"Rich is a football coach. He's proud of being a football coach. He wants to go find the best football players he can and find a way to get them into whatever university he's coaching at, regardless of anything outside of football." And this is wrong how??? Assclown.

How long did Carty work in AA and cover the Wolverines? I've followed UM Football for the last 5 years, and only the last couple of years on the internet. In these last couple of years I've never read anything positive or optimistic from Carty as far as Michigan football goes. Has he ever done that? From my limited perspective, either this guy hates our team, or he is pessimistic by nature.

"Despite being a very likable guy, he's had a tin ear for public relations, dragging out the silly contractual dispute with West Virginia for months longer than he had to and stepping into unnecessary off-the-field noise again and again (jersey numbers, Justin Boren, etc.)." Okay, so you take a guy like Carr who actively HATED the press and told reporters to go eff themselves (in a very poetic cultured way of course) and replace him a guy who has given unprecedented access to the press and HE HAS A TIN EAR for PR??? Seriously is he on coke? How is this idiot registered at my school ? I feel stupid for having shared the same buildings with this clown.

That may be my single favorite moment in Michigan football history. I laughed so hard when he said that. Of course, I've always been a little irritated by the intrusiveness of sideline reporters (why can't inanely vague questions wait until after the game?), so I thought he did what every coach should do.

Carty is a perfect example of why the newspaper business, and journalism in general, are in such trouble in this country. He was always much more interested in portraying himself as the tell-it-like-it-is crusader, when in reality he was a smug, self-righteous hack who would hide behind "I can say anything I want, I'm a columnist, not a reporter" when criticized for his usual multitude of unsupported insinuations, plain distortions, and outright fabrications. In particular, anybody fancying himself a "journalist" who is still clinging to the notion that Rodriguez is somehow to blame for Justin Boren leaving the team in a father-driven snit over his little brother not getting a scholarship demonstrates a blithe, all-encompassing ignorance of the facts. The legal profession will not be the beneficiary.

Carty has never had a positive thing to say about The University of Michigan Football program. His hatchet job he did before leaving the AA News had me cancel my subscription. For every kid that has a dope deal gone bad, there is a kid that was given a chance and turned their life around. They became good citizens and although maybe not the best athletes, they contributed to the greater good of the team. Where is the leeway for that? If we take the moral high-ground with our program and only take the top students, we may as well get used to losing on a regular basis. Universities admit "hardship" cases every year for students that don't play a sport. Some of them work out, some don't. What's the difference if they play a sport? Just my 2 cents.

He spent a lot of time on his blog bragging about his athletics and academics hatchet job. And he even took credit when UM gave a bland, politically correct announcement that athletics and academics would be looked into at UM and that some changes would be made. Carty did a lot of decent work while at the Ann Arbor News. It's just sad that this blind spot leads to such a pompous and arrogant stance vis a vis UM and athletes. It makes it too easy to forget the good things he wrote and the fact that he really treated his readership better than he needed to. Carty took the Joe Falls approach and personally answered every email sent to him. I believe he was the only UM beat writer who did that on a regular basis, though Angelique C(I'm not even going to try and spell it) used to answer a lot, too. Sadly, that isn't what most people will remember about him because he won't let go of this shit. I have to wonder if RR kicked sand in his face at the beach or something.

Fact check: wasn't Josh Moore a done deal before Martin came on as AD? I can't remember the timing exactly, it's been awhile. I do love the comments on that thread, though. Carty keeps going back to the defense of "this is a feel thing", which no doubt will serve him well in a courtroom, especially if the judge is a wise Latina. That said, I'm not sure what to say about Carty. Maybe he's just looking for page hits as some sort of affirmation that he matters, instead of being a middle-aged, middle-of-the-pack student at a second-tier law school. I have no facts to support that assertion: it's just a feel thing.

Its just my civic pride, that's all. Like with Dave, I upvoted another one of your comments because, in my heart, capricious negbanging is not me. Just having a little fun with ya guys, hope you dont mind. You're more than welcome to come to town and catch a Toledo Walleye game with this winter.

Here's the standard Jim Carty plan of operation: 1. Negative assertion, based upon very dubious interpretation of facts. 2. After receiving smart criticism of his original statements, he then labels his critics as being overly defensive due to the fact that, being UM fans, they can't be objective like he is. In other words, if you disagree with him, you are biased.

We all recall the almost-award winning Athletics and Academics series that the now-defunct A^2 News put out. We now know that the News was dying at the time, and that all of the main persons involved with the series knew they would be leaving. Is it a safe assumption at this point that the series was penned as a resume-padder and/or minor getback against one of the more press-unfriendly places in the country? Mind you, this is just a feel thing.

". . . stepping into unnecessary off-the-field noise again and again (jersey numbers, Justin Boren, etc.)." As I recall, it was Justin Boren who did all the talking. I seem to remember that, when pressed on the issue, Rodriguez simply said, "I just talk about the guys who play for Michigan." I want to know how he "stepped" into that one, other than running a program not to the liking of Justin Boren. Did I forget something RR said later? That's possible, but I think I would have remembered it. I think Feaster nailed it. Calling attention to your objectivity again and again kinda defeats the purpose, no? And I'm one who didn't have a big problem with the academics story Carty did. My only problem was that it was made into a mountain when it was really an intermediate hill. It was what we call in the newspaper biz a "notebook dump." As in, "looky at all the hard work I did." People like Carty need strong editors, and I don't think he had one. Of course, I don't have any hard facts to back that up. It's just my "feel" based on reading his work and being in the business myself (until recently.)

My feel based on reading these comments is that we have a new meme to run into the ground before the season starts. BOOM CARTY'D
