Jordan Payton top 2
now where the hell is Countdown to Kickoff?!
Today's CTK will be posted tomorrow morning, per mgoblue.com
would be a huge pickup
yes, he would be a huge pickup...plus he plays wr which is a position we should fill
He told me that Penn State is in there too, but ya know, the third team in a top two probably isn't in great shape.
I know there have been rumors about Cal, but don't discount Michigan here.
Is he still visiting for the ND game?
Not too cryptic though, I just think Michigan has a chance. He told me a few things off the record so we'll see.
He is still planning to visit for the ND game.
Can you tell us "off the record"?
aaamichfan, should you change your name to aa+michfan? just an OT thought.
...should be avoided here.
Even in jokes.
That's cause for a downgrade... I mean a downvote.
That's a paddlin'.
As usual, Jasper agrees.
Turns out my click rate wasn't sustainable in the long run.
That's what she said!
His comment was clearly an economic joke, not political. He said nothing of why the rating went from AAA to AA+
Oh come on, it was funny.
Anyone who would get offended about a joke like that is just being ridiculously oversensitive.
Sorry, couldn't resist
Payton hasn't visited, has he? Any idea if he has a visit planned?
Notre Dame game.
In that case, I rate our chances with Mr. Payton as very, very good.
I'm guessing he is headed to Cal as well. If so, I don't see it as a huge loss because I think he is a bit over hyped and we are in on plenty of solid wideouts.
Refresh my memory - was he a USC commit? The WR I am remembering is pretty darn good and would fit into our system really well . . . .
Yes, he decommitted a couple months ago.
Yes, he is the man you speak of. He would be a great fit and could possibly compete for the starting job his second year on campus.
A 2012 receiver has a chance to get a lot of reps his first year, too. Our depth chart is Roundtree and Stonum, if he works out. Then we'd have guys like Stokes, Jackson, Dileo, etc who haven't really panned out yet. Hopefully one or more of those guys steps up this year so we don't have too much of a drop off at WR
I agree with except, slightly, on the question of Dileo. That boy had very promising flashes last year. The ceiling, I don't know, but I have a hard time thinking he won't be an asset down the road. The rest, as you say, are very untested.
Meh. Lived in San Fran and the college football following was piss poor. Berkley is Ok but not great. How could he visit for Under the Lights Game and not be impressed?
And their coaching situation is iffy at best.
And you're totally right. Also, Cal. is renovating its stadium this year and all home games will be played at AT&T Park in SF (where the Giants play; wonderful stad\ium for baseball, not football). So, when he visits Cal, it won't be for an on-campus game. Even if it was on-campus, the football atmosphere doesn't compare to A2. That being said, Cal's a great school, with a beautiful campus.
Cal-Berkeley is almost the equivalent of Michigan academic-wise. I'd say this kid Payton made a pretty big leap going from USC to either Cal or Michigan. Seems like a pretty smart kid to me.
True statement about being wowed during his visit though. Its going to blow his mind.
I think he was referring to Cal as a football program, not as a whole.
I don't know about that. Cal has been ranked above Michigan for a while, but I consider the top public colleges pretty much on the same level (Michigan, Berkeley, UCLA, Virginia with UNC lagging a little behind).
I see this more as closer to home and program uncertainty vs a more stable program.
Cal hasn't done anything since the 12-1 season in 2003 with Aaron Rodgers at QB and the epic upset of USC. How Tedford and crew has recruited so well the last few years has baffled me. Cal has been a non-player in the PAC-10 for years; I guess I'll never understand recruiting.
Kinda strange since they've been bringing in solid talent for a while now. It's time for them to put up and shut up. I really don't see how Jordan can choose Cal over MI other than the proximity to home factor. I'll be happy as heck if we land this kid but I really want Madaris too, the guy seems to make plays after the catch. Plus, I'd love to see another Spartan meltdown...If the coaches want 2 receivers, I just don't see Obrien being a part of the class. Assuming we snag Dunn of course. Hey, until I see evidence to the contrary I'm including Dunn. Oh wait, he is still committed to them who shall not be named ;)
The upset of USC was 2003, but the one loss season was 2004. They also shared the conference championship (with USC) in 2006.
Texas campaigned their way into a Rose Bowl slot that ended up as an exciting loss while Cal got trucked in their Noel game....I know I would have rather played them than Vince Young.
I agree. And further, I am shocked, shocked! to find out that UTexas would use influence to get their way.
Berkeley is kind of a nice place to live and go to school, much nicer than West Texas.
Nice campus, great school, California girls and weather not to mention how many D1 college football players the state produces.
California is one of the big football talent states - partly due to sheer size. And Cal as a university has a strong reputation in the state (I know this having lived out there for a while). I know our facilities blow them away, but proximity to the recruiting hotbeds out there probably help them a lot.
If it's between us and Cal and he visits for the ND game he will choose us. Mark my drunken words.
A 6'2" 4 star receiver? Yes please.
Hmmmm.... beautiful area to live in while in school? Check.
Wonderful climate? Check.
Degree from a university widely regarded as one of the best in the country? Check.
For west coast kids who've never been to the Midwest and didn't grow up thinking that Michigan was the end all and be all of college football, this might be enough to lure them to Berkeley.
I agree. While going to Michigan on a football scholly would be a dream for a lot of us, it might not be the end all for Payton. Hopefully he would love a degree from Michigan and to play football there however if he decides to go to Cal why should we be surprised?
It reminds me of Buckeye fans on Bucknuts that were blasting Kalis and saying "how could you not want to play football for ###?"
chose Michigan over USC the same season Rojo went out West.
Having lived in the bay area from 83 to 88 i can you the reason property values are sky-high in cali while remaining not so much here in the midwest is because lots and lots of people want to live there. You know.....people who like climate...views...nightlife....culture....etc.
Pretty sure Morgn is one of those people things.
There's more to life than football? Are you sure?
I hate to be the downer, but IMO...it's
If we pull it off, IMO it'll be a Donovan Warren type steal, something late in the game. Either that or Cal fires Tedford.
I don't think it's just his opinion. Just about every post I've read about Payton, many on this here blog, suggest he's going to Cal. He's been reportedly recruiting other players to go with him to Cal, including mega-safety Shaq Thompson.
Obviously Tom knows something, and if he visits there's always a chance, but I think it's safe to call this one a long shot.
If the staff can get him on campus, this could go very well for Michigan
California has long been a pipeline for Michigan football.
Would be great to get another Cal kid into this recruiting class. Especially in a position of need (WR). And even if he doesn't Go Blue, being in his Top 2 broadens our appeal to younger California players who may pursue in the coming years.
Now we just need to get back to the Rosebowl (and kick some Pac-10 ass) in order to further broaden that appeal.
This would be awesome for UM on 2 levels.
1) Jordan is sick, he is the real deal. I have seen him play amongst the top competition in CA. I will take him any day over Burbridge, Madaris, Darboh. He set records as a freshman and is ine of the most sought after WR in CA. BTW he has been a big fan of UM for a long time. I think we have a legitimate shot with him.
2) Oaks Christian is a powerhouse for California High School football. They have been a big contributer to USC, Oregon, Notre Dame among others. Bill Redell runs an amazing program and attracts the best if the best. His staff includes Clay Matthews, Casey Clausen and many others with big time college and pro experience. Getting our foot in the door with this program would be huge. If Jordan chooses UM, he would be their first football player from Oaks to attend UM.
I've shared this before, but this is the guy that pointed at me in my Michigan hat after scoring a toughdown in a California 7 on 7 tournament and said, "Go Blue."
I guess I don't see how somebody in their right mind could pick Cal over Michigan, given the monstrous offensive line and 5 star pocket passing QB we have coming in. It is going to be a true aerial assault in 3-4 years and this guy would be the first elite WR in the door.
It should never surprise someone when an elite CA player doesn't come to Michigan. It's just a different world out there. Even if every PAC-12 team was horrible, due to distance and culture, the kids there would still grow up watching PAC-12 games. And it's hard to expect a kid to go so very far from home. It sure happens. I would love it to happen again. It's just a lot to expect. I adhere to the rule "if they visit, then consider their interest to be genuine." Until then, best not to expect much.
The kid has probably never felt so much as 40 degree weather living in southern california. I am pretty surprised he's not looking to go to Stanford. It's obvious that academics are important to him, and Stanford is light years ahead of Berkeley in both academics and football.
I would not say that Stanford is ahead of Cal in football. They had a very good season last year, but their hot-shot coach that got them there left. They should be good this season, but their star QB will be gone after this season.
Over the last 2 years, Stanford has been better, but over the last 10+, Cal has been much better, and even recently Cal has recruited better and they have the better coach. Once Luck leaves, Cal will be back to being the top team in the Bay Area.
just reported on Twitter that Michigan leads for Payton
"Michigan is up there. So far, they are my favorite. I'd say Michigan is 1 and Cal is probably 2," Payton said. "I like everything about [Michigan]. I like the school, I like the coaches… I like all that stuff."
