Jordan " No Fly Zone" Kovacs? Absolutely thrilled, can't help but love the kid.

Yup yup. His instincts are about as good as it gets.

It's pretty damn funny reading all of these blogs and hearing how one game against Western Michigan has changed their opinion. The kid has always had a nose for the ball. That's a fact. It really blows my mind why he's been so hated. He's been one of the only bright spots on defense besides Mike Martin for sometime.
September 4th, 2011 at 9:45 AM ^
I'm not sure i've ever read a comment from anyone who hated Kovacs. IMO he was the best defensive player on the field last year when Martin went down, but it's amazing to see how great he is when he's used correctly.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:06 AM ^
It's not necessary that there's hate, but it just seems like people are all pining for him to be replaced because "we shouldn't have walkons on the field."

Kovacs was injured in high school and, as I think he put it, "made the mistake" of telling the coaches so (and that he'd had surgery?), so he didn't make the team his freshman year. Eventually he got healthy. VERY healthy, from the looks of it.
Similarly for the Brink panic: He was a basketball player and didn't even play football until mid-way through high school. So both are guys who weren't getting recruiting attention and needed some time to catch up. But they both have the "I'll show you" attitude and work ethic that makes up for any possible physical limitations. Lots of examples from the NFL of players being passed on because their combine numbers aren't as spectacular as others' only to prove that speed, weight and arm length aren't everything.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:22 AM ^
The WMU game didn't change my opinion of him at all. He's still what he's always been. But now at least he has a coordinator who doesn't mind sending him on a blitz a few times a game.

The first two have "Who owns who now?" written all over them.

What happened to chin straps that modern day helmets do not stay on players’ heads? I feel that both college and pro players should receive a penalty if their helmet comes off. It is a dangerous epidemic and seems to me happens today in one game about as many times as it used to happen in a whole season.
September 4th, 2011 at 8:25 AM ^
Helmets come off, it's what they do.
September 4th, 2011 at 9:57 AM ^
My point is helmets did not used to come off like they do today. Either something is wrong with how chin straps are being used or my perception is wrong.

Players are stronger and faster these days. They hit harder and therefore helmets are seperated from head. In 20 years players will be hitting even harder and the head will also come off with the helmet. True Story : /

Check out the hair on the guys who have their helmets coming off. I imagine the helmet can't be that tight when there is that much hair.
September 4th, 2011 at 12:13 PM ^
I'm going with the fact that they do not strap their helmets up at all which causes them to be knocked off so easy.
September 4th, 2011 at 8:45 AM ^
If there is enough of an impact to cause the helmet to come off imagine the damage to the head and neck if it couldn't come off.

Thank you for this explanation, makes sense.

Some respect for this kid. Look, he's a good football player. He's not the fastest guy out there but he can play the game, period.
Hopefully now people won't be all "OMG WALK ON" whenever his name is brought up. That got old 2 years ago.
September 4th, 2011 at 8:40 AM ^
I can understand the worries over his lack of speed, esp. given the weakness of the whole secondary. Even so, though, you're right on - he was one of our best tacklers the last couple years, and it's great to see him get the respect he has earned for himself.

Don't forget MANBALL. This team does not play MANBALL. West Coast Offense is not MANBALL.

In the first picture it looks like an iron fist coming from the top, it seems appropriate
September 4th, 2011 at 8:05 AM ^
My #32 jersey is looking a lot more attractive right about. Those were some big hits...and a nice pass deflection too!
September 4th, 2011 at 10:59 AM ^
Talk about being in the zone, he had a huge 3rd quarter. He proved he can not only play up near the LOS, but can provide competent drop back coverage as well.
September 4th, 2011 at 8:35 AM ^
Other guys played well, also...
Jake Ryan, Courtney Avery, J.T. Floyd, Mike Martin, Herron obviously, Demons.....
Tousaint, Shaw, Molk, Hemingway, the list goes on.
Denard with no turnovers,
Koger took a head shot and got right up.
Gibbons! The PAT miss was a breach in the line, not his kick.
September 4th, 2011 at 8:37 AM ^
he played a great game....but it was wmu. hope we can see this against some top flight bcs schools.
September 4th, 2011 at 8:43 AM ^
Nice pictures. Iowa and Wiscy always find ways of turning walk-ons into defensive stars - maybe Kouvacs will be that guy for UM. Looked like a beast yesterday, and has been a good tackler for three years now.
September 4th, 2011 at 8:57 AM ^
I think we finally have coaches that use the talent we have and put those kids in positions to be successful. The scheme, the scheme, the scheme!!
September 4th, 2011 at 9:29 AM ^
"+1" replys, but "The scheme, the scheme, the scheme" is total brilliance. Strong work.

Look at the combination of fear and "WTF just happened?" in Carder's eyes
He was just asking for this after he mouthed off to us.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:09 AM ^
Not sure I believe it yet. Helluva game though.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:23 AM ^
Jordan Kovacs - Stone Cold Killer.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:26 AM ^
The second to last picture with Kovacs walking away while Carder was still on the ground reminds me of the picture of Branch walking away from PSU's QB a couple of years back. Branch's picture was a little more awesome, but these were pretty damn cool.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:36 AM ^
Well, to be honest, Kovac's been my fave player for a couple years, because he is living my dream. Slow white DB wearing the winged helmet, and rocking despite the odds.
However, after watching LSU last night, as much as it pains me, there are guys who are just so much better that there won't be room for him at the top unless he plays like that every game.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:43 AM ^
He stays composed after a big play. Like he's been there before. He doesn't waste a lot of energy celebrating.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:51 AM ^
September 4th, 2011 at 10:58 AM ^
Now that's what I call MAN BALL! Kovacs can bring it! His hits changed the direction of that game. Carder was rattled and lost his composure.
That's a whole different kind of pressure. Go Blue!

After 1 game against a MAC school? I guess Joe Bauserman is headed for AA honors too.
September 4th, 2011 at 12:46 PM ^
He is also a good open field tackler. Bottom line is he is a baller! I hope by the end of the season there is some serious consideration for All-American. Lets just take it one at a time for now though.
Hail!

That is a perfect form tackle. Print it and show it to your kids. That is how we were taught to tackle
