Joe Mathis dominates Rivals SoCal Showcase
but I don't think, in the end, it will be.
I think it's us or Nebraska so either way I found it meaningful. Our D-line coaching will hopefully tip things in our favor. He has been on of my favorite prospects for months
Something just tells me that he's going to end up staying on the west coast. I think he's going to be one of those guys that pick a school that just started recruiting him the week prior.
I have it on good source that Rivals SoCal Showcase is now Mathis' favorite showcase
Man, Mathis would be a nice addition to Hurst and Poggi, I doubt it happens though.
Taco very well may prove the best of the bunch. Freakish sounding, that guy.
i think he will come to the midwest. I just don't see a west coast school that he'd go to.
I get the feeling Washington is every bit in play as Michigan or Nebraska. Until he visits the next guy, it's these three battling in a vacuum.
USC?
With likely one DL spot remaining, we can try to fill it with one of Mathis, Teller, or Muhammad. Not in great standing with any of them, but we only need one.
What about Josh Augusta? I thought we had an aboverage shot with him.
Saw him as a 3-tech, though he is rumored to be recruited at 3 or 5. I say rumored because I can't remember who was saying it or if it's confirmed. FWIW, I believe JC Shurburtt thought Michigan could end up leading for Bower but is now saying SEC. He also is "liking" ND leading for Muhammad. ND will have two DEs (Mutuska & Rochell) by the time Muhammad gets started. Shurburtt's predictions seem to be very loose and often changed, just throwing the connected names around.
I love that "aboverage" doesn't even raise an eyebrow round these parts. That's what community is, man, a common lexicon.
How does Michigan being in Teller's top 3 equate to "not in great standing?" Just curious.
Rumored to be favoring Virginia. Until he visits and we get a reaction, we can't consider Michigan to be in good position to land him. Point is, we're not entirely sure of his true level of interest until he visits. Has seen VT and Virginia multiple times, I believe.
I feel like this is the type of kid that will commit to whoever he gives his last visit to. He said Michigan was his favorite after visiting, then Nebraska was his favorite after visiting there. I understand these are 17-18 year old kids with a big decision to make, but I get the feeling he doesn't really know what he wants in a school just yet.
I just think Mathis ends up at Washington, if not Nebraska. Michigan --- and I know he says USC is out, but I don't buy it...I got them tied for third.
With that said, IF this goes down to the wire...all bets are off. I'll take Hoke/Mattison/Montgomery vs. any staff in the country, INCLUDING Washington's super recruiting staff in a Signing Day Special.
If this goes late...I see a Donovan Warren type surprise late in the year and I like our chances. However, this kid is as predictable as the weekend weather forcast in any city east of the Mississippi.
We have 4 or 5 slots left for recruits in this class (most likely). In order of importance:
First tier: 1 WR / 1 DB
Second tier: 1 RB
Third tier: ????
Most likely we will use the last (or two last) schollies on "best player available" - so Mathis could fit in there. Then you realize who we are talking about and know the kid is never coming to Michigan and it was a mirage the entire time.
