Jim Mora new UCLA HC

Submitted by Noleverine on

Looks like Jim Mora will be coaching UCLA, according to rumors on ESPN.com.

Jim L. Mora will be named football coach at UCLA Saturday, a source close to the situation told ESPNLosAngeles.com. Mora, the former coach of the Seattle Seahawks and the Atlanta Falcons, is currently an analyst for the NFL network. He replaces Rick Neuheisel, who was fired after going 21-29 during his four years with the Bruins.

According to the article, it will be officially announced sometime today.

EDIT: Realizing this may cause some confusion, I'd like to clarify.  It's the younger Jim Mora

Not the older

The problem with hiring NFL coaches is that the qualities needed to be successful aren't necessarily the same in the NFL as the NCAA. Everyone in the NFL can seriously play. That's not the case in college. In college only elite teams can field 20+ really strong players. There are practice time restrictions and seriously arcane rules to follow.

Also, college coaches need to recruit and be able to deal with 18-21 year old kids. There are plenty of exceptions, but the NFL is by and large a league of very serious professionals who work their asses off day-to-day.

I'm impressed with the last few hires in the PAC12. They really embrace what the conference is about. All Offense and no D. With these coaches only having to concentrate on one side of the ball, it takes pressure off of the coaches and makes exciting football. It doesn't win championships, but it's entertaining.

this is just more proof that ad's (especially this one) have no clue what's going on.  i still can't believe anyone would've actually hired neuheisal when he did.  i have one image of that loser and that's the 97 game when he kept crying like a baby and yelling at his qb.  come on man, it's woodson back there, what did you expect.

Go to Bruins Nation and read their reaction. They're so over the top.

"They should know though that if this is indeed Mora, while we will give new coach a chance, we will not support UCLA athletics in any way until a new Athletic Director takes over for Dan Guerrero. This means all out war on Chianti Dan."

Bruins fans are completely insane, but they've been driven insane by the past decade. There's actually a lot of parallel's to Michigan's situation over the past decade, but with an important difference of commitment from the people in charge to stop the bleeding. Michigan has commitment from the top ranks UCLA does not and the fans have reached a boiling point.
