BREAKING: @markcviera and I report that Joe Paterno will not coach next season. Officials are planning his departure. http://nyti.ms/u4XcOz

You have to assume this decision has to do with Sandusky.  While it could have been handled differently and much better by him it's sad to see his career end with this hanging over his head.

How can Mike McQueary or Joe Pa go into a 15,16, 17 year old kid's house and not be kicked out by the parents? They cannot recruit any kid given theur past actions (or inactions).

They don't have a permanent AD and the president may even be out, so I don't know who will even find a replacement.

I wonder if this was one of the HUGE stories that we heard about earlier this summer that was said to be at a school you wouldn't expect in the BIG ten...

Said it would devastate a program, well that def should hold suit here

. . . all around. While I hate to see Joe Pa go out like this, he did have a hand in it. The University has to do what's best for it right now. And in some ways, I believe Joe Pa understands that.

The last decade he has been nothing more than a figure head. He should not hold the all-time wins record and it's funny how this leaks out immediately following him taking over first place. People knew about this story but sat on it so he could win his game. Eddie Robinson was a man of great class and character and still deserves to have the All-Time wins title. If PSU had a younger more competent coach this never would have happend. That is the reason why Joe Pa should have been ejected years ago. That is also the reason why coaches should not be able to call when they walk away. If you are not able to monitor your program and the things that go on, on your watch then you don't need to be the man in charge.

"it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college football’s top level and who made Penn State a prestigious national brand will not survive to coach another season"

Oh man, the NYTimes knows something we don't...

What I don't understand is how Sandusky has maintained his innocence through all of this. Upon what does he maintain that stance? Is that just his lawyers trying to help him receive as little punishment as possible? I just don't get that.

The timing of Sandusky's "retirement" should be the next angle the media pursues. He's basically treated as Joe's heir apparent until 1999 -- less than a year after the 1998 incident. At which point, Sandusky is informed that he'll never succeed Paterno and then retires in his prime. He was hoping to succeed Paterno. But when PSU becomes a no-go, he doesn't get a job elsewhere. Seems awfully curious.

Paterno says he didn't know about the 1998 incident. Campus police investigate one of his coaches for an alleged sex crime committed in the team lockerroom, but somehow nobody informs the head coach of same? How could Paterno not have heard about the complaint/investigation? Many people seem to have known about it. I find it inconceivable that Joe didn't.

We are to believe that Joe didn't know? We are to believe all the circumstances of his retirement? Doesn't pass the smell test. Look at Sandusky's retirement banquet. JoPa shows up only in time to give a very uninspired speech and immediately leaves.

Also we are to believe that when McQuery tells JoPa of the incident in 2002 he doesn't tell him details AND Paterno doesn't ask for clarification? Even if you are able to buy all that he still should have gone to the police and followed up with the AD.

Then the grand jury report says victim 1 was brought to PSU facilities and even team practices in 2007. So what's the story there? They only told him not to take boys into the showers other parts of the athletic complex are fine? JoPa didn't know Sandusky was at practices with young boys?

None of this really passes the smell test.

Wish I could post this more prominently but I don't have the points.   What, if anything does the NCAA do about the Stagg-Paterno Trophy.  This trophy goes to the winner of the B1G Championship game.  Should JoPa's name be attached to this award.

I don't really know the whole history behind this story, like when everything started coming out, but could this be the "10" story that was being rumored this summer?  Also, I understand that football here is incredibly low on the list of what's happening, but I'm just curious.

Are truly unbelievable in attempting to justify the failure to take this to the next level.  Hey, call the fucking AD and ask how he followed up!  The fucking creep Sandusky still had an office and roamed the shower rooms with ten-year old boys!  And some of you think JoePa did all he was required to do?

There is no justification for the lack of any followup.  JoePa must go and every day that he stays is a display of the lack of institutional control yet again over a powerful football coach.

I don't know how to feel about captain fire crotch when he first seen what he did in the shower. It's easy to sit on a computer and say if you were in McQueary's shoes, you would straight roundhouse kick Sandusky Chuck Norris style and heroically pull the child to safety. I know personally I would try to physically stop it in that situation, but not everyone is like me. There are a lot of people that totally avoid any confrontations and are just straight out wusses. Large 6'6" babies do exist. Just because McQueary is a large man doesn't make him a tough guy by any stretch. The man was probably in total shock, way too stunned to grasp mentally what to do. So he ran like a little bitch, called his dad and then told Paterno the next day. Not everyone's a hero. Do I think he's a wuss and should of stopped it, YES! It pisses me off the more I think about. Just saying maybe he was so stunned he froze and couldn't react. Then ran, then called for help. I don't know, I'm just rambling now. This whole thing has me pretty shook up.
