Jourdan Lewis Charged with Misdemeanor Domestic Violence
This will probably have to be locked, but below is the story:

Obviously we don't have all the facts, but definitely not a good look for him.
MOD EDIT: We're going to keep speculation to a minimum. K? K. Good talk.
MOD EDIT 2: To keep everyone from having to constantly monitor this thread, going to set it to read-only. Until new-thread-worthy details emerge, there's been plenty of discussion.
It's sad that somebody would want to control you so bad they would ruin your life over it.

Hopefully that means this is a fake accusation that will all be sorted out in a brief investigation.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
woof. not good if true...
Really, I just don't get it. You are about to get the payday of your life. This was pretty much a certainty for Jourdan for two years, in fact. If you are mad enough at a woman (or really, anyone else, man or woman) to put your hands on them, why not just walk the F**K away? You can then remember them badly while laughing as you are lying on your large pile of money making love to a bevy of new and attractive people...
According to the story, the police were unsure who the aggressor was here. So while I agree that there's no excuse for hitting anyone (especially a male athlete hitting a very likely smaller female), we should let the facts come in on this.
Lewis' girlfriend called police and said there had been a physical altercation at the residence, according to Lige. Officers initially were unable to determine who was the responsible party at the scene, he said.
"It wasn't clear to the officers (Wednesday morning) if there was an assault, or who the aggressor was," he added.
Also, the AAPD (like a number of other PDs) is pretty harsh on domestic violence calls. If the AAPD comes knocking on a domestic violence call, somebody's going to jail. And 9.5/10 times, that somebody's going to be male.
NOT excusing anything here, but this one looks especially foggy as to who did what to whom. Hope it is not major.
Did I say, at any point, that Jourdan Lewis should be immediately jailed, his name scrubbed from the UM record books, etc? No, I did not, and of course the process should be allowed to play out. And yes, I think the same thing about the football players at MSU, for instance; the rule of law and judicial process should apply to all.
That said, I still have no idea how guys that DO get in this trouble do so. it just makes no sense to me. That's all...
The way I read your post, it sounded like you were saying "Jourdan, why wouldn't you just walk away?", etc., which to me seemed like a judgment on Lewis on scant evidence. Seeing your follow-up, it sounds like your thought was more on the order of "why would anyone do this?". We'll chalk it up to a failure of reading comprehension on my part.
Agreed on that. While it rarely makes sense to lay hostile hands on someone, it especially makes little sense before a big payday (or if you are established in your profession).
OK. Imagine an argument with your girlfriend, and you give up on the yelling and just want to leave the room or apartment. She stands in your way to prevent you to leave. You still want to leave and push forward part her to exit. You're bigger and stronger. She falls down. Hits her head on wall or chair.
Boom! Domestic violence.
Call 911.
...to infer from your choice of words that you feel he's guilty. Thanks for clarifying you don't.
Right, but this has nothing to do with the cops now. The cops will always take precautions and arrest.
The prosecutor's office has done an investigation already and charged him though, about a half a day after his arrest. There has to be some type of evidence for them to formally file charges.
Foggy indeed, and there are still a lot of details that need to come out.
They apparently read the police report and charged him.
That stated, I doubt that the prosecutor's office did any more investigation than that (sometimes you'll call the arresting officer, but that's just going to corroborate the police report). You can certainly charge based on a police report, especially for a misdemeanor charge.
policies means your going to be arrested no matter what, regardless of what went down, who instigated and who touched who.
Whether "major" or "minor" incident, it doesn't really matter. Dude will now have a criminal record the rest of his life.
YEEEES. One of the best shows on right now.
And disagreeing with this in any way, shape or form makes a lot people both uncomfortable and indignant.

He was the last person i'd expect this to happen to. He's always posting about her. Hopefully not true or was overblown.
Definitely didn't see this coming. Harbaugh has sung the praises of Lewis' character on more than one occasion.
This is weird, though:
"It wasn't clear to the officers (Wednesday morning) if there was an assault, or who the aggressor was."
Whatever the situation, I hope it's dealt with properly.
...I remember there being at least one state in which an officer had to make an arrest if responding to a DV call.
According to the American Bar Association, Michigan is a "pro-arrest" state. Other options include "Officer's discretion" and "Mandatory Arrest." I'm not familiar with the term itself, but it appears to mean something along the lines of "If there's any doubt at all, make an arrest."
Right. However, it's one thing to take precautions and arrest the person, but being formally charged by the prosecutor's office is another.
We agree
I know someone who lived in Colorado for a while, and she had to call the police because her boyfriend assaulted her, and they both had to be arrested by law. AFAIK that is not the case in Michigan but the point is that there are weird laws (or at least they may seem weird to non legal types) with regards to domestic violence.
My guess is this: [MOD EDIT: aaaaaaand maybe let's not guess]
Could be plausible considering JD's tweet.
Lol @ the mod edit
Given how charged these threads can get, yet how relevant they are, I appreciate this Mod work. DMT doesn't need to go to Bolivia and the thread doesn't need to be iced (at least not yet) but this keeps things civil. I appreciate this restrained form of moderation.
This really, really saddens me. Just hope it isn't true.
He has been such a great representation of the program/school and has done so many positive things. Would really be bummed.
Hope everyone is okay, either way.
If true would be so disappointing for a person of Lewis's character throughout his Michigan days. But, we'll need to let the facts play out --- too bad that either way it impacts his draft stock. More importantly, I hope no one is harmed.
Why would this domestic assault charge be a misdemeanor? Are they all? Or is it more like he shoved her instead of punched?
Either way, this sucks.
...generally speaking there are different leves of assault. I think I remember Adrian Arrington being charged with assault for wrestling the keys to his car out of his girlfriend's hands.
Domestic violence is basically just a regular category of assault in terms of punishment. That means that simple domestic violence is a misdemeanor. It can get up to a felony if there are aggravating factors - a deadly weapon, or with murderous intent.
Interestingly, even some forms of aggravated domestic violence (even with a weapon) are still misdemeanors. System is kinda screwed up, in my opinion.
I admittedly don't know much about the process, so pardon my ignorance. It says the cops came at 1 am this morning, and he was charged at 4pm.
Is that relatively quick to get charged, meaning the evidence must be pretty damning, or is that a standard time frame? Any insight would be helpful.
Wow.
"It wasn't clear to the officers (Wednesday morning) if there was an assault, or who the aggressor was. Subsequent investigation led to a misdemeanor assault charge against Lewis."
We'll have to wait for the details of the case to come out but it was not a "clear-cut" case to officers who arrived at the scene. Either way, players should avoid situations where there might be an appearance of assault as they have a target sign on them.
double post
Dang.
Obviously everyone deserves to have the facts heard, but my general response is ugh.
