John Beilein endorses Brady Hoke, Dave Brandon
“If my sons, right now, were high school football players, I would love for them to play for Brady Hoke and this staff,” he began. “I have watched them and I am convinced and certain that they, every day, have the best intentions and care deeply for their players both on and off the (field).”
Pausing, he moved along to Brandon, his embattled boss. “I know I’m speaking for all the head coaches (at Michigan), as well, and I’m certain of this, as far as their agreement with me on this, is that Dave Brandon has had an incredibly positive impact on this athletic department,” Beilein said. “He has been a great leader and mentor to so many of us in his transition here. I think that’s what's best about what Dave has done, is how he has championed the student-athlete, their experience, and their welfare.”

That's the thing. I don't hate Brady Hoke. I just don't think he's very organized, detail oriented or forward-thinking. Those are three musts for a coach in my book. I don't doubt he's a great guy who loves Michigan. I get that his players love him. But he's not getting the job done.
Brandon is the guy who needs to go. Nobody will stand up to him. Schlissel is new, doesn't like sports and doesn't want to step on toes. Brady would never stand up to the guy that hired him and, moreover, isn't the type of guy to be confrontational like that. Brady Hoke is loyal to a fault, much to his and our program's detriment. Beilein doesn't want to get involved. He wants no drama so he can continue being the best teaching basketball coach on the planet. Nobody knows how the board of regents works, and I'm guesssing that includes the board of regents.

I can't imagine him saying "Hoke sucks and can not develop his talent".
I doubt Beilein wants to be on the record of stirring up the pot.

He has changed a lot of coaches, hasn't he?
IIRC he replaced our formerly successful baseball coach with a so-far meh replacement.

Has Beilein ever said anything bad about a poor basketball coach?
It's one of those things that he can think it, but don't say it. My boss is a jerk, but I can't say that to his face or the media.
October 3rd, 2014 at 8:58 PM ^
Why would Beilein bite the hand that feeds him? To quote Sergeant Barnes, "Stay outta this Elias, this aint yer show."

Granted, it was already posted several times inside already existing threads, so I guess you get a pass.
But non-news is still non-news. What the hell do you expect any M coach to respond with to those questions?

Except he opened with the statements himself. This wasn't a guy giving the "company line" to a reporter's question. This was a well respected, highly successful coach who is not beholden to either of the men he voluntarily and unequivocally supported. The fans don't want him back, but JB clearly does. If there's a man you can take at his word on campus...it is John Beilein.
October 3rd, 2014 at 9:45 PM ^
I'm not saying he's lying.
I'm saying that he's saying exactly what we all would have thought he'd say. Hoke is a great guy. Brandon is his boss. He would never say anything that would hurt either of them. Neither would I nor anyone else in that situation. That's why it's non-news.

.... telling the truth?
He has as much of a right to express his opinions as everyone of the pitchfork toting, mob rule, mass hysteria contibutors that are hoarding this blog -
Give it a rest.
You are all calling out what he has said, as if he is not capable of expressing a positive, first-hand expression of what he feels. So inherently he also is a part of this massive engine that is manipulating him to puppet what his boss is telling him to say.
So he is no better than the rest of them.

I didn't think you were saying JB was lying. You question his motives (saying this because DB is his boss, and Hoke is a great guy). It seems clear to me that JB said what he said because he thinks that DB and Hoke are good for the university, athletic department and football program.
JB clearly stated the other coaches feel the same and I don't think he would say that if he weren't certain in his mind that they did. Bottom line, he sincerely and strongly believes what he said...and I think most UM athletes and coaches agree.
This is news to me because I had no idea what JB really thought of Brandon. At this point, it is more risky to have such unwavering support for DB than to just say nothing, or something like, "I support the AD and all the coaches at UM." He easily could have left it at that.
This went well beyond that, was unsolicited, and left no doubt about where JB stands.

JB's choices weren't 1) say something disparaging or 2) say what he said. He could have said nothing. He could have said something neutral. He could have said something generically positive.
What he said articulated a clear feeling of over the top support for DB and Hoke. So, it did surprise me.

These threads aren't getting ridiculous. OF COURSE he's going to support his boss and co-worker publically. He's not an idiot. Stop pushing good material off the front page with this shit.

Most interesting given he never did the same for RR.
October 3rd, 2014 at 9:15 PM ^
He was probably never asked about RR. Any coach in his right mind knows that you need to give a coach at least 4 years especially if there is an upward trend.
October 3rd, 2014 at 9:20 PM ^
He publicly supported RR before and after he was fired.

More relevantly, he displayed how to do PR, because he is not a moron.
“Believe it or not, it makes me value so much more where I’m coaching because the passion for Michigan athletics is incredible, and people care so deeply about it, that I think you see that,” he said. “That’s where I want to be and we’ve got to take the good with the bad. At the same time, this doesn’t happen at a lot of places. They don’t have the passion.”
Validate your critics beliefs as being genuine and then poliitely disagree. Don't treat us with contempt, which is Brandon's go to method.

It's also possible that Beilein, you know, actually likes those guys. And that's fine. We don't need to dismiss everyone who says positive things about Hoke and DB with an "of course that's what he says publicly." If Beilein wants to endorse Hoke and DB based on what he's seen, he deserves an opportunity to do that without being called a company man or liar. What he says almost certainly won't change my opinion, especially of DB, but Beilein has earned my attention when he speaks.
October 3rd, 2014 at 10:38 PM ^
I am convinced and certain that they, every day, have the best intentions and care deeply for their players both on and off the (field).
Are there really many people out there that sincerely doubt Hoke's good intentions and caring for his players? With the shady stuff going on in a lot of places, knowing that my hypothetical son was actually cared for by a staff would be priority one for me too.
I think that’s what's best about what Dave has done, is how he has championed the student-athlete, their experience, and their welfare.
Are any of the Brandon complaints centered around the student-athlete experience? Everything I can think of is either a PR or fan experience complaint.
October 3rd, 2014 at 10:54 PM ^
Seriously, what else do you expect him to say? Not only would anything less not be appropriate but Beilein is way too naturally classy to say otherwise. He's also probably friends with and respects both Brandon and Hoke. While Brandon is probably somewhat of a jerk, in general he probably gets along fine with Beilein. And Hoke, despite all we've been through, I think is by all accounts a very decent, likable human being. So yeah, that's what JB said.
