John Beilein Officially signs highest ranked class since 2012

Submitted by Wolverine In Iowa 68 on

Per MgoBlue.com and Baumgardner (Freep), JB has all the signatures on his highest ranked class since 2012 team.  They are ranked #6 overall and #2 in the B1G (behind only Maryland).  Looks like an impressive bunch of young men.

  • Ignas Brazdeikis, 6-8, forward, Oakville, Ontario (Orangeville Prep) - 4*
  • Colin Castleton, 6-11, center, Daytona Beach, Florida (Father Lopez Catholic HS) - 4*
  • David DeJulius, 6-1, guard, Detroit, Michigan (East English Village HS) - 3*
  • Brandon Johns, 6-8, forward, East Lansing, Michigan (East Lansing HS) - 4*
  • Adrien Nunez, 6-5, guard, Brooklyn, New York (St. Thomas More Prep) - 3*

I guess Beilein can recruit pretty decently after all....

hmmmmm, have I ever had an opinion tearing-down one of our own coaches that I tried to press upon all the members of this board over and over and over again that was routinely disproved on the field of play, and then again in recruiting too? If so, I'd agree to stop presenting my opinions, yes...

While he has definitely done that, his negative rants go to such an extensive length compared to his commendations that I don't believe he should be given this much credit. When is the last time you read a positive board post from Maizen at all (not to mention one of near diary length)? Or how about more than even one small statement/sentence of congratulations/positivity? There's a vast difference between his positive and negative takes.

I don't like calling people out at all, but if you're going to be critical of something or someone, you should at least put as much energy into your applause when the time for that comes. I don't see that from him.

That being said, I can be a very optimistic thinker, so ultra-negative hot takes probably burst my bubble more than the average person. Still, I would like to see Maizen be a bit more receptive and open to the positive things going on with both the football and basketball program. That would be my advice to him.

"Mind boggling that he couldnt deliver better classes"? heh

I dont even like basketball. Be it pro or college. That said, with what has been proven true about how corrupt  recruiting is, short of a couple tourney titles, I dont think you are going to land 5*s on any type of regular basis.

Sort of like looking for that hole in one. Lucky if you get one in a lifetime, unless you have a Nintendo golf game that is.

People wouldn't rag on you if you weren't so adversarial. No one called you pathetic, no one resorted to name-calling in this thread, and yet you immediately start attacking somebody who is poking fun at you. There is a reason why most people don't like the way you post and comment here. You attack the person, not their argument most of the time, and you are constantly negative. Commenters come here for fun banter, positive takes, and speculation. Which is fun for most of us, but you continually ruin it by being aggressive and using weird hashtags like "#rentfree". What does that even mean?

I mean, that 2012 class really didn't pan out at all  /s

In all seriousness, that's awesome! I was reading an article on ESPN today about college basketball's season starting in the shadows of all this corruption, scandal, etc. It's refreshing to have a coach and program that has genuinely risen above all of "that" and still maintain a level of success. Admittedly, I was not a huge fan of the JB hire initially, and I have been critical of him in the past. But, I'm a convert and wish him nothing short of success this season and beyond!

Don't get me wrong - I'm thrilled with this class. But the class ranking is very likely to fall substantially over the coming months. Very few of the top players in the 2018 class have committed as of today, and once the dominos fall, the usual suspects (e.g., Kentucky, Duke, etc.) will be at the top of the rankings. I'd wager Michigan will still be top 10-15 though.

According to the 247 composite, the only team ranked 7-19 with as many as 5 guys is MSU.  They're ranked 10th despite also having 3 4-stars and 2 3-stars (same as us) and they have a higher average ranking than us, per player.  So not really sure how they're behind us but those two classes are very, very close in terms of ranking.

And out of the 12 teams ranked 7-19 with 4 or fewer commits, 9 have a higher average player ratings.

BUT, if you just cut Nunez (who is fairly low rated), the average player rating would go up such that we'd have a nearly identical class to Texas which is sitting at 8th.

So the fifth player isn't providing a bump, and as Geaux_Blue pointed out, many teams behind us have four as well.  Our top four are as good as or better than most teams behind us.

It's a very good class.

I'm looking forward to this year's team, and then how this recruiting class develops.

One thing: can someone at U of M social media *not* poorly Photoshop our recruits heads onto random "Michigan" people's bodies for their "Welcome to Michigan" tweets? This looks stupid and amateur to me.

Brandon Johns had me nervous, given that he's from East Lansing.  I mean, when has Beilein ever gotten a great player who did not get sufficient hometown love from a rival school?

I was curious about how JB was doing recruiting this year and don't really follow the MBB that closely. but your OP was great for folks like me.

JB is just a really good guy and damn good coach.  It's great to log in at 6 forthis class.

Wow! #6 overall? That’s damn impressive. I’m sure the usual suspects of Duke, Kentucky, UNC and Kansas signed a slew of five stars and ended up with a better class, but considering the overall sleaziness of today’s recruiting scene and Beileins’s strict “by the books” policies, it’s amazing that there are some elite basketball schools he must’ve beat out for this ranking. And you know Beilein will coach these guys up into NBA talent.

Hopefully this is a group of guys that can lead Michigan back to the Final Four and get Beilein a national title. Probably no one in the game who deserves a national title more than him.
