Justin Meram on Ives Galarcep Draft Board
This is for all those following Michigan's recent soccer success. I perused the boards earlier today and I didn't see any mention of this. For those of you who don't know, and I'm not sure a lot of people do, Ives runs a US soccer blog that has a lot of followers.

22. JUSTIN MERAM, Michigan, Forward
A fearless forward who has shown a great ability to go at and beat defenders, Meram's stock has risen faster in the past month than any player in the nation.

Cool story on Meram, how are you able to create a thread with 53 points?
Sincerely,
81 point guy

It has since been relowered back to 20 points, IIRC.
December 8th, 2010 at 3:43 PM ^
If so, it may be raised a little higher after the OMG URBZ stuff gets sorted through.

I just wanted to let you know that I always think of your signature when I see a mspaint and I immediately give the artist +1.

Is it bad if I want Meram to join the football team while he pursues a master's degree?
December 8th, 2010 at 3:43 PM ^
If I remember correctly, he was on the team briefly, but it obviously didn't work out.
December 8th, 2010 at 4:17 PM ^
because the soccer coach wanted him focused on soccer. I believe the football coaches would have loved to have him on the team.

It's not very comforting that Akron has pretty much their whole starting 11 on that list
December 8th, 2010 at 3:46 PM ^
Yeah not with that game against them coming up.
Congrats to Meram though.

Five of the top eight are from Akron. Yikes!
December 8th, 2010 at 5:38 PM ^
How in THE hell is Akron getting 5 of the top 10 and 7 of the top 30 players in ANY sport. Its AKRON, OHIO!!!! Even LeBron wanted out and he grew up there.
One day Akron will be known as the SMU of soccer. Something's fishy there beyond the smell of the coeds in Columbus.

Why the soccer powerhouse in Akron?
December 8th, 2010 at 3:46 PM ^
He can still kick in the bowl game..
December 8th, 2010 at 9:21 PM ^
I didn't see anyone mention him kicking for the bowl game in the other "kicker recruit" post that referenced Justin's video.
He should be eligible, not sure why he wouldn't be.
When does the College Cup end? Will need to check that but should be in the next 10 days or so...
December 9th, 2010 at 9:50 AM ^
It ends Sunday, so if he were to choose to play, he'd have plenty of time to prepare
December 8th, 2010 at 3:47 PM ^
I propose a posbang simply because (a) this is not a quadruple post, and (b) this is not a Urban Meyer or coaching change thread. Anyone with me?
December 8th, 2010 at 8:58 PM ^
I was waiting for this topic to devolve into how Meram either saves RR's job with 50 yd booms, or gets RR even more bad pub by having to rely on a "futbol" player.
December 9th, 2010 at 10:05 PM ^
..of the content. I find it works out really well...one can open the threads they are interested in, or want to comment on, and NOT open the threads they may not be interested in...so if someone inadvertantly posts a duplicate (subject) or about something I'm tired of reading about, I just move on to the next one...really works!

That draft board shows how tough the Akron game is going to be.
December 8th, 2010 at 4:21 PM ^
I just came across this as well.
Little story on the Michigan soccer team.
December 8th, 2010 at 4:28 PM ^
Excellent find. Good article on the program as a whole. +1 to you, sir.
December 8th, 2010 at 4:25 PM ^
Can Meram kick for the Bowl game, since his soccer season will be over?
December 8th, 2010 at 4:46 PM ^
Akron is an absolute soccer powerhouse (how i have no clue) and this chart is just amazing ... can you imagine if a football team had 5 out of the nations top 8 pro prospects ... this team's whole defense got a run with one of the us jr teams ... either way though, one game, its soccer, anything can happen, go blue

It's important to note that soccer is very different from the NFL in that the collegiate game is not essentially a minor league system. Take a look at the USMNT's roster and you'll see that most players either spent a year or two in college or none at all.
Akron doesn't have 8 of the top 10 pro prospects in the nation, even if you take Ive's list as gold (and he's pretty good imo). Top tier prospects like Andy Najar and Spector play for academies either in the US or abroad until they're ready. Akron has 8 of the top 10 collegiate prospects, which is still pretty crazy if you ask me, but the difference is important.
College soccer is looked down on by the MLS and other leagues, and for good reason. The NCAA has more than a few rules that really hurts the quality of the game because they allow teams to de-emphasize skill in favor of running up and down the field. As US Soccer improves, less and less top tier kids are going to go the college route, and this will be great for the USMNT.

He is getting called to u20s national team after the cup. He makes a name for himself their he could play in the u20 world cup then maybe the olympics..
Would be pretty cool to see a wolverine on the national team.
December 8th, 2010 at 7:49 PM ^
While he was the leading freshman goal scorer in the nation I'm pretty he he wasn't #1 overall. Hertzog from Penn State had 20 I believe. Still, he was Gatorade high school player of the year last year and he's obviously lived up to the hype and more.
He scored the lone goal against Akron earlier in the year, hopefully he can get another or two Friday.
December 9th, 2010 at 2:00 PM ^
I believe he could sign with the MLS and still play American football next year at Michigan. Schedules might be an issue, however.
December 10th, 2010 at 2:09 AM ^
LOL no. Believe it or not, the MLS is a serious thing, and they don't let their players walk out on to a football field just for shits and giggles.
December 9th, 2010 at 2:32 PM ^
And today Ives posted another article specifically on Meram. Here you all go.
