Just Shook Denard's Hand

Thread-worthy? I think so. Am I pathetic for being this excited? No chance.

Upon return from a semi-business trip to Florida, I exited my plane at Detroit Airport with my girlfriend, glad to be on land. As I looked ahead, a bundle of light could be seen, the brightness of which can only be compared to the sun, or possibly the headlights on those really expensive BMWs. What could that be, I asked? Of course, it was the smile of the one and only Denard Robinson, enough to brighten even the shittiest of days. Sporting my backward Michigan hat, block M for all to see, I went up to him and gave him a firm handshake and said "Good luck, Denard, You're the man."

I am around pro hockey players almost every day. I've met Crosby, Yzerman, Thornton, etc. But this was my first experience becoming starstruck. On the way home, after listening to me go on and on about Denard, my lady finally say "I get it....he's good, keep it in your pants!"

It was a festivus miracle!

A Festivus Miracle indeed!

I've seen a couple times around campus, and actually got the chance to have a brief convestation with him my freshman year (his freshman year as well).  One of the nicest people you'll ever meet.

It has been a spectacular Festivus.

I'm in favor of a motion to make Festivus the Official-Unofficial-Non-Football-Or-Athletic-Related-Non-Denomational-Aluminum-Sponsored Holiday of MGoBlog.

I assume many of you have met

I assume many of you have met him on campus, but I don't go to UM so I've never seen him, so this was cool for me. And since nothing else of note is going on, I figured I would post it.

I'm a student but I work for

I'm a student but I work for a sports agency and I share a few low-profile clients but my boss has a few huge names. As long as I don't get arrested I'll be a certified NHL agent in 2014.

I'm guessing your eyes twinkled similar to the way Riley's eyes twinkled when Thugnificent moved rolled into their neighborhood:

Dude

Yzerman! Seriously he brought the cup to us. Denard is truly a great young man, but Yzerman is THE man. They aren't even in the same solar system. I love Michigan football 10 times more than the Wings, but Yzerman. I agree with your girl, and you have to get a room.

Its always such a cool experience

to meet the guys you see out on the field/court/rink.

I remember when I was little, we stayed in the same hotel in Detroit that the Calgary Flames - for the CCHA finals, Michigan won - did and I got to meet my second favorite player - After Yzerman - Theo Fleury. Real nice guy, signed a couple of cards and took pictures with the whole family. I was like seven and starstruck out of my mind. The next day was the only time I've ever cheered for a Red Wings loss.

Good to hear first hand fan accounts that confirm what a classy guy Denard is!

Very cool

It's amazing. I'm old enough to be Denard's dad but if I saw him somewhere I'd be way too starstruck to say hello. That's the power of sports in our society - grownups (and I use that term very loosely) blown away by 18-22 year old kids. At least the ones who are dilithium-fast anyway.

Hmmmm...

I suspect that right this moment Denard is texting Kevin Koger, Fitz Toussaint or Dave Molk:

Denard: "you won't believe it...at the airport I met frequent MGoUser Jim Lahey.

Toussaint: "Did you tell him he was the man?"

Koger: Srsly? Jim Lahey? I think he goes to school in Philly like clarkiefromcanada...

Molk: Good thing it wasn't THE KNOWLEDGE...I'd have head butted that guy. Cool story bro...

OT to the OP

But when Az Hakim was with the Lions back in 2003 I banged his girlfriend at a party. I know (CSB) but I enjoyed it!

Not to steal your glory or

Not to steal your glory or anything but I figured I would share my story of meeting Denard as well. I visited Michigan two summers ago and my age old friend Taylor Lewan told me he could give me a tour of the facilities and hang out with him for a while since I was on vacation visitiing some family. When he was taking me around out popped Denard with the biggest smile and laughing. Taylor introduced me and Danard gave me one of those handshake to hug things. This was the cherry on top of the ice cream, that was my day. My cousin who I was visiting...an MSU fan... was about to give Denard a handshake until Taylor blurted out "HEY DONT HE IS A SPARTAN FAN!" to which Denard said, "oh no no no" then we all laughed. That will forever be a memory of mine and Ill never forget how great of a team Michigan is. Talent is one thing but the personalities of these guys are like nothing you would expect. They are all so genuine and friendly. Thank you for sharing your story Lahey, I am glad it was as an exciting experience as mine was.

Very Dumb

Apparently you didn't read Bacon's book because if you had you would have realized how often Denard gets accosted by super fanboys like yourself. I'm sure he was nice about it, but jesus christ, give the kid a break.

I dunno. I see him in the Union a lot and I tend to just let him, and all athlete celebrities, have a bit of a break. It's got to be exhausting, you know?

...Not that I didn't post it on Facebook...

If you read JUB's book

than you would realize that Denard was asked by grown men to autograph memorabilia for their "kids" at 10 pm after leaving training. Not the same as running into him and exchanging a greeting

Every time I hear one of these stories, I am reminded that

I have yet to hear anything negative about Denard or his around-the-town behavior. Genetics notwithstanding, kudos to his family, it didn't happen by accident.

Unless you are his ex girl friend, I don't think you should be either. Ewwwwww

It's stories like these that make me such a total Denard fangirl. Whenever I try to talk about Denard to non-Michigan fans, they just don't comprehend his awesomeness... and I end up sounding like a crazed teenage girl babbling about some actor in Twilight.

My Denard experience

It happened on a dreary winter January day. I was waiting to talk with somebody at the Ross Academic Center, when I noticed a couple of athletes socializing by the front desk. One of the athletes approached me, and introduced himself: "Hi, my name is Denard." He did so without the slightest trace of Ron Burgundy (i.e., "I'm kind of a big deal").

This occurred a day or two after Hoke's hire, so Denard had every reason to look frustrated and confused, but instead appeared very upbeat. His easy-going nature is genuine - at one point I had stupidly questioned whether it was a facade.

He won me over that day. How many campus celebrities have approached you? Most of them would do the opposite: wait for you to take the initiative - and even then there's no guarantee that they acknowledge you.

tl;dr Denard Robinson has tremendous character.

Same thing happened to me and my buddies w/ Jason Avant. He was a class act and took the initiative to introduce himself.

I ran into Denard

on campus a few weeks before the 2010 season started and was in awe.  When I finally could speak I addressed him as "Mr. Laces"

The "Just Shook Denard's

The "Just Shook Denard's Hand" just made me think of this. You kind of have to replace "woman" with "Denard" and "had sex" with "shook hands."

I SHOOK DENARD'S HAAAAND AND IT FELT SO GOOD (felt so good)!

Never got to shake any U-M

Never got to shake any U-M greats' hands, but in 1978, my family and I were sitting at the table next to Bo Schembechler & family at The Real Seafood Co. I was 13 and my Dad wouldn't let me go and interrupt their dinner, dang it. I had the frog legs, by the way, couldn't tell what Bo had that evening.

I once hung out with Tom Brady....

I was at Michigan the same time as Tom. He lived on my friend's hall. Back then he was a frosh, back-up to the back-up to the back-up, so I wasn't quite as star stricken. From what I remember, he was a pretty cool down-to-earth guy. I also had calculus with Dhani Jones, English Comp with Larry Foote, and Griese was in one of my lectures. Dhani was definitely very nice, a very chill, easy-going, and friendly person. He certainly had no overblown ego. None of the players that I met had any overblown egos, at least that wasn't the impression that I got. They were just college kids who happened to play football for the uni. I was a bit star struck, initially, when I saw Carmelo Anthony and Hakim Warrick at Syracuse (went to grad school there). It did wear off after a while though, given that I saw them regularly.
