But I don't think either one has the potential to be a shut-down corner. Woolfolk wasn't exactly amazing before he got hurt, and floyd flashed good ability but lacks experience. I think both are potential solid big 10 corners.

They're still our best two corners, though. I hope they rehab like champs so we can trot out something resembling a defense for our stellar 2011 campaign.

Good God. Is there some witch curse or spell cast on UofM that we don't know about? We will surely be helping the draft stock of the rest of the QBs we face this year.

When does a severely sprained ankle with ligament damage require surgery versus the RICE method I used as a HS athlete (rest, ice, compression and elevation)? It just seems like every injury these days requires surgery.

Does surgery accelerate the healing process?

I'll bet the injuries I sustained back in the 70's would require surgery by today's standards.

Every ankle sprain is a degree of torn ligaments, as was explained to me by a trainer in college. I slightly tore ligaments in my left ankle while also tearing the lining between the tibia and fibula. I was told I did not need surgery. However, I was in a boot for about 4 weeks. Then rehab for another 4. My ankle has never been right since then and I am going in to see a specialist in the coming weeks. My guess is I will now need surgery.

JT is a cornerback and I was/is a 300 lb OT. His ankle will heal better than mine by virtue of being lighter and better athlete in better shape. But these injuries are tough.

Depends on the severity of the ligament damamge. Sometimes surgery and natural healing will about the same time frame. In that case, doctors will normally recommend against surgery.

However, if there is more serious damage than that they will normally recommend surgery. If its somethign severe enough you might not have a choice but to have surgery.

I say this only from personal experience with ligament and miniscus damage to both my knees and ligament damage to my ankle. So it might be differently if you are an athlete on a college team.

A sprain is usually treated with conservative measures.  You can have a very bad injury that you will often hear referred to as a "high ankle sprain".  What this is is a tearing of the syndesmosis complex which is a confluence of soft tissues that keep your tibia and fibula in relation to one another.  A lot of times people fracture their ankles as the energy overwhelms them, sometimes the energy tears the interosseous complex and the tibia and . fibula splay open as seen here.  This picture shows someone with fractures but ignore the cracks in the bone and look at the before picture where the two bones are far apart, then after it is fixed they are snug together to support the bone beneath it (talus bone) which makes up your ankle joint.  A couple screws hold the ankle joint so it heals adequately.  I don't know JT's exact injury but that is one scenario where an ankle injury has no fractures but still requires surgery (again pretend no breaks in the bone just splaying of the tibia and fibula).

By the Spring everyone around here will be talking about JT Floyd like he's an All Big Ten CB.

(Sorry. I'm stuck in my bitter phase right now.)

when you all negged me hard last year for suggesting that our future might have been officially sealed on the day Donovan declared...

In related news, why can't moral victories be more satisfying?

I am not sure where, but I am sure Kovacs could forget how to tackle and Avery could realize he is actually a converted QB and demand offensive reps?

At this point I think humor is best for all

start moving offensive players to defense.  Better yet here's how we should play for the next 4 weeks.  Defense all out blitz except one safety and play man coverage.  Just try to get the sacks and take our chances

If I was a defensive recruit I would look at where our defense is and jump at the great opportunity for making an immediate impact.  Where else is that as likely?

I'm guessing recruits would also look at the turmoil going on on our defensive side of the ball. Every recruit has dreams of making it to the NFL. I'm sure recruits question whether Gerg (or whoever is next) will prepare them enough for the NFL. It's not just about immediate playing time.

figures out he's not a robot before the game on Saturday. Seriously, did anyone else catch that shot of him on the sideline during the PSU game punching his arms in a robot-like motion?
