's not committed, let's hope that UM is the right place and he'll want to be committed again and get it over with.
Otherwise, I see your point. Because if the only reason he committed early to OSU was because he had only ever thought about being a Buckeye, then he (and Dunn for that matter) may wait until February and eat up the experience and 5 free campus visits before deciding. This is what the 'Bamas, USCs, and Floridas are hoping for.
actually, from what I remember reading about Kalis, it is the latter. The guy grew up a Buck fan and always wanted to go there. There was never any question about where he wanted to go until the thought of severw sanctions and a coach search/debacle.
sorry this doesn't revolve around Kalis but word is from the osu training camps is that Dunn is now solid with osu. he was apparently in Columbus on Thursday with his family and visiting with coaches and talking to at least one families recruit in derrick green. I've also seen all of the bill green tweets about Dunn decommitting this week sometime so its hard to know what to think. anyway, that was just the info from bucknuts.
The shift in recruiting to early commitments has turned many fans into spoiled brats who can't wait fifteen minutes between Hello posts. If some of these folks have to wait until Signing Day to find out where their favorite 5-star is going, they're going to need mental health counseling.
& can't listen, so thx for the update.
You may be reading too much into Sam's statements, but at the same time, I think that we are in great shape with both of these guys. Landing a 5* OL (Kalis) and a highish 4* DE (Wormley), along with the possible to likely commits of a highish 4* OL in Diamond and Dunn (4-5* RB) would seriously take this class from very good to elite. What's crazy is that it is likely that we get at least 3 of the 4 names that I mentioned.
Jarred Wilson is meeting with his coaches this afternoon, and might decide as soon as today.
He is also good at the footballs.
Yes please. Just based on need, this may be the most important one.
A true safely - yes, please. Would that pretty much finish out our DB portion of the class?
Other than Jeremy Clark from Kentucky, yes I think this wraps up the DB recruiting. Sam mentioned this morning that the coaches may offer Clark a scholarship early instead of the greyshirt if Wilson decides to go elsewhere. We're battling ND and PSU for Wilson's commit, so there's good competition for his services.
Once the visit takes place we'll be in a great position with him. Visiting campus with these coaches would put most kids on commitment watch. This process has probably been hell for Kalis in Ohio but Hoke uber allies will make him feel very comfortable and reassured. Heck I feel that way every time they give an interview, they're very engaging.
Not sure if it meant anything. He talked about both guys earlier this week, and said he didn't expect a commitment. Don't remember if he said don't expect it SATURDAY with the same emphasis.
Some poster on the Scout Free Boards who claims to be close to Kalis said not to expect his recruitment to last past this weekend. That seems to be the only (not-even-verified) source of expectation. Other than that, it seems to be all conjecture.
DGDestroys, putting aside timing, do you think that we are strongly leading with Kalis and Wormley now, or is that just interweb rumormongering?
Kalis-Strongly leading? Meh. But in a very good position with/maybe slight lean? Yes.
First part is right, second part is not.
Geez, just giving out enough information to wet my appitite, yet not giving anymore...classic TomVH.
Classic Tom, playing the internet version of "just the tip".
Since I find it unlikely that Kalis is not at least a slight UM lean, I'll have to assume it means he is about to drop for the good guys....
Like I said below, the Kalis Update on the board is exactly what's happening right now.
What is it like to be simultaneously so trusted and well respected on this board, and yet so consistantly ignored/second-guessed/doubted?
"I know Tom talked to the guy, and the guy said his favorite food is pizza, but I have to imagine based on random conjecture that he likes burgers more."
You're like the scientist in every disaster movie.
I don't think I "ignored/second-guessed/doubted?" Tom at all, but thanks.
All I did was infer that when Tom said the OP was wrong it meant that Kalis was MORE interested than the OP thought. What did you take form Tom's post that the OP was wrong about Kalis? Care to share your "random conjecture?"
It wasn't intended for you. We all do it from time to time. But it seems to happen every time. Tom says "X." We sayn "Really? No way. Y U No Say Z?"
Not everyone reads every post on here, so it's bound to happen which is fine. I do sometimes wonder if people are actually reading my stuff sometimes if there's a front page post or a diary and someone posts the exact same thing from elsewhere.
It happens on Twitter a lot, too. I'll post something and someone will ask a question that's answered by my tweet. It's like a weird game of Jeopardy. I don't mind though, I like talking to everyone.
I'll take cryptic tweets for $2000 Alex
No one listens when they say don't shut off the containment unit.
In that update, I want to make this part clear, that it's not 100% that Kyle will take the other visits. I'll explain everything that happened once it's over if someone reminds me.
The decision to take visits was decided by he and his coach so he can think about things. Visits can sometimes change that, but we'll see.
And trust me, I'll remind ya!!
I am usually very skeptical, but for some reason I find myself believing a random poster on a Scout free board.
He's had an account for 2 years, has only 11 posts on the Michigan site (31 total of all sites), and the bulk of them are about Kalis.
Either he's got some info, or is a sleeper-troll who has been waiting for the prime moment and was activated when the Kalis decommit happened..
"Either he's got some info, or is a sleeper-troll who has been waiting for the prime moment and was activated when the Kalis decommit happened.. "
I'm just imagining Denzel Washington saying this in the the movie "The Siege".
A Manchurian Candidate Troll? Such a notion is too movie-worthy to be possible!
qouted in today's Cleveland Plain Dealer says he has "put a lid" on Kalis and that "it will be awhile" before he makes a commitment.
Blake Bars will commit before both of them. Raback it. BOOM.
Don't worry guys, I'll be going to Blimpies on Sat and if (when) I run into him, you KNOW I'll be all up in his underpants about committing.
We've been assured that recruits are really swayed by complete strangers doing that.
He's about to get Congressman Weiner'd
With cheddar, grilled onions and pickles with a basket of shrooms plz. As far a Kalis goes he may be feeling pressre only in that if he figures he's going blue anyway, it's to the benefit of his future team to commit early, maintain this bizarre momentum, and help with landing the next guy.
halopenos, bacon, and olives. Some zucchini from the deep fryer with plenty of malt vinegar.
What I laid out in the Kalis Update the other day is exactly what's happening with him.
He has told me everything that's going on, mainly off the record, so that update is what he's thinking. He has very high interest in Michigan.
Tom, since you're up and about, I was wondering what you thought the State of the OLine was outside the Big Fish people are all giddy about? Specifically, with Thurston looking like a Husker, Mullen gone, Olson gone, and Bars about to drop, where do we stand if we don't get Bars?
I guess Bisnowaty is the only name left, does he have any real interest, or are we trailing Penn St. and Pitt?
I think thhe coaches have gone back and forth on whether to take 2 or 3 more linemen. With Diamond and Kalis in the position they're in, the coaches at most have one more spot to fill.
You mentioned Bars and Bisnowaty, Bars as he said in my interview is announcing within a week. If they miss on those two the cochra can sit back and wait for guys like Garnett and Banner to visit and see what happens. If they were to only get Kalis and Diamond I don't think they would mind. You might see a few new names pop up too if they decide that they do want 3 more in this class.
Apparently, Scout is not in the know as they dropped him from High level of interest to Medium. Looking forward to hearing what he can't share with us right now!
Let me preface this by saying, its PATHETIC that 30- and 40-year old grown men with wives, families, jobs and regular lives are F5ing all day to find out the latest whims of 17 year old high school kids on summer break. Who don't even look good in bikinis.
But -- we're all giddy about the OL and DL, and maybe a S or RB, but what about QB. Keil (Kiel?) supposedly was going to announce then pulled back, but what's the rumor on his timing. Is it still near-term?
And, if it was Michigan that "caused" him to reconsider what he was going to say -- what was THAT supposed to mean. Do I take it to mean, he was going to commit to someone else (IU, OU), but Hoke got in his ear and said, wait a bit and check out the OL we're assembling for you? Wouldn't you think there would be some Twitter chatter of Kiel/Keil and Kalis/Diamond etc., you know, are we doin this thing, etc.
The only certainty with Kiel is that he held off on a decision and no one knows who's in play for him. He keeps things quiet so all anyone can do is speculate.
If we were to land a highly-rated QB this class, my guess is it would be Mauk instead of Kiel.
Kiel has been pretty quiet with basically rumors being attached to him. It doesn't sound good for Michigan but you never know. It sounds like right now it's between Missouri and Indiana with Oklahoma still in the mix. Michigan and Alabama are longshots from what I've been hearing.
But like I said, a lot of this is rumor based.
EDIT: Also, forgot to mention that according to a few things I've read recently, he wants to make his decision before July, so we'll know soon.
Read this free Scout article on OSU scout site: http://ohiostate.scout.com/2/1081569.html
“An old coach told me, ‘When you commit somewhere you want to make it solid,’ ” Peterson said. “I always correlate it to getting engaged. When you get engaged, you want to make it solid. If you have a doubt, then guess what? You probably shouldn’t be engaged. We’ll get married in February, but if you have questions then guess what? We don’t want to be engaged. We don’t want to have a commitment.
“We want guys who are solid and confident in what they want to do. Those are the kind of guys we want at Ohio State.”
Kalis to Peterson: "But coach, you cheated on me?"
That's such bullshit. So when Kalis commited to OSU, he was supposed to know that the HC who recruited him would resign and the University would be facing major sanctions? Peterson is a dick.
I think Peterson was misquoted. I think what he actually said was: "An old car dealer told me, 'When you take a car for a test drive, you want to make it solid. You don't just want to drive it around the block a few times and then take it back to the lot. You want to take it home with you for a couple weeks and be sure to drive it across state lines.' What I've always equated it to is getting a tattoo. If you're at the parlor and you're not sure whether you want to flaming Buckeye or the 'I heart Brutus' then you probably don't need to be getting that tattoo, even if they will do you a half-sleeve for free. Those are the kind of guys we want at Ohio State."
I don't know where that reporter came up with the nonsense about engagements and marriage and stuff.
Horrible metaphor. This was more of an engagement, then finding out your future spouse has multiple STD's and a terrorist family.
STD's....which ones? A true buckeye would be expecting at least a little sumpin special from the new bride. Right?
He sounds pretty much like most OSU posters on their message boards after Kalis de-committed.
That this came from a coach that Kalis supposedly had been building a relationship with for litterally years. How can any coach take a shot at a 17 year old kid for pursuing other opportunities because OSU brought huge sanctions and penalties on themselves.
When Dee Hart de-committed, how did Hoke & Co. react? Thought so.
but he cheated with (metaphorical) prostitutes and turned a blind eye as the children from his first marriage hung out with drug dealers. You can get an annulment for discovering that even after you're married, so far better to break the engagement.
And midway through the engagement they replace your super model fiancee with a woman to be named later right before he wedding date, you're supposed to stay committed? Talk about an arranged marriage...
Sounds like the name of a business from a Dickens' novel.
I hear Dunn's name quite and bit and I know Tom keeps mentioning how close to the vest he and his family like to keep things, but I'm not at all ready to put him in the possible-to-likely category. I have no inside information or anything other than my own gut feeling.
I hope I'm wrong.
I actually disagree. I have no info, but here is my reasoning, which assumes rational thought by Dunn:
Dunn committed to OSU, which runs a fairly pro-style attack behind a traditionally big O-line. From his committment, we can assume that (1) he wants to be in the midwest and/or B10, (2) he wants to play in a pro-style set (he is 6'2", 220ish, so makes sense), and (3) he probably wants to go to a big name school. If he is smart, we can also infer that (4) he wants to go to a school that will provide him a dominant O-line to run behind because that is probably the biggest determining factor of a RB's success.
Michigan satisfies all of these criteria - midwestern/B10 school, running a power-style pro-style offense perfect for a big back, big name school, and if we add a few of the OL kids we are expecting to soon drop, by the time that Dunn is a junior, he will be running behind what may be the best O-line in the B10 if not the country. Seems like a perfect fit. And, he has said positive things about Michigan.
Aha, so maybe DB's whole push for a mascot is aimed at luring Dunn.
Joking aside, I get your point that I am just speculating about Dunn - I came right out and said that in my post. But, I still think that my point holds and that if Dunn decomitts, the school that is most like OSU from a football perspective would be us.
Here's my summary of the big recruiting weekend ahead of us.
if we wanted to be on your blog we'd be there. top pushing it here.
According to Allen Trieu Twitter account:
"Michigan got one! Go to GBW!"
So was Trieu's comment about the 2* safety commit?
I did go to GBW (reasonably enough) for a look, and currently the only news they have up is Jeremy Clark, the safety from Kentucky (I feel awkward using the abbreviation "KY"), but maybe that will change later in the day. Otherwise, that is "the one" . . .
I got this from bleacher report so take it which ever way you want but in the article it says that Kalis is certain that Wormley is going to michigan.
For those of you that are strongly agains bleacher report heres the quote
“I’ve pretty much come to the conclusion that Wormley is going to Michigan,” Kalis told Bill Kurelic of Bucknuts.com.
The article is worth reading.
i don't think anyone is questioning that Wormley is likely a Wolverine, it's generally just don't to head scratching over why he hasn't committed and when he'll pull the trigger.
I can totally understand not commiting. If i was getting recruited i would definately wait and take all of my official vistis. They get to go party at college schools while everyone is basically sucking their dicks telling them how good they are the whole time. Who wouldn't want to do that.
After committing to a school.
Well here is a link to a site that isn't blacklisted here.
It also says in the article that they pulled the comments from ESPN (couldn't find their link, probably insider info), so no need to let Bleacher Report take any credit.
That's just TomVH being TomVH. Love it!!
My feeling is Kalis commited to OSU and figured he would recruit and get others there..including his pal Strobel..he now sees that is going to be hard with the OSU situation..and Strobel loves UM and commited..and Strobel talked to Kalis about UM..and the recruiter got recruited ... and that should make us all happy because Kalis looks like one hell of Olineman
Josh at TheWolverine is hinting that Michigan will add a "big one" possibly later today...
He is meeting with his coaches today
I was listening on my way into work and thought the same thing. Sam kept emphasizing Saturday so much it made me think there was more to it. No gut feeling yet, but it was something I felt like calling him out on too. This is soo early though. Makes the offseason fun and keeping up with it all.
Can you see us taking 2 with Stanford and Burbridge(Grades permitting)?
With all the negative publicity in Ohio about Kalis decommitting, I could totally see him choosing any school but Michigan. To the people in Ohio, he at least wouldn't be a judas. They could understand that he chose a different school, just not Michigan.
A lot of Ohio State fans have said some pretty awful things. If it were me, that would nudge me toward a rival, not away.
Boren got pissed at Michigan and it drove his whole family to OSU. The (obvious) point is they didn't abandon the rivalry. They may now be thinking something is amiss with their new adoptive family, Whateva.
his brother Zach was not offered by Rodriguez; Boren's furloughsthat Lloyd allowed so that he could plow driveways were not honored by Rodriguez; Boren did not like getting yelled at by Rodriguez' potty-mouthed staff; Boren always wanted to play for OSU, but his Dad, who had played for Bo steered him to Michigan, once RR decided not to offer the younder Boren, Dad felt that his loyalty to M was not returned, and Justin had his blessing to transfer to OSU.
Ultimately, had Zach Boren been offered by M, I dont think that even the revocation of the furloughs and the thin skin would have caused Justin to transfer because his Dad would have made him stay, but once that happended, the RR "family values" meme became a very convenient pretext for showing RR that the Borens believed that RR broke a pact that Boren had with Loyd.
While it was Rodriguez' choice to "reneg" on an arrangement between Lloyd and Boren the elder, and it was his choice not to offer Zach Boren. I think the latter was unwise given that RR never hit the 85 limit anyway and it would have shown some good will to an alumni and some smarts in that it would have kept his best lineman in the fold.
My impression of the LC era was that the honoring of "tradition" resulted in entitlement and stagnation. This needn't have happened, but there it was. RR addressed (or didn't address) M tradition in a whole different manner and (at least) entitlement and stagnation ceased to be issues.
You make a fine point in terms of the lack of an offer to Middle Boren. My focus regarding the Boren's seems to remain on their general vitriol toward M. In this case I'm glad you can never go home again.
I'm just taking a guess but with the emphasis being on staurday, I would assume they are refering to the fact that he will be commiting to Mich (In thier opinion), just not on saturday. I hope its accurate
