Josh Furman, Richard Ash, and Thomas Rawls granted releases

Submitted by Leaders And Best on

Not a huge surprise as Richard Ash and Josh Furman were both redshirt juniors. Hopefully they both get their degrees this spring and find a place to play next year like Michael Cox.

Josh Furman is a great example of why not to get too excited about recruiting or any recruit. An average 3 star recruit who seemed like an under the radar prospect with 4.35 speed.  Was a guy with the size and athletism to be a big time performer.  Generated a fair amount of excitement on the board but hardly even saw the field.

Hope he and the others got there degrees and find greener pastures elsewhere.

According to Rivals, Furman was 3-star but Ash was 4-star.

Regardless, your point is a good one—if you tried to make a living betting on which HS recruits were going to be difference-makers, you'd probably end up in the poorhouse pretty quickly.

Does anyone know if and when the coaching staff does an individual evaluation on all returning players? Do they sit down with each player ? An assessment that let's them know where they are in the pecking order, what they need to do to play or if they will likely see any playing time ? Seems like a no brainer , but don't know the process . Assuming these guys were probably told little to no playing time and primarily scout team status. These guys could play in many programs .

That 2010 class gave UM Devin Gardner.  After that, here are the Scout 4 stars that were brought in.

Cullen Christian, Josh Furman, Austin White, Jibreel Black, Marvin Robinson, Demar Dorsey, Ricardo Miller, Jerald Robinson.

WHAT?!

Drew Dileo was nothing special.  Jake Ryan is.

And the 2011 class isn't much better.  Geez Louise.

How low have the expectations fallen?!

As a football player, Drew Dileo was and is nothing special.  He was an undersized, slow, WR who came to UM at a time when that skillset was enough to get on the field due to injury and lack of depth at the position.  He made an incredible, "headsy" play at Northwestern, had the big game and last catch to set up the win over MSU in '12, but sheesh.  He got all the hype for his "hands" and I think we all remember the 4th down pass that went right through them against Nebraska.  What exactly is special about a 5'9 guy who if hell froze over and received an invite to the Combine in Indy would run in the 4.6-4.7 range?  By all accounts he's a great guy, great teammate, hard worker, etc.

I don't want to bash the kid, but come on, as a WR, he is and was nothing special.

Dileo was a great all-around player. He could do a little bit of everything. I think it's rare that you find someone who can do the various things he has done (hold, return, catch the ball, run fake field goals, etc.), but you're right that he's not a great athlete by "measurable" standards.

The 3 stars in Florida smoke 4 stars from the North and NJ 99% of the time. When will we learn? Why all of the Cass Tech and NJ players? I am tired of losing.

Ash seemed like he was just on the roster and Furman was a disaster waiting to happen every time he saw the field. Rawls got squeezed out by more talented players. Too bad things didn't go as planned for the kids.

Always sad to see people leave the program, but as others have said, at least Ash and Furman were redshirt juniors so hopefully they get their degrees this spring and find a place not only to play but further their education. I had thought Rawls' eligibility was simply junior, but if he finished as well, then that's great and we have given the world three more Michigan graduates. Best of luck to all three of them in their future.

I was really excited about Rawls when he came in and ten after those few long runs he had two years ago. I really think he'll do big things with more carries in the MAC.

Not that Furman was a great player but wow that safety spot is getting scary.  Have to wrap Wilson in bubble wrap and them you are looking at a whole bunch of other guys who have either zero or little playing experience.   I know Countess and Taylor are undersized but one still wonders if one of them will be slated to move there simply from an experience standpoint.

I know that's harsh, and I really wish him all the best...I hope he can land on his feet and play one year of quality ball. I'd recommend he go to Towson, they're coming off a national championship appearance and it's close to home.

I always thought from day 1 he was best bulking up and playing WLB.

Anyway, I don't think this changes a thing at safety. I think he was the 3rd option at SS going into next season behind Dymonte Thomas (starter) and Delano Hill (backup).

FS
1. Wilson
2. Clark

SS
1. Thomas
2. Hill

Ash is the only one that could've plays meaningful snaps IMO.

Good luck to the guys.

-Ash always seems to me to be carrying a lot of bad pounds.

-Furman seemed like a good kid that never blossomed.

-Rawls I think was the kid that took the ACT several times to get enrolled. Congrats to him for getting his degree and good luck at CMU. .
