ESPNews is carrying it live in case anyone didn't read the other thread.
This just in from Columbus...
If anyone didn't catch the news conference, the nitty gritty is right here: https://www.nmnathletics.com//pdf8/745702.pdf?ATCLID=205112065&SPSID=877...
That's the document OSU sent to the NCAA reporting this violation. It's frankly stunning that Tressel and the AD are still trying to cover up this mess with half-truths at a news conference when the truth is right here for all to see, from their own institution no less.
The relevent bits are at the end of pages 2 and 3. Tressel received three seperate emails nearly 8 months in advance detailing exactly what was going on and which players were involved. He pretended he was going to act on this info and then did nothing about it, acting like he wasn't allowed to report these problems because the attorney providing the info requested anonymity. In a recent follow-up interview with the OSU admin Tressel indicated he thought he should stay silent because of a criminal investigation, but it's clear from what was going on that he was grasping at straws at that point, knowing he was about to get busted (he admitted as much). Doesn't take much reading between the lines to realize he was just sitting on this info, hoping not to get caught. Let's hope the NCAA does a proper investigation, becuase if they do there's no way these puny punishments will be enough.
to Columbus. They'll get to the bottom of this real quick! Someone call Rosenberg and Snyder... they'll give us all sorts of scathing anonymous quotes from disgruntled former OSU players.
Tressel will only be able to coach at Spring Practice if he promises to return next season.
The NCAA will investigate and hopefully give out a more severe penalty. I hope 20-30 years from ESPN does a 30/30 on the Ohio St Univ getting the death penalty ala SMU. In all seriousness, I think a more severe penalty is on it's way.
What makes you think more is on the way?
The NCAA still has to investigate, no? Surely they will find more evidence of wrongdoing in that corrupt cesspool of an athletic department?
They don't need to find anything else. Hopefully Pearl and Tressel are both professional assistants within the year.
Of course that's what you would say. That actually looks a little like a puppy me and my girlfriend went to see at Petland, although it's not the same kind of dog.
Bernese mountain dog, get one. Mine breaks everything in the house but we love her.
Well Tressel lied right? Im going to use a few examples of people/programs who lied and what their repercussions were.
Dez Bryant: lied about knowing or having dinner with PrimeTime and that cost him a whole season
SMU: we all know that story. Basically, their program was beheaded. Tressel's actions are not in the same league as SMU, just using it as an example.
Bruce Pearl: Lied about having a recruit over for a party. Correct me if Im wrong, but I think that is what went down. He got suspended 8 conf. games by the SEC. More punishment might be on the way from the NCAA.
So those are just a few examples. I would say what Tressel did would be #2 behind SMU for worst offense. He knowingly withheld information about his players breaking rules. Ya I get the whole I want to protect my players, Im scared meme, but that was wrong. There is no excuse for what he did. If Pryor and company receieved a 5 game suspension, shouldnt Tressel's be more? He knew what was going on and kept quiet. He is the guy in charge of those players and that program. I would think that warrants more than a 2 game suspension. I could be wrong. But this is how I feel and it is just my opinion. You may think this is crazy and thats fine, this is just my view of it and would not be surprised to see more games added.
Oh and doesnt OSU lead the nation in most self-imposed penalties since 2000? I saw it on twitter, but I forgot whos account it was. It was over 350 I think.
Bruce Pearl got more than that, his salary was reduced $1mil over the next few years, and he is not able to go off campus for recruiting as well.
that's too bad. they're really going to need him against akron and toledo.
WHY THE FUCK IS THE BIG EAST WOMEN'S TOURNEY ON ESPN?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Edit: It's on BTN.
it's on ESPNNEWS fwiw
I didn't know the channel offhand. I went straight to BTN after it wasn't on ESPN. Thanks though, +1.
Because their layups are fundamentally sound?
Hey no disrespect to the UConn/ND teams (well okay maybe ND) but they kept advertising that this press conference would be on, and they went from SC to the game instead.
Such a chicken shit penalty. I hope the NCAA digs deeper and nails them for failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance.
Seconded. TRESSEL FLAT OUT LIED TO THE NCAA, AND HE GETS A SLAP ON THE WRIST.
I'm hoping this isn't the end of it. Tressel is a liar. Period. How anyone can say that he has any integrity left is beyone me.
So wait, was this the story that people were talking about a week or so ago talking about a major top 13 program being in serious trouble? Or was that Oregon?
I believe Oregon (which doesn't seem that big, news-wise, somehow) but damn do I love Yahoo... They consistently are the front runners in catching programs.
I'm pretty sure they were talking about Oregon. Once a radio host who hasn't broken any news in his entire life knows about it, it's just a matter of hours before it'll leak to everyone else.
However, I think this will end up being the bigger story and is much closer to what Cowherd described. It is weird to call Oregon a top 10-12 program (they're top 2 this year and, like, top 40 all-time) and they are not going to get blown up from what i've read.
Let Michigan, OSU, and Oregon serve as a lesson to other college programs: have competent compliance officers, tell the truth, and for the love of god stretch legally!
is it just me or does it seem like mich got hit harder for practice gate? he knowingly withheld violations and wouldn't have said a word if the feds hadn't come across the osu stuff the crooks sold and contacted tosu
These are self-imposed sanctions, not the NCAA's final ruling.
Exactly, and one can hope that after the bowl game shenanigans, this time the NCAA will pull out a make-up call.
So he misses Akron and Toledo? Lovely. I like that OSU is the most penalized program in D1-A over the past 10 years and every single time the punishments are so minor... Failure to promote atmosphere of compliance anyone?
Are the games he would be missing. What a joke.
hey, already without those 6 players and now without their coach, this just might be the year OSU finally loses to an instate school
Such fucking bullshit
So does this leave them open for further investigation or what?
While tsio hopes that by handing down these weak penalties the NCAA will accept this punishment and move on, history shows that it isnt quite that easy. There most certainly will be (if not, then the NCAA needs to be investigated) a thorough investigation into the football program which will uncover more violations. Also, Tressel's bit about treating the kids like his own because of having "a player murdered" and "a player incarcerated" issimply a red herring to distract people from his own mistakes. How can this man preach accountability when he refuses to accept full responsibility for his own actions?
Wow. What a crock..
and if we didn't you all would have never heard about this and no suspension would have happened...thank you that is all...move along nothing to see here
Is that you Richard Nixon?
Gerald Ford is not there to pardon him and promptly get beaned by a stray golf ball.....
OSU claiming they decided to "self-report" it? B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T. The only reason they did that is because Tressel got caught with his pants down for all of the media to see. If that did not happen, no where would they be telling the NCAA about this violation.
For whatever reason, this will be enough and the NCAA will say, "OK, cool."
I hope (at least outsie of OH) that everyone is now aware of a complete pattern of SHENANIGANS!
I need to go get my broom.
Has the NCAA accepted this bullshit self sanctions yet? He lied to the investigators. If this stands, it is utter fucking shit. They better at least have to vacate this season for the cover up.
Remember this is just the b-s from Columbus. It'll be another 6 months or so before we hear nothing from the NCAA.
At least his credability has taken a hit, as it should. Perhaps the name Senator is appropriate...behind the good facade is just a self serving ass looking out what is good for himself, and will bend/break the rules as he sees fit.
He said he did it with good intent???
He will say what any good white cheater says when caught:
"I misinterpretted the rules."
Star Wars, South Park and Slap Shot all in the same day? Niiiiice.
I was confused and slightly offended, then I remembered that episode and giggled.
Federal drug trafficking email??? Curious to see how this story finishes.
There's no way that they don't get investigated after this...there will be more sanctions imposed and I can't wait to watch their program burn
He just said he's had a player murdered. TP hasn't told him yet about everybody?
Don't think the NCAA can ignore this one.
Relax guys, he just took so long because he cared more about the kids than NCAA violations.
I am so confused. I thought he just didn't know about tats. Were the tats paid for with drugs? Were the gold pants actually spray painted rock cocaine?
I would wildly speculate that the tat guy was tied up in a drug conspiracy and in tracking his cash flow they came up with the trinket dealing. At minimum though, this means those 5 were tied up with a character more unsavory than the average college town booster.
This is just the school's self-imposed penalties. Tressy will still have to go before the NCAA where they will determine if he lied to them in December. If it is determined that he lied to the NCAA they will come down on him similar to what they are going to do the Bruce Pearl at Tennessee.
The original Pearl suspension was handed down by the SEC (shocking, I know). Where is the Big Ten? He needs to be suspended for some Big Ten games... this is ridiculous.
anyone else have no fucking clue what tressel is rambling about?
Yeah I'm sorta lost. I didn't expect talk about a drug trafficking email so I had a hard time figuring it out.
Brian needs to do a UFR on this presser.
He is talking in circles even though he said at the onset that he would not do that.
awwww...jimmy was just concerned for the well being of his pwayers :( didn't know they'd get in twubble
"Coach Tressel's decision (to hide NCAA violations) was from the heart"--haha...nice one Gene!
Trying to hide behind a federal investigation is shit. He is flat out admitting to covering up the whole thing.
"Obviously I didn't know." Yeah right.
Who suspended Pearl for half of the SEC's league games - the SEC or Tennessee? Considering they both lied to the ncaa it wouldn't look to good if the SEC levies a harsher penalty than the big ten or Tennessee levies a harsher penalty than OSU.
The SEC did, Tennessee fined him $1.5 million.
The NCAA bought off on the 5 game suspensions for the players, and it was ridiculous and everyone knew it. They took a huge hit in credibility in exchange for the bowl $. But Tressel WAS A PARTY TO all those discussions, and didn't say a word. He said things during those discussions about morals and punishment and redemption. He said 5 games would do it and his boys would make it right. And he was lying to their face the whole time, and even if they wanted to sweep it under the rug they can't - Yahoo exposed it.
The NCAA can't ignore this, it would mean the end of their organization. And like everyone else, they love themselves more than anything else.
2 games isn't nearly the end here. I don't know why the NCAA allowed themselves to be quoted by the AD as being involved with TSIO's investigation, but it's odd. 2 games is odd, the whole presser was odd. My guess is that today was just a stall tactic until they figure out what the hell to do.
What a steaming vat of crap. He was maintaining confidentiality? Who believes this?
I dont remember learning about that one in school...?
He's using the word "probably" a lot. I "probably should have" done this, and it "probably would have been a good idea" to do that.
I just want to know what actually happened.
That's probably "confidential" also.
Total slap on the wrist
Media: TRESSEL COULD BE FIRED
George Bush quote!? FIRE HIS ASS!!!
not political at all but maybe Bush isn't the best person to quote from.
Quoting George Bush? :laughs:
Like tell my bosses and our lawyers about a MAJOR EFFING RISK to the University?
i fucking hate ohio state.
tressel is a complete liar (so is the AD standing next to him). here he is a head coach of a top program for 10 yrs, yet he says he didn't have a good understanding of how to handle legal issues.
WHAT A CROCK!!! he admitted he's had a player murdered, others involved in drugs and others incarcerated during his coaching career. yet he doesn't know to go to the universities legal council to seek advice when an issue arises.
complete nonsense. the ncaa better hit these lying bastards hard!
He should get a hell of a lot more than a hand slap, but I'm glad he isn't gone because all we would have heard from the a-holes from that "school in Ohio" was that we couldn't have beat Tressel.
"Now Tressel is quoting George Bush."
There's no chance the NCAA 'accepts' these self imposed sanctions....there will be an investigation that uncovers more than we can imagine
I have a sinking feeling that this will be the end of it. The school hires lawyers who would recommend a self-sanction that would appease the NCAA. They would only do a 2 game suspension if they thought they would get away with it.
He's a liar. He fessed up because he got caught. There's no backing away from this. If not the end, it's the beginning of it
The incoherence of that screamed guilty. But the George Bush quote might as well be the nail in the coffin.
From the Bucknuts forums:
"What happens to the person that sold out the program? They must be somebody close, a compliance person, the person that came to Tress with the info on the players. Tressel must know who it is. My question is obviously this person if we find out who it is, is going to get all kinds of blame. Think Steve Bartman type treatment. Death threats and stuff like that. They will for certain have to move out of C-bus. Whistle blowers aren't usually treated kindly no matter what business they are in. So what happens to him/her? And if you were this person, would you have turned your program in? A program that you love?"
Classy OSUfan. You should see all the replies in support.
but i'm sure the informant was thinking of the players. and how coach tressel could help these players. they were thinking only of the best interests of these players.
can't you understand that?
justin boren is a double agent
I think a lot of people here would go to the AD and tell them they have a chance to self-report before they do it themselves, and know its for the good the program in the long run. Thats definately what I would do.
He should be dubbed Saint Tressel by the Pope.
Where are the notice of allegations, the deep muliple months investigations, and the hearings before the NCAA? So this guy gets to own up to lying only after the media outed him, and gets this all to go away instantly by sitting out a couple cupcake games and writing a check?
This doesn't warrant a finding of lack of institutional control or failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance or any of that bad stuff? Or at least an investigation into whether that exists.?
Come on. This is nonsense. Total nonsense. This is an insult to every school that has been put through hell for lesser offenses than lying to the NCAA.
I know a bunch of you predicted this but I really thought that school in Ohio would rise up to do the right thing. . .instead they are rushing to defend his character. Gangsta' justice.
And what is all of this BS about feelings? That's their defense, he feels bad? This is so far over the top that I'm not sure the national media can ignore it.
this is such a show! Excuse me while I hurl.
He's also sorry about everything that went down at Youngstown State too. So, all is well, so well.
"I am sorry and disappointed this happened. At the time the situation occurred, I thought I was doing the right thing"
Yes, because hiding serious violations involving 5 of your best players from the NCAA is obviously the right way to go about things. I mean, all that serious language in your contract and the NCAA bylaws is just for show.
Seriously, if the NCAA doesn't bring the hammer down here.... well sadly I won't be surprised one bit. To me this is every bit as bad as the Reggie Bush situation. At least the USC admin could feign ignorance...
This has to be worse than the USC situation or even the Ed Martin situation because it was THE COACH of the football team that has already admitted guilt. Not a booster, an agent, not a player's family member, THE COACH.
I realize people are pissed at OSU's response, but this isn't over.
ROFL at this tweet from Every day should be Saturday.
"You'll all be laughing your asses off when Ohio State scores 80 points a game without Tressel hitting the brakes in the 2nd quarter."
If OSU self-reported doesn't that make Dan Wetzel an employee of Ohio State? This is hilarious. Anger+Joy
So basically Terrelle Pryor PROBABLY sold some drugs. THAT'S HOW HE RENTED ALL THOSE CARS.
It's actually this year; only about 8 months to go now.
Did you forward the e-mails? Tressel nods. AD jumps in and starts babbling.
People in Cbus, where I live, are waiting for the inevitable NCAA investigation.
Eh, it doesn't matter at this point, as an NCAA investigation takes forever. Perhaps after this season or next season as the NCAA starts to levy their sanctions, Tressel will retire and an new coach coming in prepared for the hammer will come in and the whole transition and sanctions will be taken a lot lighter. Basically by delaying the issue, they can prepare for the future, thus reducing the whole punishment.
Firing Steve Fisher did not reduce our punishment. The NCAA goes after institutions. The coach, if he leaves, typically gets off scot-free.
This is assuming that the NCAA actually comes down with something severe enough to not have any preparedness matter. What I'm saying is that by imposing a minimal penalty, and the glacial pace the NCAA moves at, OSU can now prepare itself (i.e. bank scholarships, preapre staff, etc.) for a penalty. This will severely reduce the actual effect of a punishment, unless again, that the punishment is severe enough that it won't matter. I don't see this happening. Plus those players should be declared ineligable for the past season.
It would be great to see the Scarlet Wall of Denial fall, and some truth finally come out of Columbus. All it would take is one, and the floodgates may open. I would love to see TSIO vacate the last three victories over Michigan, at the very least. It would be even better of the Memorabilia Five were all shown to have participated in the coverup and lied to NCAA investigators, resulting in season-long suspensions for them.
And it would be the absolute best to see TSIO get all of this plus about three years of probation with no bowls and severely limited schollies and recruiting.
Where is this presser being held? It kind of looks like my Middle School Earth Science classroom.
Wrapping himself in the flag of OSU.
I think the punishment is appropriate for failing to report the initial concerns to his AD or compliance department.
What's missing, still, is the fact that Tressel intentionally misled the NCAA even after the shit hit the fan. NCAA will NOT accept just the self-reported penalty on that one.
This is one of the winning-est programs of the last decade. The whole Cam Newton saga should have shown everyone what a farce the NCAA really is. U-M got the book thrown at them by comparison. Nothing will come of this. Nothing.
Auburn never admitted to doing anything, though. Tressel just did and they'll go after him.
USC was one of the winningest programs of the past decade too and the NCAA had no problem dropping the hammer on them.
Their stupid story can't even stand up to these questions. I laughed out loud as the vest stared into space trying to figure out how to explain when he thought his failure to disclose was a problem.
That was the best moment of the presser. Tressel spending 10 seconds thinking of how to respond to a seemingly simple question. Does Gordon Gee look ridiculous to anyone else?
Not only is Tressel officially a liar, he wants us all to think he is somewhat ignorant. The 'aw-shucks' approach won't work with the NCAA.
Failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance
It's a choose your own adventure!
You are informed players are selling merchandise, but are asked to keep it quiet.
If you inform compliance that perhaps players need to be educated on the relevant NCAA bylaws concerning impermissable benefits, turn to page whocaresitdidn'thappen
if you do nothing. Turn to page 2
YOU ARE SLAPPED ON THE WRIST! IT STINGS SOOOOO BAD!
Even granting the confidentiality request, this is pretty simple, I should think.
This is hilarious, shameful, and not entirely surprising all at the same time. Local news coverage in CBus cut the national news short a few minutes just to cover the press conference. Now the whole city can see what their savior hath wrought.
From now on, when you see someone wearing OSU gear or O-H I-O T-shirts, pity them. Pity them for buying into a lie, pity them for not seeking out the facts sooner, pity them for supporting the wrong side. Because Coach Tressel, the Teflon Don himself, has been caught red-handed. OSU family values? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
adds at least an additional three game suspension for Tressel, two or three years of probation, and they may or may not take some schollies away.
They need to vacate wins for playing with ineligable players. Plus the whole LYING TO THE NCAA I think should carry some stiffer penelties. I mean come on! They all went out there in Dec and said no one new anything until they found out in Dec. But now Tressel admits he new long before. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here!
Also did the AD say that they submitted the self report today? I thought he said that near the beginning, and then tried to play it off like the news story was nothing new.
Does this mean they're losing streak against the SEC is back on? A-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha. Can this day get any better?
"The integrity of this coach is absolutely superb."
This is like listening to Charlie Sheen. The president should just say, "winning, duh."
they just asked the prez if he had any thought of dismissing tressel.
answer: "no! are you kidding? i just hope coach tressel doesn't dismiss me!"
that is so hilarious beyond belief. it is now totally on record that the tail wags the dog!
WTF??? "I'm just happy the coach didn't fire me." WTF? Could you imagine MSC or Brandon saying this? This guys is an unbelievable weeny.
Shouldn't he get AT LEAST a 5 game suspension, just like the players did?
UM paid the independent firm to investigate our over-stretching.
What a joke.
Did anyone catch Gordon Gee when asked if dismissing Tress was ever an option he said something along the lines of "heavens no I'd be afraid he would dismiss me."? Some kind of president they have down there.
Edit: guess so... at least everyone saw how ridiculous that was
I love how it's dated today.
We self-report violations! But only when someone else figures out we did something bad...
The letter is not even accurate. In the opening comments there is a comment regarding Tressel not being allowed to participate in Spring Practices and that he will be suspended 'several' games. In the Punitive Actions section there is no reference to spring practices and 'several' is re-defined as 2 games. Looking like amature hour in Columbus.
AND the faculty representative (Bruno) and Gene Smith don't know where to sign the letter ... they signed underneath their names...
It is certainly interesting that the HC from TSIO didn't report any additional knowledge when had the chance, several times over. AND WE'RE ON PROBATION? I'm talkin' 'bout PRACTICE!
I knew it would be a total washover when I saw the blank white backdrop behind them.
Complete joke all around, could only listen to about 2 minutes of Tressel and left as soon as he started proclaiming how he was trying to do the right thing and was concerned.
blah blah blah.
The only way this goes further is if the FBI starts investigating OSU, otherwise they'll just wash over everything. How many bullets can one man dodge?
lol if the NCAA lets it go at 2 games there officially a joke, those 2 games are preseason games who cares. first 2 games of the big ten schedule ok.
now does anyone know when he is suspended for 2 games does that mean he can run practices still just can't be at the game? same for the players will they get to participate in spring practice and practice before the msu game?
Another Mandel tweet from Ixcuincle's link above:
"Tressel signed an NCAA Certificate of Compliance form on Sept. 13, 2010 indicating he has reported any knowledge of possible violations."
How is that not lying to the NCAA?
where is the frickin legal council to address whether what questions can or can't be answered.
He effing lied to them and they stand up there defending him like he's the Pope. Unbelievable.
If what Tressel and OSU are saying is true, I think the punishment is fair, although three or four games would also be fair. The fine seems fair, too.
His violation had nothing to do with cheating in recruiting or trying to gain a competitive advantage like the SEC cheating coaches and alums who pay players and their families.
If the NCAA tacks on a game or two, that would also be fair.
Tressel's rep takes the biggest hit -- he capitalizes on that to win credit from recruits' parents and this violation will damage his pitch to moms and dads.
It will be very interesting to see how this affects his public perception -- his fellow coaches have always had great things to say about Tressel, even those he beat with consistent regularity. Announcers and commentators like Musberger, Herbsteit, Holtz and others worship the guy.
several players were given cash and other improper benefits. amatuer status is gone. games could be forfeited. i doubt it happens, but i can't wait for a thorough investigation by the ncaa of the entire program.
He apparently has players involved in a drug ring, not to mention he knew he was playing ineligible players, and lying to the NCAA in doing so. Are you serious?
tressel is claiming he found out about the players amidst a drug investigation. the govt only found out about the players bc they were investigating a separate drug issue involving the tattoo parlor guy. the players are not associated with the drug element but osu is claiming to disclose how they knew about player activities would reveal the ongoing legal matter involving the dealer.
happy fat tuesday everybody!
Cutaway from press conference to last year's B1G tourney game...
needs to step in and say that's not enough you're suspended for the first 2 Big Ten games.
Also where's Herbie?
I am more pumped than ever for Nov 26th to arrive and kick the crap out of Tressel and OSU
Basically saying "Tressel's voice quivered, and he seemed emotional. He really must be sorry.." And Pres. Gee's comments are, frankly, disgusting. This is why you don't have some jocksniffer as your college president.
Wrist slap accomplished. Let's not act like we're surprised.
Someone with some sense in the thread, With Newton running roughshod over these guys and the "hey you guys can play in the bowl, but only because you promised you thought it was okay" from the tatoo issue, the NCAA has clearly shown the complete lack of any backbone when enforcing rules violations. Wait sorry, Tressel and OSU cheated!?!?! Shocking, simply schocking. This cannot go unpunished!
How are those two situations similar at all? Tressel just came out in public and admitted to serious aligations. The NCAA will have to go after it because everyone knows for a fact that something was going on. I don't recall Auburn's situation being that unambiguous.
Uncovering what the NCAA ignores for around ten years now.
when posters speculated he would be suspended for two games. Then that's what happened! We got SANCTIONS for exercising an extra 15 minutes a week. There is no justice in this world--hell, we are used to that. But jeebus.
The only silver lining that I can see is that the tied of public opinions turns strongly against the Buckeyes. Sadly, we've been tarnished with the same brush.
Does anyone else get the feeling that the tide is turning in relationship to the rivalry? RR gets fired (fair or not) got the media off our back and separates us from our, minute in comparison, violations. We have Hoke who seemingly can do no wrong. We have the QB with a smile that can light up any room, wheels like we haven't seen in a long time, and most importantly a TEAM first attitude. Meanwhile, tuos is seemingly in shambles with 5 players and their coach suspended and a recruit who was arrested for groping 15 year old girls that was still offered a scholarship. The media is starting to report what we have seen all along. It wont be long until we retake our rightful place as the true superpower in the B1G
But our rightful place, at least for the last 60 years or so, has been as one of two true football superpowers in the Big Ten.
Let's not delude ourselves. We're in the midst of a seven-game losing streak, and they've won a heck of a lot more national championships during that time frams. Sure, we won a ton 70 - 100 years ago, but Michigan and OSU have together owned the Big Ten for a long time.
I'd be content with a return to the Big Two and the Little Ten.
Most of their titles were in the 60's. They owned us in the 50's and 60's. The 10 years war was even but we dominated them in the 80's and 90's. Let's get back to that.
but you must remember a different 80's -- the rivalry
was quite even then, with many close games.
Well I was young and only remember from Harbaugh on and the only loss I remember was Earle Bruce's last game.
The NCAA will have the final word on all of this.
I just hope they realize that he can say anything he wants, but the bottom line is that he knew of potential problems and did NOTHING about it. NOTHING.
He had better hope he came out with these emails the instant the NCAA started investigating in December.
Also, I hope the NCAA realizes that if the December news didn't come out, Tressel would still be sitting on this. He's only discussing it because they got caught.
He should have at least consulted with the OSU Compliance Department and it seems he didn't do that either. This whole thing just looks bad.
today is so perfect
I'm so happy
things can only get better from here
I have to confess to taking some perverse pleasure in the idea of OSU have to squirm as this NCAA investigation drags on for the next year. Enjoy Buckeyes, because it's not fun.
It's going to be a loooong offseason in CBus. I'm going to have a lot of fun with my OSU friends. <evil cackle>
If Ted Ginn Sr. is as ethical and upstanding a person as he claims to be, hopefully Michigan can make some inroads at Glenville HS now. He'd have to be an unthinking pawn to keep directing all of his best players to Ohio State now.
OSU President Gordon Peewee Herman is all in for Tressel, They will go down together. Two, for the price of one.
He's one of the foremost opponents to a FBS playoff system.
The "respecting the confidentiality of the investigation" claim is a decent line of defense, even though it is not sufficient to save himself from self-imposed and maybe additional conference and NCAA penalties.
I don't think it's a good defense at all. If it were so confidential and inactionable then how did he get alerted? And once it was brought to his attention he could have well arranged for whatever confidentiality it required so that he could disclose it to school officials.
I love how Tressel even admited that the lawyer who e-mailed him the stuff wasn't from the federal government. Yet they are still trying so "protect a federal investigation". But only until after the important games of the season are over.
At the very least, he had the right and the duty to share the emails with the legal counsel for tsio. It was interesting during the conference when the question was asked as to whether the emails had been forwarded, they quickly avoided an answer. Assuming that an NCAA investigation doesn't void FOIA requests, I would think those emails shouldn't be hard to obtain.
Kind of appreciate Brandon after watching their AD stumble and repeat himself about half a dozen times.
Stay tuned...this ain't over.
Attorney/Client priveledge will block e-mails to the Uni's legal counsel. If it got forwarded elsewhere, it might show up elsewhere.
Charlie Sheen thinks Tressel is a winner and has lion blood.
What a coincidence that the two games Tressel was suspended for are against the Little Sisters of the Poor.
I thought it was a beautiful thing. I mean Ohio State's coach had a press conference in March with the opener, "So there was this federal drug probe..." And then rambles along like the last days of Lenny Bruce going on about getting caught in the system, victimized...blah, blah, blah. I hope Coach Hoke goes on a tour of Ohio and eats baked goods in the home of every target and shows them the difference between Michigan and Ohio State. I love it. Bring on the NCAA investigation, the two games, the five games, this will go on and on....
we get our pick of recruits from Ohio State for the next few years. Srsly
when the reporter asked Tressel if he forwarded the emails to anyone and he said yes and the AD jumped right in to stop all that...
they should vacate all the games that the players played since he had this knowledge.
If he had properly reported this knowledge, an internal investigation followed by player suspensions would have taken place mid-season. Therefore these games were played with ineligible players and should be losses.
I addition, this is willful non-compliance. If the NCAA lets this slap on the wrist go- why can't other coaches hide player non-compliance in the hope for a good season and say "I'm sorry" after a 12-1 season and a bowl win?
Oh well - ha ha - sorry - ;)
I'll let my assistants "coach" vs Little Sisters of the Poor and hand over 3% of my salary.
If only the Free Press covered Ohio State Athletics...this would be called Vest Gate...
the osu punishment may be dictating the consequences out of conference. given the pearl punishment of half of the conference games, they may be expecting this as well. what i mean is basically they're expecting this to supplement the punishment the ncaa dishes out.
not saying as much, though, makes it a joke.
Add additional sanctions. But I don't think they will be career-ending. I think a reduction of the number of scholarships could be one; probation another. A third possibility would be disallowing OSU from playing in a bowl game next year.
But beyond that, I have a hard time seeing this turn into anything bigger, unless the investigation turns into one of "loaner" cars and improper benefits over the 10 year period.
not sure if this is been posted yet, but here is OSU's report to the NCAA.
and DAMN does that look damning. also states there were 9 big ten rings, I wounder who the other 3 guys are?
Hilarious that the lawyer inserted so many 'no surprises' here comments after mentioning specific player names. I also like Tressel's comment about using collateral before handing out the 2009 rings.
Holy shit. This is some incredible stuff.
On March 8, 2011 Jim Tressel was suspended by Ohio State the first two games of the 2011 season and fined $250,000 for failing to notify the school of NCAA violations involving Ohio State football players and a financial arrangement with a local tattoo parlor in which five Ohio State football players were suspended for trading championship rings, jerseys and awards for tattoos. Ohio State President Gordon Gee assured the public that Tressel will not lose his job. President Gee is hopeful that Coach Tressel will not dismiss him.
That no one is investigating the loaner cars that Pryor gets to test drive to fucking Pennsylvania!? How does that get brushed aside?
While the news brings a smile to my face, I hope it's not the end. For Tressel not to report it, lie about it, and then try play it off as if he didn't understand the rules is ridiculous!! A two game suspension against " little sisters of the poor " type teams is laughable!! The NCAA has a chance to redeem itself ( somewhat ) by doing the right thing and bringing more severe punishment to Tressel and whomever else is involved!! Can't help but think that the coach isn't the only one who may have caught wind of it before it got out.
So I happen to be a U of M alum who lives in C-bus...Needless to say my current emotional state (joy!,glee!!,supreme happiness!!) is much different than most here in this city. Anyway, I'm paying particular attention to the local media here in Columbus and caught this particular exchange that a local reporter had with tosu prez. Gordan Gee.
Reporter:"Has the thought of dismissal ever crossed your mind?"
Gee: "No are you kidding. Let me just be very clear in the umm, ahh, urr , umm, agh, yer..I'm just hopefull the coach doesn't dismiss me."
I am completely serious that is it verbatim, save for perhaps some the proper phonetics during Gee's stammering bit.
Stay classy Gee. Stay classy tosu. Stay classy Columbus!
I am so thankful that TeePEE didn't come to Michigan and went to tOSU.
Karma is a bitch.
