On Christmas Day, two sources that are very close to recruiting at prominent universities confirmed that Jim Tressel will no longer be the head football coach at Ohio State University after the Sugar Bowl against Arkansas.http://chicagonow.com/67GI
Jim Tressel Leaving Ohio State After the Sugar Bowl?
I will believe it when it happens, but who knows what hidden violations are actually there that are coming out...
These rumors sound like the news when Lebron was going to Cleveland, Miami, New York and Chicago at the same time.
This isn't true until the Dispatch confirms it. There's no way in hell some random Little League All Star from Chicago gets this sort of scoop ahead of the Dispatch and all the other Ohio news outlets who pay full time people to cover this stuff.
What kind of f'n loser buckeye fan reads this blog and has a membership? Granted, this site is an ode to the academic reputation of the fine university depicted. And being acquainted or neighbors with dozens osu alums, the contrast, when it comes to thinking beyond surface layer, is stark. I mean I can understand wanting your mind stimulated... I've searched for a good buckeye blog...and there isn't one...but seriously go away
There are a number of Buckeyes on this site that are respectful, so don't speak for the rest of us.
I'd rather have him here than you
Just sayin, Chief.
I hope you realize that many of us Michigan fans also read blogs dedicated to OSU, MSU, ND, etc. Brian, the creator of this blog (and master of the universe), actually used to write an occasional Michigan related article for Bucknuts a few seasons ago.
Reading an opponents blog doesn't make you a "f'n loser." It doesn't mean you have an inferiority complex or are jealous of another program. All it means is that you're a college football addict and you want to be more informed about your opponents. These blogs generally have rumblings of breaking news long before it hits ESPN, SI, etc. They are also a good way to gauge how fans feel about certain topics.
You can ignore my sig.
If it's between me and you...
Let the Dantonio rumors begin...
I kind of hope that would happen since it would help consolidate my hate.
I would feel the same.
I'm Pro Hate Consolidation.
Me too. I hate hate haters.
you would no longer hate Sparty?
I can't stand MSU, but it's more of a pity or annoyance than a hate. I hate Dantonio and I hate OSU. I agree that if Dantonio ever went to OSU, it would consolidate my 'hate'.
I would still hate Sparty.
To the last, I will grapple with thee... from Hell's heart, I stab at thee! For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee!
well put sir! might as well just add vonnegut to the end of your handle.
That would be like Little Brother growing up, only to find out he's adopted.
Just a rumor!
Or, maybe there is something to this.
I have wonderd how the Vest maintains such a squeeky clean image, despite:
(1) the whole Maurice Clarett thing - yes, MC had his issues and had some inherent credibility issues, but the stuff that he was alleging shouldn't have been so easily dismissed.
(2) the whole Troy Smith thing - again, high profile kid with more than a hint that he took $$
(3) the whole TP, Herron, Posey, et al thing.
I know that none of these incident involved allegations involving Tressel (although Clarret did allege that Tress knew), at some point, how does the NCAA not allege that this is "failing to promote an atmosphere of compliance"?
honestly I don't see the connection
Here, let me make it more clear:
"Ohio State has one of the largest compliance departments in the country, yet they have reported 375 violations to the NCAA from 2000-2009, the most in the country."
See the pattern? An environment of non-compliance?
I guess you can't fail to promote an atmosphere of compliance if there never was one present in the first place.
That's an intentional strategy on the part of Doug Archie, OSU's compliance director. OSU's compliance department self-reports everything, and I mean everything, that is or could be a violation as soon as they have enough facts to determine there might be a problem. That's intentional, and it doesn't mean that there were 375 major violations. Those 375 violations include heinous offenses like assistant coaches giving a player a ride from the Woody Hayes center to a dorm because their car wouldn't start.
Doug's theory, and I think he's right, is that the NCAA is a lot more suspicious of schools that aren't self-reporting minor incidents than of schools that are. Given how byzantine the NCAA bylaws are, it's impossible that a school never violates some bylaws. So, by reporting all the violations, they're making it clear that they have an environment of compliance; when they break a rule, they report and self-punish, along with changing practices or policies to prevent future violations.
It's like original sin in the eyes of the NCAA church—all schools are guilty, and the only difference is between those who acknowledge it and go to confession regularly, and those other sinners who won't acknowledge it and never get into the confessional.
they could get better at not doing things if they're so good at documenting them. appears they violate freely and just remember to report it rather than going the route of, you know, not violating
Let me put it this way. JT would/could not have been hired to coach UM based solely on his transgressions committed while @ YSU. Although he had numerous NCs there, 2 or 3, I believe, they don't come close to the number of NCAA violations that occurred while he was heading that program.
I don't buy into all the rumors I read on the rivals site in regard to JT and rule breaking. I thinky he realizes there is no need to blatantly cheat while coaching in Columbus because players are going to come based on the reputation and tradition of the program itself. His players may have pulled some shit; moreso than at other places and his discipline measures may be honestly questioned as to being serious enough to deter players from repeating or sending a message to others not to go there. But all in all, I think he tries very hard to run a clean program, but may be a bit skewed in his thinking that a possible win is more important than pulling a Woody or Bo.
Tressel is good for the conference. He leads a program that has been the flag bearer for the Big X since we lost that honor to them. It has made other coaches work harder and has helped foster a semblance of balance throughout the conference with as many as 4,5 teams having a realistic chance of winning the conference each year. I hope he stays put.
How can someone in charge of the program with the most violations in all of college football the past decade be good for the conference? I don't buy it.
how he sic'ced the dogs on us in 2004. Tressel's an ass and the sooner he's gone the better.
also the AJ Hawk police report.... come on no college kid keeps 3 grand in his apt unless its a little dirty.
"two sources that are very close to recruiting at prominent universities"?
This is like saying "Minneapolis Today confirmed that coaches who recruit for Michigan State and Ohio State have confirmed that Rich Rodriguez will step down."
Its like saying "Minneapolis Today confirmed that coaches who recruit for Penn State and Ohio State have confirmed that Rich Rodriguez is stepping down"
i see what you did there!
I can't see this actually happening unless he's pulling a Pete Carroll before some other violations hit the fan. I'll believe it when I see it.
then where did you read it?
That doesn't mean its true, just that it has gone beyond tweets
Something called "ChicagoNow.com". I've never heard of it before now.
there's like a 1% chance this is true.
The only reason I have found comfort in losing to tOSU is that my perception of Tressel is a coach that does things right and represents what's right with college football. My eyebrows were raised when the Pryor incident went down because of the number of athletes involved and the culpability of a coach for his teams' lack of charecter. (Many could argue this shows lots of charecter, all questionable). It seems to go against the grain of my perception of him, but I don't know him personally.
If there are more things coming down the pipeline, I am really disappointed by collegiate football being so corrupt. If its all this corrupt, just pay the guys and label it what you will.
Crap like this and Scam Newton tarnish the collegiate game IMHO, and it doesn't make my Christmas better, it just lumps us (Big10) into the same category as them (SEC). It seems like just a potential mess if true.
If that's what you believed in Tressel, then you'll be shocked when you hear the straight story about Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.
I guess the lenses in my rose colored glasses have altered my outlook. Throw him under the bus..
Tressel was at the helm when YSU got in major (the real kind of major) trouble.
Peace out Jimmy!
It would make for a most memorable Christmas.
and they'll hire Charlie Weis.
Or Jim Harbaugh.
maybe pryor would stay...
Don't put this off so quick. tOSU will want the best out there if they can Tressel. Harbaugh would be on their radar.
Dominate all the college teams as a corch the way he would have dominated if he weren't playing for Tressel
I wore a sweatervest down in Columbus a few weeks ago. Gotta think he felt encroached upon ... I did this.
neg for your avatar.
What if him leaving involves lots of violations (hypothetical)? Would that feel better?
If they've got violations coming, that would make me feel a little better about him dominating us. Would also explain why Lloyd always had the same face when he shook Carrol and Tressel's hand.
That look probably had something to do with the outcome of those games.
It wasn't like when he lost to other coaches. I remember reading somewhere about how he didn't like their shadyness and it bothered him.
That's an internet meme that won't die. Carr gave a normal handshake and just happened to be photographed as he was turning away.
Carr had some issues dealing with the press, but I don't think any opposing coach ever had a personal issue with him.
This article seems like a joke. The only replacement candidate they talk about is Spielman. That takes the ridiculousness to a whole notha level.
Edit: It was changed to Patterson from TCU
That's how you can tell it's bullshit. If he was leaving, Hazell and Fickell wouldn't have left before the coaching search. And Patterson wouldn't be one of the choices-it'd be Hazell, Fickell, Bob Stoops, maaaybe Urban Meyer, or someone with strong ties to OSU and coaching experience. Bo Pelini was a strong possibility before his meltdown, but Patterson? Not happening unless the search goes to hell. I can see Glenn Mason before Patterson.
Recruits were told starting yesterday that Tressel will no longer be the coach and can start looking elsewhere. Looks like some major compliance issues are coming down soon.
Any insider info? You just restated the article but with a little more authority, where are you getting that from? Just wondering...
Wouldn't it be a violation to contact recruits right now?
I was just joking to show the ridiculous of this.
No way this is true. Christmas has never been this good to me before.
I think it's all speculation in light of what just happened. Natural reaction you could say. I'll believe it when I see it.
omg omg omg this would be the best christmas EVAR if this happened!
Might as well add to the rumor mill since I'm bored as tits at a family party...
From the guy that broke the Jim Tressel story on twitter.
I am totally comfortable taking shots about the Tressel story. I'm comfortable w/ my sources.
I hope his source wasn't Melanie Collins.
Or Lynn Henning. Or Michael Wilbon. Or... well, you get the idea.
I just don't know how any of these people are still employed. They have very simple job descriptions. Get information, confirm it, report it. When in doubt, say so. Unless there are extremely good and compelling journalistic reasons, you require your sources to go on the record. Only in extreme, rare circumstances would you not identify yhour sources.
In this case, it's a bit complicated because I am not sure that "Tab," the fatassed suburban Chicago jackoff who first "published" this rumor, actually has a job to begin with. Firing him would be like firing Kramer.
I'd like to have a better record against him before he leaves... I'd really like to see Rodriguez beat him.
"Ohio State has one of the largest compliance departments in the country, yet they have reported 375 violations to the NCAA from 2000-2009, the most in the country."
Actually, that makes perfect sense. OSU is pretty quick to cooperate with the NCAA when infractions occur (and given the size of the NCAA rulebook, infractions are inevitably going to happen everywhere). They don't stonewall.
but if the rumor were true, would he be leaving for somewhere else, or retiring?
Wouldn't be much of a stretch to imagine him taking the Cleveland Browns job then they fire Mangini. He will be forever loved by Ohio fans.
but they like Mangini... I guess that's what happens when you get used to losing, wouldn't mind seeing my Bengals hire him though. I like Tressel, mostly because of the way he reacted to the UM investigation.
should we believe anything he says?
So I click the "About Tab" link:
Tab is a former Clarendon Hills Little League All Star who played football, swam and ran track at Hinsdale Central High School before playing football at Taylor University (Upland, IN). The father of Matthew and husband of Kristin currently has Blackhawks season tickets and a passion for all things Chicago.
OK, his credentials make him an unimpeachable source. How could I have ever doubted him?
Small world- I actually knew that guy pretty well. I played at Taylor with him.
He seemed like a pretty level headed guy. I'm not sure why he would make a claim like this unless he's right or become less logical than he was about 5 years ago.
I'm not saying he's right- just that it gives me more pause that (to me) it's not some random idiot making an outrageous claim...that it's a guy I knew personally who seemed like a very reasonable individual.
I'm going to try to get ahold of him and see if I can get anything out of him about his 'sources'...
It's Christmas, not April Fools Day. Tressel isn't going anywhere.
I'll believe it when I see it. Til then, Tressel is staying at Ohio State.
often imitated, never duplicated
I want to see some more reputable sources about this, but they may come down after christmas has finished
smh at anyone slightly believing this. this isn't true nor would i necessarily be "happy" that it is. just like someone said earlier. why be happy someone you cant beat is leaving?
Maybe because someone we can't beat is leaving?
you know what i meant. we dont want him to leave, we want him to stay around long enough for us to help him go.
Sure, I know what you mean, but that is the whole thing about cheating. Maybe he was winning BECAUSE he was cheating. The cheating wouldn't be all of it, of course, he is at least a very good coach. But if he leaves, it would make you wonder.
Tressel out before Rodriguez? The Lions on a 2-game winning streak? The basketball team... good? What is happening???
The soccer team makes the college cup (can't remember what they call it), St. Izzo gets suspended for a game, and Iowa is basically one giant crack-house. What a month.
I call BS. It might be related to this obvious hoax article from our pals at blackheartgoldpants
that he thinks that article is serious?
I don't think much of this report, but it appears to be an effort at serious journalism.
Just waiting for the DB knew this was happening and that's why he waited to CC or not thread.
Hard to believe no reputable source has picked up on this if it were legit. If they have informed recruits (teenagers) it should have been all over the internet by now.
How ridiculous would it be to tell the recruits they can look elsewhere? Not credible.
bleacher report did. I will stand by the statement in the subject line.
Someone updated his wiki:
I don't believe this rumor, at all.
Why would he tell recruits first? It makes no sense. He can always tell them later and they can commit elsewhere, it's not like it's 1 day before signing day.
Just doesn't make sense.
Yes. It is false. That twitter also cites this article
let's start scouring ohio state's recruits' twitters
Also, Paul is dead!
We all know that this is too good to be true. I'll believe this one when I hear it from a real source. Why do we torture ourselves like this?
Who knows, maybe there's some more trouble coming down the pipe for tOSU.
It almost looks like he's pulling a Ron Meyer or Pete Caroll. Jump ship before the ship completely sinks.
Regardless if he steps down or not....I'll never figure out how Michigan gets bashed for practicing twenty minutes too long and Ohio State gets in huge trouble for a few players selling some stuff while another large group of players can dress up in camo, beat up innocent students and be completely absolved of any wrongdoing or punishment in the eyes of the media. I know the thought is semi-OT to this thread but it keeps coming up in my mind when discussing the OSU situation.
Dream on fans! Gene Smith OSU AD just tweeted NOT TRUE!!!!
Hell, most of us don't want him to. I personally don't want him to ride off into the sunset without at least one more loss to the maize and blue.
Well, that is unless they are going to bring back Coop...
He didn't specify which rumors, hmmm? A closer reading of this tweet suggests he's responding to rumors of bad eggnog or rumors that Gene Smith spends too much time watching NBA games.
Seriously. Hasn't twitter made the world so strange???
Who's dreaming? The majority of us didn't believe it was true. Learn to read, jackass.
WOW!!!! I guess 2590 days makes one a bit salty!
That doesn't surprise me that you might find it so.
Wow! Guess hit a nerve with someone. Didn't realize the word "dream" was "fighting words". I would figure
You were just called out by a Michigan State fan for being classless. Evidently you didn't bother reading his response. The word "dream" has nothing to do with it. No one is looking for a fight. Back to Mordor with you.
I really doubt he understood anything WatersDemos was trying to say. Seriously, that's why he resorted to the "dream" comment.
Whaddit I tell ya? The Spartan version of Irish . . . if Irish ever told a Buckeye what it is.
WD, you were unfairly criticized on this board the other day for nothing more than posting-while-Spartan. I regret that I did not stand up for you more vigorously.
but I only mention it when Michigan fans start talking shit about Tressel's inability to win "big" games.
Shut up, OSU_Bucks. You're the kind of OSU fan I hate and the school doesn't need.
The players on Twitter don't know anything about it and if you know Tress, they would be the first to hear, not the recruits!
Shame on all of us who thought that this announcement was valid even for a minute. I've been smacking my own neck for an hour straight.
The dismantling of our enemy does not provide victory...
Coach Tressel leaving in a Pete Carroll manner would not be good for our conference...
What I find interesting is the source of the rumor. Either this guy just made it up, knowing that Christmas would be a slow news day, or some people at Illinois or Northwestern are trying to spread rumors.
Edit: Turns out this Tab Bramford is a Michigan fan. How many mgopoints does this get?
The name or the news?
The Walmart in Bolingbrook must carry some Michigan apparel.
Very good news if true for Michigan fan seeing how many times he won against Michigan in the rivalry
Hopefully this helps turn the tide and end "The Streak"
A rumor is still a rumor until it actually happens.
Anyway, if this were to be true, I'd rather it happen after we beat him. So wait another year Tressel
If he got hit by a 1988 Pontiac with Michigan plates. All the victory I need.
This is like the time I said I would give up Mountain Dew and TV for Lent. I convinced myself there was a chance, but there just wasn't.
He's been called back to Mordor to rebuild the empire. Prepare for Lord of the Rings 4.
simply return to Sodor. Um, wait what?
has given us a little update at the end of the article. Definitely taking this FWIW for now, at least.
UPDATE: I have read comments from Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith on Saturday afternoon. I am also well aware that Ohio State fans and alumni don't like me; the thousands of personal attacks and taunts on Twitter made that perfectly clear.
However, the sources that provided me with this information were clear with their comments, and I am comfortable sticking with what I have been told. If I was wrong, I will publish a strong statement to that effect in the future.
gotta say as much as I hate the man, I really hope that he does not retire until we beat him a couple of times. The last thing we need is the suck nut fans having a coach that we were never able to beat.
No matter if this dude is right or wrong, he got what he wanted – Fame.
Carry on and Happy Holidays!
pretty lights....mannheim steamroller...
worthy of a +1
Too bad, so sad.....
FWIW, the Ohio AD was denying any problems with rule breaking by players right up to the day of the official announcement last week. Not saying the Vest rumors are true, but I also don't take a denial by the tOSU AD as the absolute last word.
This wouldn't surprise me even a little under the circumstances. There's good reason this rumor has momentum right now (even if false).
The AD twat (?) is less than convincing. I wouldn't expect anything but a denial at this point.
I'm not saying I'd bet on it being true... I wouldn't put money on it either way.
And he wouldn't be the first AD in recent history to make some outlandish claims...as in Bowlsby from Stanford explaining that Harbaugh would be signing an extension.
Then again, we had our Dave Brandon use twitter to defuse any rumors about an "announcement" being made after the OSU loss...
So now we're back to where we started. Fan-f'ing-tastic.
Guess we'll all find out after the Sugar Bowl. Perhaps an OSU win would mean this is more likely to come true...? What am I thinking. Go Arkansas and the tid-bit of Michigan left in Mallet.
I don't think his leaving helps UM in any way. I would prefer that he stays so that we can start beating him and even up the score a tad.
Wait i thought they wanted him gone? Because after every loss, which isn't often, they go batshit crazy about Tressball and they'll never win another national title under him? They're starting to sound like spoiled Michigan fans...
After Fupa got canned it was so much fun hearing all of the "potential" coaches they had lined up I figured I would add Sweater Vest to the list if they can Kelly.
What? A.) Why would they can Kelly? Winning season + Bowl Game + First Year + Beat USC/BC; B.) Why would Tressel leave OSU? Elite Power House + Awesome Salary. or C.) Why would ND hire a coach fired for some amorphous ethics lapse so scandalous it takes out a legendary coach?
Would you have understood better if I had put " /S " as the end?
Whether he leaves or not I think the money quote is their non-compliance issues despite having more people than any other program to prevent such things.
So what you're saying is....tOSU cares more about compliance in a system that has never really punished them than automatic 11-1 seasons? I'll believe that when I see it! Tressel has the best job security in the country. OSU fans could care less if he punches penguins while taking the Lord's name in vain.
If this is true but I did read the University has had 375 infractions since 2000.
I'm waiting(secretely hoping) for more details to come out about TP and the other OSU players who were involved in this mess. My theory is that an agent was buying this stuff behind the scenes, in exchange for the players signing with him when they decide to turn pro. Then the agent gives back the rings, etc. Tressel then feels the heat turned up!
that Urban could come out of "retirement"? The only thing worse than having Tressel there, who I generally respect, is Urban who could make life in AA even worse than it has been.
I'd definitely like to see a guy as successful as him leave OSU, since he'd be a tough act to follow, but all these "It would be the best Christmas ever!" posts are just a little over the top, no? Anyone who seriously feels that way must be worse off than Tiny Tim.
With The vest gone, I could wina couple games maybe. I likes cheeseburgers
