Jourdan Lewis tweets about his mother possibly exploiting him?

Submitted by Brandon_L on

Jourdan Lewis tweeted about his mother trying to take advantage of his status as an athlete for personal gain. Hopefully he can separate himself from this before she does something that could effect his eligibility. The fan base has your back Jourdan, Go Blue! https://twitter.com/jourdanjd/status/678389937742454784

[Ed-Ace: Locked. There's far too much in here to address individually, but I'd hope the primary concern here would be Jourdan—after he was forced to deal with a family issue he clearly wanted to keep private—and his well-being above anything else.]

The school might have some issues though, if they gave her special privileges for being his mom. not sure what kind of privileges athletes parents get as it is, especially in regards to tickets to games. Singing at the bball game was a dumb act on her part, but probably a non-issue to the NCAA since I doubt she got paid for it. Don't know about getting her into games though. if she wasn't going to get a ticket but weaseled her way into getting one from the AD or something then that might pose a problem. Then again the NCAA seems to be fine with exploiting student athletes themselves, so maybe they'd turn a blind eye if something fishy really was happening.

Im not sure that I have met a mother that would do something like that or something similar to that. On another note, I definately wouldn't want to tweet about my mom... Bad news for that family and hopefully it doesnt interfere with the program too much.

The capabilities of this staff to recruit, I hope if something came to light it wouldnt affect the scholarships the school is able to give out. That would be a major buzzkill (obviously it wouldnt affect this class, but future classes).

How about a serious level of concern for the young man? Apparently the woman is trying to get her hands on the small amount of cash that athletes recieve under the new rules (unless I'm interpreting what he said incorrectly). I don't see how this could have wider implications... That said, I hope that he can get some legal assistance to get through a very tough problem, and unfortunately it does not seem like an isolated incident.

I think there is concern for Jourdan. Just because someone asks legitimate questions about how this obviously horrible situation might have wider implications doesn't mean they don't support Jourdan. In fact I think acknowledging that it might have wider implications shows that people know that it's a bad situation all around.

I was referring to the folks who made the massive leap from a woman exploiting her son's name and (relative) fame to worrying about UM possibly providing impermissable benefits. Key words there, "massive leap." Student athletes at some schools are now provided a small stipend ($2,000 to $5,000) under the new rules in place this year. It seems as though the young Mr. Lewis is referring to that money. The focus should be on Jourdan Lewis working his way through a difficult situation rather than formulating some theory about possible "wider implications."

What can she possibly exploit him FOR?  I do not like to hear about priveleges to any athletes or their family, and for him to take an unprecedented step of tweeting this out makes me think certain safeguards have been comprimised and he is trying to get infront of the story before something broke.

claiming name for UM stuff (free tix, etc) and a parent can claim to be the main force in decisions while taking loans from agents, etc. They can cause a lot of damage just in that area. In "basic life" consider that your parents have ALL your personal information. You realize what you can get with just a SS# and name?

I'll be generous and assume that you're making this comment out of complete ignorance. Most parents, while not perfect, love and care for their children and, even if a headache, are pretty balanced.

Some are not. Take Patrick O'Sullivan's Dad or the parents of these celebrities or, closer to home, the parents of former Michigan star Jack Johnson. It's unpleasant but it is real.

And I say this as someone who strongly believes in the parent-child relationship, and that efforts should be made to repair them. But there are real situations where parents can harm their adult children, and Lewis believes he is dealing with this.

His mom sung the national anthem at the Michigan game tonight and apparently he didn't know about it until people told him on Twitter, and then he sent the tweet linked in the OP. No idea what it means, just hope it turns out ok for Jourdan.

The game tonight. It was brought to his attention when she was photographed and it was tweeted to him.

not really something I feel comfortable reading about. I feel bad for the kid, but I do wish I could give him some advice. There will probably come a time in his life that he would love to do anything like this for his mother. When I was his age I hated my parents, now I would do anything for more time with my mom.
