I believe Silas Redd's decision is expected tomorrow.
Josh Helmholdt: Big News For a Pair of B1G Teams Tomorrow
I hope he stays at PSU. Can't stand U$C.
Is it really hard to type S? Using $ for our rivals isn't funny, it's not original, and it's on the level of RCMB and Bucknuts typing scUM. This isn't MLive
Pretty sure he is referring to people using the dollar sign for OSU, not USC. He's saying it isnt funny when people on here use it on Ohio State, and it isn't funny when people use it for Southern Cal.
And no, it isn't funny. It's WAY over used, and uncreative.
FWIW, "he" is actually a she. Just saying.
And you're not my Dad. Using Ohio is also unoriginal, yet it is used all the time without apology.
Screw you and your ego for thinking I care what you think, Mr. Pissy Pants. That comment is nothing like MLive.
"Ohio" is not an insult. It's what that school calls itself in all of its cheers/band formations, etc.
Conversely, I have never seen USC refer to itself as "U$C" in any kind of a cheer.
Ok...you win the pissing match. Congratulations.
Glad my little $ could help you boys out.
is a good screen name
Thats the nicest thing anyone's said to me all day.
No U$C, M$U, or MT$U.
It's just a rule.
What about $MU?
If in reference to the Pony Express/CJK5H days... sure, what the hell. Go nuts.
love it :)
Yep. "OHIO" Stadium, Script "OHIO", the crowd screams "OH - IO", and I'm pretty sure that thing they do where four people spell out a name...I think it spells "OHIO" but I'll have to double check.
Tell me again why Ohio fans are angry we call them "OHIO"?
Alma mater is "Carmen Ohio"
They even call themselves Ohio State.
Oh . . . wait.
Fight the team across the field
Show them Ohio's here
(We've got the team why don't we)
Set the Earth reverberating
With a mighty cheer
RAH! RAH! RAH!
Hit them hard and see how they fall
Never let that team get the ball
Hail! Hail! The gang's all here
So let's win that old conference now!
(So let's beat that Michigan now!)
(Oh, Ohio! Oh, Ohio! Wahoo! Wahoo for Ohio!)
That fight song is awful.
I like it. And I like MSU's and Notre Dame's too. All are classic College fight songs. Just because they are rivals does not mean that you can't give credit where it is due.
USC's (or should i say U$C? lol) has the best in CFB
Whateva! I do what I want! snaps fingers.
Also, it is very MLive, and used to be grounds for an exile to oblivion per the words of Brian. I think he might be kind of a big shot on this here blog.
from his FAQ http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/mgoboard-faq
How can I avoid downvotes?
Don't be redundant. Don't use stupid nicknames like O$U. Spell things correctly. Don't post useless replies like "I agree" and whatnot.
Your response clearly indicates that you do care what he thinks. /confused
Given that USC hardly considers itself our rival, it's more on par with Illinois fans calling us "scUM."
Maybe rival wasn't the best word, but we do have somewhat of a rivalry with them. Maybe it's not on the ND/OSU/MSU level, but we go head to head with them for recruits, we both up there in terms of College Football Royalty, and we've played them enough that it's not just some random bowl matchup
I'd say that there's a rivalry between OSU, UM, seperately and USC. The Rose Bowl implications are strongest with the B1G blue bloods, and the best traditional power in the PAC 10, to the point where any time the teams recruit head to head AND have a chance of playing each other annually, there exists a rivalry.
We have to beat USC before its a rivalry.
I am rooting for a starting RB to stay at a rival. You missed the theme of the post when you called me out for being disrespectful to rivals. I dont really consider USC to be a rival. They just piss me off because their fan base is annoying, and they get away with a lot of shit.
I'd love to see Redd stick it out with his teammates. Those who do stay will build their own personal character and hopefully be able to hold their heads up as they can rebuild pride in their program....I'm probably being Pollyanna, but that's what I hope for them.
I'm guessing you probably don't remember us consistently getting crushed by USC in the Rose Bowl. I'm guessing the same goes for all those people who are hoping Redd goes to USC. Why would you want Redd to go to USC, when there is a slight chance we play USC this year, and zero chance we play PSU?
Sure they beat michigan on the field but because you use the $ instead of the s it erases any memory of defeat.
How is it any different than the RCMB ANC scUM?
Will still beat PSU, just like we usually do.
You have no faith?
Maybe next year, but we don't play Penn State this year.
Pair of B1G schools... Last I checked USC wasn't in the B1G
If he decided to stay, that would be good news for Penn State, a Big Ten school, no?
I heard that too. I hope he stays at PSU. Can't stand USC.
wow. Finally felt the wrath of a bunch of over zealous ego maniacs on a message board who take themselves too seriously. Now I know.
Just so we're clear about this I have no issue with you using the $ in USC. I'm an SC grad. I think it's pretty trite and childish, but I don't care. I would rather Redd end up at SC and not stay at PSU for purely selfish reasons.
However, you probably shouldn't play the martyr role when in the MGoBoard FAQ Brian specifically says not to use "stupid nicknames like O$U." Message boards by their nature can devolve into a cess pit pretty quickly so by self policing things like this MGoBoard actually remains fun to read and a place for people to come without feeling like they are dealing with a bunch of hateful, ignorant 12 year olds.
If you are an M fan who happens to enjoy such a den of iniquity though I submit for your approval http://www.mlive.com/
I feel like it has nothing to do with Michigan. Green and 'Treadwell are still taking visits I thought and McQuay I think is delaying his decision, even though we were out of it as of recently.
Coach Urbs and his shenanigans. Probably flipped a couple of poor souls
I immediately thought a transfer from PSU to another B1G school until he said good news.
Umm, why would it have anything to do with that? The NCAA hasn't ever gone back on punishments like that (that I know of), and certainly they would have no reason to do it now.
I haven't heard of any appeals either.
He's just tweeted again and said that the news has to do with recruiting. Given that he has described the news as being: (a) good; (b) big; and (c) about recruiting, it's not a stretch to think that Michigan is one of the teams that could be involved.
While Green, McQuay and Treadwell don't seem to be imminent, it could be a 2014 guy like Ferns.
I'm calling it right now, we get McQuay. He's been told that if he commits to us he has to do it soon, and since that he's been going back and forth on making a quick decision. I think that's more than coincedence. I think he's given it a bit more thought, decided he wants to go to Michigan, and therefore decided to commit tomorrow (as he's been pushed to make a quick decision). I could also see a guy like Ferns, but that's my guess.
ok, I'm not saying I would rather have mcquay over any of our other db recruits, but when a team has a large haul at 1 position, it seems like one of the lower rated guys sees the writing on the wall and decommits. Do you think that since we already have 4 cbs in the class that somebody might feel like he should look elsewhere for a team that doesnt have as many recuits at the same position as him. Unless were looking at mcquay at safety or one of our other cbs as a safety, i havent been following them that closely. I just really like our class and dont want to see anybody leave. Also, anybody see that 247 updated they ranking system? I like it.
1) If it doesn’t have to do with a B1G team gaining, WITHOUT a loss to another B1G than it isn’t “good” news (for everyone), and
2) If it doesn’t involve a highly desirous recruit (4* or greater), and preferably going to one of the higher tier competitive teams (M, OH, PSU, MSU, NE, WI, IA, PU) then it really isn’t “big”
Well, if it is recruiting, I would imagine it would have to do with at least one of the Big 2, as those appear to be the only schools that have great chances with any bigtime prospects.
It's getting time for NCAA to rule on his eligibility. Could be that.
it is not related to MIchigan per Josh
I'm not seeing anything on his feed that says UM isn't involved.
He said it on the Rivals paid board
Where does he say it's not Michigan? Not in his tweets.
If a thread could lose the internets this one would be a serious candidate.
That would have to do with USC...not the B10.
That wouldn't be GOOD news for the B10...
that tweet has an 83% chance of having nothing to do with Michigan. Even if it happens to be about Michigan, I bet Hemboldt will tweet actual information worth bringing to the board instead of this worthless meta-tweet.
it has an 8.3% chance of being Michigan. But there are two teams, so its technically a 16.6% chance
Actually, if we know for a fact that it's two different teams, there's a 17.42% (1/12 + 1/11) chance one of them is Michigan. Except evidently it's been leaked that it has nothing to do with Michigan, so probability has nothing to do with it any more.
are mathematically correct, however they ignore the fact that there is essentially no possible chance that there is big news relating to Indiana, Purdue, Minnesota or Northwestern. You need to figure out a way to factor that in somehow.
Your calculated odds are close, but only by coincidence, as the methodology is incorrect. You can see this by using your method to calculate the odds of Michigan being mentioned if there were 8 unknown b1g teams with good news (your calculation would show 100%+ odds).
The correct calculation: 1 - (11/12 * 10/11) = 1/6 or 16.67%
Or 1 minus the probability that um is not mentioned.
Ah right i forgot all about calculating probablity. Slept through my Stats class lol
Not sure how to embed tweets. The last one seemed kind of like a cop out way of saying yes. I know MSU is expecting a commit soon from Demetrius Cooper or maybe Zach Bradshaw flips.
I don't think either one of those two would qualify as BIG news no matter who they committed to.
Probably not Bradshaw, as that would be BAD news for one big ten team (penn state). Cooper will be a 4 star according to analysts whether he goes to MSU or ND, so it's pretty big.
What's up with all this recruting hyperventilation? (F5, F5)? I love the class that Hoke is putting together (F5), but when, and if, and of them play as freshman, the sense of euphoria is going to be replaced by the realization that they play like Freshman (F5). How many Freshman have come in and light it up?
- Rick Leach
- Anthony Carter
- Chan Henne/Mike Hart
- Charles Woodson
and probably a few others. This is out of, what, 800+ freshman who came in since 1975. (5? F5!) We would do well to remember that for every great play a rookie makes, you will see 10 instances of missed reads and confusion.
Of all the players who have lit it up at Michigan since 1975, how many were not part of a recruiting class? I can only think of Jordan Kovacs, but there are probably several more. I don't see why our excitement at landing recruits should be based on what's expected of them as freshmen.
Just popped out another one. With the other 10 or 12 between the two at IU and this one, the Hoosiers are set for another two decades!
If big news were coming for Michigan, I feel like we would have heard it first from Sam Webb or TomVH. Helmholdt isn't exactly on the cutting edge anymore (if he ever was) when it comes to breaking Michigan news...
It's not a swipe when it's the truth.
While simultaneously bashing Tremendous at any chance you get. And I'm not the first to defend Tremendous either (I think some of his recruiting info is nice, beyond that I don't use him for much), but your insistance on supporting a paid recruiting site to the point of saying "no need to take a swipe at Helmholdt" for something that seems pretty valid while taking pot shots every chance you get at Tremendous is getting old. It's cool to have your opinion, but you're going about it a very odd and mostly irritating way.
Rager is Timmy S!
Come on. The guy's name is Steve Lorenz.
And if you notice, I said, "If this were about Michigan," which means that it's not about Michigan.
Thanks for trying to put me in my place, but you failed.
Let me guess, your buddies did not die face-down in the muck so this fucking strumpet could run all over this board backtracking?
I'm not claiming to know the story. I'm claiming that we would likely have heard it elsewhere first if it were about Michigan, not from Josh Helmholdt.
I'll believe it when I hear it.....
How is Redd transferring to USC good news for PSU?
Is going to finally lift Spartys BCS Bowl ban. It's a shame that this ban was present during their 11-1 season.
I'm putting my money on Chance Stewart committing to Wisconsin today.
Not a bad guess at all.
Wow. The desparation for real football news has reached its climax.
To summarize: There's a 1 in 12 chance this vague tweet has anything to do with us.......yet it's thread worthy?
1/6 chance.. Which is enough for my football fix to F5 it
1 in 6? Both bits of good news are not for the same team. Therefore, 2 teams of the 12 will get good news. We are 1 of the 12, therefiore we have a 1 in 12 chance.
That said, I KNEW someone was going to debate me on the odds. I should have gone with my instincts and inserted a caveat in my original post.
1 in 6? Both bits of good news are not for the same team. Therefore, 2 teams of the 12 will get good news. We are 1 of the 12, therefiore we have a 1 in 12 chance.
Using this logic, if 12 teams were going to get good news, Michigan's shot is still 1 in 12? 1 in 6 is the correct number.
One week until practice. One week until practice. One week until practice.
Has it been a week yet?
I know BISB. I keep searching the house hopin' for a pair of "ruby slippers" to make it happen.
Isn't it 1 in 6?
Maybe Big Ten fans should stop feeding Josh's ego and just say, "Okay, we'll see tomorrow."
Sounds like a good plan. I’m in.
FWIW, a caller to Webb's Recruiting Roundup segment this morning specifically referenced Helmholdt's assertion and asked Sam if he knew of any big recruiting developments that would be breaking today. Webb said he didn't know of anything like that at the moment.
My guess, Greg Bryant de-commits to Oklahoma after visiting Auburn. It seems to be a 2 horse race for Green with Michigan and Auburn as the front runners. Bryant is thought to be a strong lean to Auburn now and Green is committing to Michigan. The other team is Wisconsin that will get a commitment from Chance Stewart.
Or...It's all just B.S.
You clearly haven't read much of this thread.
Helmholdt said it didn't have anything to do with Michigan.
well I did not see such a post on "Rivals Paid Board" That is in fact information that I have not found anywhere on their board. Still, I really don't think it's true since obviously a Michigan Insider would have that info first. I guess i needed the little /s. One can dream...
Actually, you are better off if you take the “It’s all just B.S.” route, as it is just that.
I think it's already big news that at least a few significant players have not left PSU.
I hate USC, but Redd would be crazy to take a pass on that opportunity.
He could be the next OJ or Reggie.......
or he could be Herschel Dennis.
It is a pretty late switch, and for only one year. I could see this from a underclassman who would have time to learn a new system well enough to thrive. If he leaves and perfoms poorly, I think he hurts his stock more.
I was going back and forth on what I think is the better move for his pro chances.
USC will be a better football team, will have better National Coverage and has a huge reputation for having first round draft picks.
But on the other hand, 'SC will be a one year "gun for hire" situation. He won't be comfortable there, he may not get the starting nod (or may split carries). He will have to learn a new system (but then again there is a new PSU head coach too, so a new-ish system there as well).
I think my opinion is: if he is comfortable at PSU- likes his living situation, friends, teammates, etc- he should stay there. It is easier to play your best when you are comfortable. But, if he thinks the negative news coverage is going to make it difficult to play well he should go. (I think he is going to 'SC FWIW)
Silas- You are welcome for the advice.
when we were both good at the same time. I do remember beating some good Washington teams in the Rose Bowl when USC wasn't good enough to win the Pac Ten. Frankly you have to say that team has had our number when we meet head to head.
Ron Simpkins does not approve of this post...Charles White thinks it's dandy though...
No news is good news
I predict there will be big news for a B1G team tomorrow.
Be still my heart.
Not exactly news worthy of such a stir in the internets,
I'm not sure if it caused a huge stir on the internet in general.
While MGoBlog is part of the internet, we also somewhat overreacted to this news with a ~125 post thread thus far, since the original Tweet had nothing to do with Michigan.
...while 25 of those posts were from you
A quick scroll up the thread shows 4 posts for me.
And I never overreacted to the news, since I entered the fray by saying (in summary) "This probably isn't about Michigan since it's not coming from Sam Webb or TomVH." Of course, several other posters had the same notion, so I wasn't the only one. But still.
you are still here reading it...just saying...
I also knew this had nothing to do with Michigan and made an obvious reach of a statement. You had to put your two cents in about a sarcastic remark.
