Johnny Dawkins Out at Stanford

Submitted by jimmyshi03 on

So Johnny Dawkins has been let go at Stanford. At Duke, he was chiefly responsible for player development during his tenure as Coach K's lead assisstant.

Even for those of us not on team #FireBeilein, I think there's been a concensus that a staff shakeup may be in order. While former Duke assistants who get let go have in the past run home to mama, this could be an opportunity to bring on someone who has had player development success and has obvious ties to the program, at least in the short term.

I agree...I hope Jordan stays. I hope the entire staff stays with exeption of Alexander who I don't dislike, I just think it would be best to part ways and see him find his way elsewhere so we can get some new life onto the staff. Dawkins would be an interesting fit as an assistant, I'm sure there are other names we should consider as well. I'm most interested in someone who can flat out recruit (within the rules).

Speaking of Aubrey Dawkins he must really be in the doghouse for his defense.  Duncan is shooting like 30% from three over the last 10 games and Dawkins is seeing his minutes decrease rather than increase despite shooting a better percentage.  He is going to need to get some run for us to go far because the way we shot the 3 in the big ten tourney isn't going to get us far if we have any dreams of a magical run in the tourney.

Wouldn't be opposed to a Dawkins/Alexander swap on the coaching staff. I don't think Alexander is a terrible coach, I think we need a new voice.

I take it that Bacari works more with the bigs and Lavall more with the guards.  But since people seem to be upset with the talent on the roster, it feels like we've struck out more with the guards on the recruiting trail. For instance, Trevon Blueitt was in touch Lavall all the time, but we lost him to Xavier.  For me it's harder to figure out responsibilites on the basketball coaching staff than football.

I'd personally prefer to keep Bacari and Lavall on the staff and give them whatever within the rules resources are needed to consistently recruit top 20 classes.

From my understanding, Beilein limits what the coaches can do on the recruiting trail, and they are frustrated with that, and that is why they both might leave. If you look at the bigs we've recruited like Donnal and Doyle, Bacari would rather have recruited other players. That said, I could be way off on this.

A little tangent here, but I find it odd how Aubrey Dawkins seems to have such low bball IQ for having a father who played and coached at a high level.  He has all the physical abilities in the world but he doesn't really seem to "get it".  Heres to hoping the light eventually comes on!
