John and Jim Harbaugh Golf Story

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

Sam Webb interviewed John Harbaugh on WTKA this morning, in advance of John and Jim being inducted into the Ann Arbor Pioneer Hall of Fame. John shared a Jim story I hadn't heard.

A couple years ago, the brothers were golfing, and after 9 holes, John had beaten Jim. Jim wasn't happy. Their wives hadn't shown up yet, so Jim said, "Let's play a couple more holes." On holes No. 10 and 11, Jim got birdies, while John did not. The birdies gave Jim an 11-hole score that was better than John's 11-hole score, so Jim declared victory.

"I told him, 'no, no, no.' Golf matches are either 9 or 18 holes. There's no such thing as an 11-hole golf match. Jim didn't want to hear that. He wanted to do anything he could to win."

Hockey and basketball are different in this regard, with basketball being much closer to football.  If the shot is off before the buzzer it counts if it goes in.  In hockey, the puck has to be all the way in the goal before the horn.

Regardless, I like football the way it is.  Just because of that play, I wouldn't want it to change.  We wouldn't have won the Northwestern FG game...

after 18 holes he would've wanted to play more until he had a lead. The guy is ultra competitive and I love it. Teams take on the personality of their head coach and I want a team that never quits until they are winning.

Yes and no. It is good to be ultra competitive, but when you've lost, deal with it like a man. They agreed to play 9 holes, they played 9 holes, Jim Harbaugh lost to his brother John. End of game. I can hardly imagine what it's like to play Risk or Monopoly with Jim Harbaugh.

John coached for any team but the Ravens.  Can you folks petition the Fords or something? I'd send a letter to Jimmah Haslam, but he's to busy, what with federal indictments and all

I'm hoping that Bob Quinn realizes Caldwell isn't the answer for the Lions and is merely waiting for John to be released (fired, mutual, whatever) from the Ravens next year.  I think he would be an exceedingly welcome addition to the Lions...

I'm jealous. Harbaugh claims to play a couple times a year and can still get back to back birdies. Just for today, I only like him a little. Back to regularly scheduled programming tomorrow.

Good example of why there's no way Harbaugh leaves without a winning record vs. OSU and Sparty. So he'll be here at least two more years before (per every buckeye fan) running back to the NFL.
