JoePa and Coach K Clinic

Submitted by Mr Mackey on

JoePa and Coach K are part of a program that will air on ESPN on June 30th at 8:00.

They're basically giving out life lessons and advice, and tips that they've picked up through the trade.

One of the interesting things JoePa talked about was what he wants to see happen in college football. He expressed a desire for freshman to be ineligible, talked about how he wants the scholarship limit to increase to 90 from 85, and increased practice time.

I thought all three were interesting for Michigan fans, as the scholarship limit would certainly help us this recruiting season, maybe with Joe's increased practice time, we wouldn't have gotten in trouble, and we have had to start freshmen the past couple years.

Do you think any of these will happen? Or is this just an old guy talking and no one listening?

1. could conceivably happen if there is a strong push that it is a "safety" risk to have freshmen playing, but since I dont think there is any evidence of that I'm guessing no.

2. Small schools would be seriously pissed off that the Michigans, Ohio States, Floridas, Oklahomas, etc. of the world were taking even more athletes to sit on their bench. A benchwarmer at USC could easily be a coveted recruit at a school like Iowa State.

3. No. The emphasis should be on STUDENT-Athletes, the more time these kids are practiciing the more of a joke that becomes. How can someone be a serious student if they are mandatorily devoting even more time to football?

I wouldn't mind the freshman rule if they also limited redshirts to medical cases only. It would basically be like forcing freshmen to use a redshirt in today's rules...something a majority do anyway.

The first two suggestions involve the schools spending more money.  The third one goes against the prevailing trend of giving players more time off so that they can justify not allowing them to take money.  Considering the NCAA's record with money, I can't imagine any of them happening.  Joe Pa's heart is in the right place, though.
