Jim Hackett talks need for transparency in athletics
Our Hero & Michigan Interim AD Jim Hackett speaking at the Michigan League on Wednesday
Interim Athletic Director Jim Hackett and Liz Barry, special counsel to University President Mark Schlissel, discussed ideas for improving sporting venues, the recruitment process and the importance of a transparent relationship between the athletic department and students at an open forum Wednesday.
The discussion was coordinated by Central Student Government as a venue for students to bring up topics pertaining to athletics as the University transitions to a new athletic director, Warde Manuel, next year.
“I love when we go crazy with the students,” he said. “That’s what makes me want to go to the games: to watch you. Not only does the team feed off of it but the rest of the fans do too.”
Looking at recruitment — specifically football recruitment — Hackett said the values the University was built on, such as integrity and academic excellence, are important when looking for prospective players.
“It goes without saying that the standards here are pristine in terms of integrity,” he said. “It’s a 150 year old program, and it’s the underlying values that make it great.”
The discussion of recruitment followed the University’s Signing with the Stars event earlier Wednesday for National Signing Day, which featured University alums Derek Jeter and Tom Brady.

Why? I would say last year as a whole overall it was the loudest I've ever heard it and the most people I've seen continually standing without complaining, but there's still room for improvement. I thought the way they had the decibel meter on the scoreboard a couple times was a good idea
Hackett has also talked about getting the students as close to the field as possible. I think that would be the best in getting the best atmosphere possible if it could be pulled off.

the entire stadium encircled with the high brick so more of the sound stays in. We dont need more box seats, so those areas could be for food courts and Michigan historical items and even a football museum.

You can always improve it like Crisler going from a dungeon to a state of the art facility. The difference is that Dave Brandon thought that bringing out a guy dressed an Arby's oven mitt was what everyone wanted.

Well, Mark Emmert is in fact the first and so far only person to be the head of an organization that has threatened the eligibility of student-athletes over an overly generous helping of fettucini, so he does have that going for him. It's a weird but notable achievement that I assume looks good on a resume written in Comic Sans.

the next University President.

It won't happen. He did great things for the athletic dept., and the football program in particular, as interim AD. But he doesn't have a track record of launching major research funding initiatives across several divisions of a university, or managing overall university budgets, or resolving disputes between deans, or handling major legal challenges. When the U. President position has become available, UM has tended to look to candidates with experience in similar sorts of positions rather than to people who managed a single department. If Hackett is intersted in becoming University President, then he'll put himself onto a track that will lead to such a position eventually. But I haven't seen anything suggesting he'll do that.

I hate to burst your bubble but more than likely there's nobody that gets recruiting classes in the top five that's completely clean.

blown open? YOu read about the bagman? Clarrett saying he was paid at OSU? Treadwell with pics of money. It's not some elaborate conspiracy....its pretty much out in the open.
But hey, if you're the Fab 5 and one of your players takes cash, or you are SMU circa late 80s you get hammered. Sacrificial lambs pop up once in a while, but overall its business as usual.

We did not really get all that hammered over the Fab Five. We did that to ourselves with self-imposed sanctions and bad coaching hires.

A decibel meter throughout the game would be awesome. How about adding seat cushions to every seat? I stand majority of the time anyways, so it really doesn't apply to me but to sit comfortably occasionally rather than sitting on a rock hard piece of steel

The bleachers are actually aluminum and not steel.

Great Hackett interview on WTKA this morning. Hackett knows how to set the tone and speak with refreshing specifics - there is no BS about the guy.
Also very classy how he gave props to Sam and Ira. It was well deserved and it was heartening to hear them receive credit from him, for entertaining yet balanced, thoughtful and enjoyable coverage.
