Jordan Morgan Named to NABC Good Works Team

Submitted by Raoul on

Congrats to Jordan Morgan for being one of ten men's college basketball players named to the Allstate NABC Good Works Team.

University of Michigan men's basketball graduate student Jordan Morgan (Detroit, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) is one of 10 men's college basketball student-athletes named the Allstate NABC Good Works Team, as announced by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), today (Tuesday, Feb. 11).

In its second year, this preeminent community service honor recognizes college basketball players who have made a commitment to improving their communities and the lives of others. A total of 117 nominations were submitted and then voted on by a panel comprised of former coaches, student-athletes and media members, including former Duke University student-athlete, two-time NCAA champion and seven-time NBA All-Star Grant Hill. The team is comprised of 10 student-athletes; five from the NCAA Division I and five from NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA.

In addition to Morgan's contributions to the Michigan basketball program over the past four-plus years, he has also shown the ability to excel in the classroom while giving back to others.

Morgan has worked with Mott's "From the Heart" Program, spoke for Wines Elementary Run-a-thon on the importance of fitness, visited Joshua's Lemonade stand in Detroit, worked clinics for high school boys, high school girls and coaches in Ivory Coast, visited an orphanage in Ivory Coast, spoke at Brighton Community Bible Church youth group on faith, spoke at Huron Hills Church on faith in sports and life, currently works with Big Brothers Big Sisters to promote education and helps with Meals on Wheels delivering lunches to the community.

The term may be over used but Jordan Morgan is a wonderful representative of this great University. I am very glad that he chose to stay and complete his career as a Michigan Wolverine! Congrats to Jordan as this is well deserved

And he has a chance at the Michigan record for most games played. He's played in 128 career games, with the record of 136 held by Stu Douglass.

Also found this in the game notes, which fits in with his Good Works Award:

Aspires to play professional basketball and, following his career, return to Michigan and open his own business to help the city of Detroit.

With all of the crap you hear out there about recruits and players from our own Mr Gibbons to the fellas at the MSU penitentiary, it's great to read a story like this.  A kid who doesn't take his scholarship and a chance a free education to a premiere college for granted.  And if that's not enough he also gives back to the community and wants to continue to do so in a city that needs it the most.  And when that kid is in beast mode watch the f#$k out!

Thanks for posting this. I'm glad to hear about what Morgan is doing and has already done.

Coach Jeff Meyers is in the picture to the right, and is a man whose faith life and integrity are very important to him. It isn't surprising to see him in the photo Because of the blog rules on religion, it isn't PC or wise to go too far down that road. However, as I think back to Burke's Bible tattoo, and Morgan winning this award, and Coach Meyer, and all the character accolades for Coach Beilein, it isn't hard to see the character present on the team.

The spiritual and character tenor of a team does not correlate directly to success on the floor. You still have to have the right players to win. Having said that, I can easily believe that like attracts like, and that there are a number of excellent basketball players and coaches who would prefer to be in an environment like the one fostered by Beilein at Michigan.

One thing I particularly like is that no one, not Morgan, not Meyer, not Burke, not Beilein, is "in your face" about these kinds of things. I suspect they are all happy to be very low key and to present themselves in a spirit of humility. Refreshing indeed.

have zero to do with being PC--your post only reinforces the wisdom of it.  This is not a religion site.  Morgan's involvement with his religion was an incidental part of the story--but one appropriately included.  You have chosen to take it in an inappropriate direction IMHO--a direction that not everyone here would necessarily share.  Which will inevitably lead to......

Great post and a great young man. Jordan Morgan has handled everything he does quietly and with class. He is a great representative of what a Michigan student athlete should look like. I also agree that Coach Beilein has brought honor to this team; from the players he recruits, to the coaches he surrounds himself with.

To be honest, I used to think Tom Izzo was a great coach and really respected what he did. That all changed when Coach Beilein entered the picture. Izzo is still a good coach, but I would want my three boys playing for Michigan because of Coach Beilein. Watching the game this year only solidified why I like our coach better.

Not to thread jack, but is Coach Beilein one of the the greatest hires and best fit at MIchigan?(Besides Bo obviously.)

impressive resume for a full time student, not to mention full time athlete. In preseason interviews he talked about the emotions he went through (going from starter to bench) and how he decided to come back and do everything possible to help his team, regardless of minutes. I have enormous amount of respect for him.
