we offered him even though the coaching staff might think it is a risk. they feared he is a two down player, and doesn't have the work ethic to become a three down player. but we need DTs bad, so we offered. he has the talent.

is it UM? We need big DTs looking for early playing time. With no other higher rated DTs looking at us, we needed to offer him. Hopefully, he can develop and improve his conditioning.

At the time of the article, UVA was named as the leader. He'd just taken his official, see. Remains to be seen what'll happen with Groh gone, but it's not like anyone didn't know that was going to happen. Also there's the "school I just visited is my leader" possibility. He wants to major in business and it so happens UVA has an extremely high-ranked business school and a very shiny new building to house it, so I wouldn't count out UVA just because Groh is out.

Teammates with Gholston at Detroit Southeastern. Big, strong kid who came to Michigan's camp and was dominant about half the time.

His problem is his conditioning. He'd wreck shit on first and second down of drills, then be out of gas by third and fourth, and virtually useless.

Coaches waited to offer him, so other programs jumped on (OSU, Florida, etc). Apparently they've monitored him and think he's in shape? So he got offered.

Michigan was always favorite and he probably would have committed earlier if offered.

DT out of Detroit. http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Johnathon-Hanki…

Neither Mich or MSU had offered til now. Great size, mainly too good. Supposedly RR told him to get in better shape and they would offer at the summer camp. After 3 plays he was completely gassed. Some speculated that he was too lazy to get in good enough shape so he wouldn't get an offer. Has some good offers as previously mentioned.

Hopefully, he has started to take conditioning seriously and has improved his physical condition. Would love for him to make an impact on this team. Although, from what I've seen, he is probably in line for a RS no matter where he goes. Love for instate kids to to come to Michigan, so hopefully he is serious about football.

Sometimes I wonder what it's like for a newbie to join this board and see things like:

IIRC, RR blamed LC for a lack of depth. So now RR has to count on EE's and offer JUCO's, and we have no depth at DB. FWIW, it all depends on DWar b/c if he leaves, then we have to put TW at CB and hopefully JT can contribute next year. Does JT play CB or S? No, not that JT - the other JT. Anyway, TJB talked to the NCAA about EE's, and their LOI's can no longer be counted back to the previous year.

Florida, OSU, and Oklahoma only offered him with hopes that it would attract Will Gholston.

Florida and OU are still trying to steal Gholston away from MSU, and they think giving Hankins an offer will help.

I don't think OSU is seriously in on Hankins anymore.

they invited Gholston for this past weekend. He had originally said yes and was scheduled to visit (he even appeared as a visitor on some Gator website) but changed his mind after talking to Mark Dantonio in East Lansing.

Urban Meyer is definitely still recruiting Gholston, and Hankins definitely is being used to attract the real big-time player from that school...

Here are two links (one showing Gholston was expected as a visitor, and one talking about why he didn't visit Florida):

what makes you think he isn't a priority for them? the "big" people on their Rivals board seemed disappointed that he wasn't visiting, so clearly he was at least a target.

Also, OSU all but withdrew their offer to Hankins as soon as Gholston committed to MSU (Tressel is tight with Dantonio). OU isn't really active on Hankins and is still trying to get Gholston to visit...

and Florida... well, Florida thought they were getting Hankins to visit WITH Gholston. All they got was Hankins, and people on THEIR (Florida's) boards made it very clear that that's not who they wanted...

There's a reason most coaches in the Big Ten haven't offered Hankins... dude is of average talent at this level and is in horrible physical shape.

if he commits, he's automatically my favorite recruit in the class. the dude really really really wants to be a wolverine.
