Just how much of a sure thing is Urban to OSU?

I don't want to be that guy, but just how much of a sure thing is it that Urban will be the next coach of Ohio?  It's feasible that the guy just didn't want to be the center of attention by calling the game and asked for it off accordingly, but it seems like it's a foregone conclusion (based on all the media talk) that he'll be there next fall.  Is this legit or is it another Harbaugh to Michigan situation?

Great win today.  I could get used to this!

I've heard tons of reasons

I've heard tons of reasons why he took the game off, one of which was that he just wanted to spend the Thanksgiving weekend with his family.  Which isn't entirely crazy.  Another reason was that his father passed away.  I have done no further research into either of these rumors and consider them just that - rumors.  No one knows the real reason.

I think Meyer will be announced as the head coach 'officially' at the half in the Ohio/Duke basketball game, but this same type of publicity and certainty was driven by the media when Les Miles was Michigan's emminent head coach after Carr retired as well.

EDIT: If I were Meyer, I would wait until the NCAA makes its ruling on punishment.  Now I'm sure with his connections that he would be able to put out feelers on a potential punishment.  Meyer is a good coach who's "got the itch" to get back into football.  Ohio would be a great place for him.  The rumors below about ND firing Kelly and hiring Meyer are as interesting as they are ridiculous.  That's not to say it's outside of the realm of possibility for ND [see: Weis contract extension] and I would consider Meyer to be just as interested in that offer as an Ohio offer.

If I were Meyer

I would take the job, and immediately announce that you arent going to a bowl game as punishment for the compliance issues. Take an immediate stance that you dont approve of what happened and self impose the one year bowl ban. Take the one year off and assume the ncaa doesnt impose anything major. If you took a one year bowl ban i would think the ncaa would agree that it was sufficient.

Once you have that announced, your recruits would realize that they wont be impacted by the ncaa infractions significantly and OSU could effectively leave this in the past starting this offseason. The waiting is currently hurting them as much or more than the ncaa punishment will. Plus, what is the point of going to such a poor bowl game.

except..

those bowl practices are critical. its like 18 free practices that non-bowl teams dont get.

Never forfeit those without reason, and I dont think imposing a ban on themselves will have much effect on their punishment

Urban

Lied about having taken the Utah job, and used ND to squeeze more money out of Florida. I'd guess he's the new HC in Columbus, but it's not out of the question that this is more of the same, and that he ends up someplace like UCLA. If the heat at UF was too much, don't see how Ohio is a great fit.

Considering he wasn't

Considering he wasn't broadcasting today, I'm pretty sure it may, potentially, probably, kinda, maybe happen.  I think if it does happen, the first thing tsiO will have to do is get a good criminal attorney on the football staff (based on Florida's arrest record under Meyer).  I also think his hiring isn't going to change much.  Florida absolutely stunk on offense once Dan Mullen left to coach at Miss. St. and the defense dropped off once Charlie Strong and Greg Mattison both left.

If he goes to ND then the

If he goes to ND then the rumors about him having an affair while at Florida make sense. No way that ND is the place you go for a stress-free coaching environment.

I hope Brian Kelly stays there for as long as he can. He is a total douche and every time I see him "talking" to his players I can't help but think a top recruit asks himself, is this the type of guy I want to play for?

I dont

think he has taken it yet. Now on Dec. 10th when the NCAA rules on the whole scandal we will see. But if they get USC treatment like 30 lost schollies and 2 or 3 year bowl ban I doubt he takes the job. I think he waits till that decision before his decision imo.

Since you mentioned Desmond...

I think the next time Chris Speilman does a UofM game, I want Desmond in the booth with him.  Yeah, Speilman is fair, Ok, not bad, blah, blah, blah......  If I am going to get stuck with some Ohio alum doing the booth for a UofM football game, I want our Heisman guy next to him telling him to STFU Chris, when he stains himself, talking about Urban, Fickell, Miller, etc...I know he is trying not to be a homer, but you and I know, he is a cooler pooper just like the rest of them.....

Ohio.......beaten.....

"What about Luke Fickell?" pretty much sums up what Ohio's fans are thinking, just without the obsecenities, righteous indignation and Skoal stains.

John Cooper thing going for him.  With all Ohio's legal bills Luke's low salary could defray their unexpected costs.

I don't think Meyer will sign

I don't think Meyer will sign on until there's clarity on the FTM punishment. Either they hold off on an announcement until the NCAA hands down its sentence or they announce him as coach but it's conditional.

Oh the whole

not doing our game just so people know also he buried his dad this week and the short week with Thanksgiving plus not wanting to answer all these questions about the job could have played a role also. Doesnt mean he took the job or wants it.

The report I don't buy is

The report I don't buy is that Fickle will be retained on the staff with a new head coach.  If Meyer, or anyone else is hired, I would think the last person they would want hanging around is the previous head coach.  Keeping a position coach or two, I can see.  But if I'm Meyer, no way do I take the job with Fickle still around: there's just too great a risk of player and team disunity with that scenario. If Ohio goes for that, bully for them, but I wouldn't expect that to work out well.

recruiting?

I was listening to the radio after the game. It seemed to be some station/program out of Cleveland. They said that Fickle was a great recruiter, one of the top recruiters in the nation. Does anyone have any insight into this? I've never heard this before... but I haven't listened to any Ohio radio stations either. They also said that he might take the Akron? job. Really, it seemed that they know about as much as the maple tree outside my door.

This quote by Eddie George

This quote by Eddie George says about as much about the situation as anything:

"I think it's a done deal," George said, after watching the Buckeyes lose to the No. 15 Wolverines 40-34 at the Big House. "I think the signs are there and it's definitely going to happen. I think he's the perfect fit. He's a coach that wants to be at Ohio State and has ties to Ohio State. He said Ohio State is his dream job."

The only signs that are there are that he'd be a great fit.  The rest is just conjecture.  This just reeks of Harbaugh to Michigan for me

Dream Job

If true, this is like the third school he's described as a "dream job."  He left one at the alter (ND), and the other before the bottom fell out.  Although he is 6-7 years older, Hoke will be at Michigan longer than Urban will be at Ohio.

That may be morbidly prophetic

What does Urban's wife and family think?

"Yeah, go ahead, Urban.  Heart attacks are way overhyped."

I'm sure Ohio would love to have him.  But I think that there's a chance that Urban turns it down.

I thought I read somewhere

I thought I read somewhere this week that Urban has said he would only coach again if it was at OSU, ND, or Michigan... If I'm remembering that correctly (and I know it was at least something like that) then it sounds like it's more of a dream situation or dream platform than a specific dream job.  Hoke, on the other hand, would've walked to Michigan.

per ESPN: A person familiar

per ESPN:

A person familiar with the situation said Meyer has already offered two of his former assistants -- Florida linebackers coach/special teams coordinator D.J. Durkin and strength and conditioning coordinator Mickey Marotti -- a chance to join his staff at Ohio State.

It's a done deal

Spielman all but let the cat out of the bag today when he said of Luke Fickell: "Maybe he'll stay on [the staff] with Urban.  Who knows?"

Whatever the odds were

Whatever the odds were before, they just got a notch better when Miller spiked on 3rd and 6.

Meyer runs the spread

Richrod ran the spread. I am hoping Meyer finds the same success rr did. And ends up back in the PAC 10 in 5 years.

Today --> go blue!

No idea

Only time will tell. It still pisses me off that they cheat for 10 years and the "penalty" is getting "the best coach available". Again, not sure how it will all work out but you have to admit he is a damn good coach.

I like our coach

but he is a good coach...kind of going back to 10 year war.... two Ohio guys going at it...only difference, one did not work for the other on staff...but Mattison can be the link to both. . Go Blue!

Try tomorrow

Ohio will ignore the job posting law...because that is what it does...will claim no need to post.

Announcement will come tomorrow or Monday to allow him to start calling recruits "legally."

It is as sure as Urban's mental illness/lack of family time/heart attack that wasn't/I want to be a telecaster/I'm alive, where am I?

do you think..

Do you think when Meyer was smashing tsio in the title game that he looked at Mattison and told him to call of the dogs because tsio is his dream job?  I bet Mattison would have told him to shove it and that he was going to crush the Bucks like the lil sisters of the poor.
