Jets like Donovan Warren, move to S, feelings on M
According to a recent Jets special on SNY, the Jets really like Donovan Warren's game. The rumblings say that they are moving him to safety, as they are absolutely loaded at CB. The rumors are that he's not in danger of not making the team:

In an interview with Warren's godfather, a recent hire as a DL coach for the Jets (?!?!), he says the following about Warren's decision to leave:
“I don’t think he regretted it. Obviously, I think he wished things worked out a little bit different for him. But . . . the Michigan he went to wasn’t there anymore. For him to go back, was that going to be more of a burden?”

ouch
That burned.
So I'll repeat my reaction:
I think with the changes among Warren's advisors and what's gone on, the Warren who came to Michigan isn't here anymore.
If Donovan Warren and his advisors are happy with his decision, I'm okay with that. As far as I can tell, if Mark Carrier (and/or drew Rosenhaus) were advising D-War to go into the NFL draft because he'd be picked in the first couple of rounds, they were wrong. So I don't know what sort of credibility Mark Carrier ought to have now. No; actually, I do know what sort of credibility Mark Carrier ought to have now -- very, very little. What else do you say when you've advised a kid to quit school to enter the NFL draft, and then the kid doesn't get drafted? You say, "Oh, there wasn't anything for him to do at that school anymore..."
So Mark Carrier's comment scores all zeros in terms of crediblility, importance, relevance, significance, general sensibility, and the level at which the University of Michigan football program should be "concerned" about what Mark Carrier says.
Mark Carrier is a USC Trojan. The rebuttable presumption is that anything said by anyone who is a USC Trojan, is garbage.
I'm a generous guy; as I say, the presumption of "garbage" is a rebuttable presumption. Somewhere, somehow, it is a theoretical possibility that a USC Trojan could say something valid. Sort of like the chances of an asteroid bringing carbon-form life to a planet. Or returning a Zoltan Mesko punt.
How deep are the Jets at safety? I assume he won't see the field in the near future.
I wont blame him for feeling the way he feels, I don't think anybody can. I do respect Warren though for not running his own mouth, and keeping it more-or-less to himself, as of now.
edit: sorry that was supposed to be in response to the post above.
I don't know what Ryan has planned, but what I do know is they traded away last year's starter Kerry Rhodes for a couple of picks if I'm not mistaken, and did not pick up a safety. I wouldn't think it'd be out of the realm of possibility, but I'll leave that for the experts of the board to conclude.
Actually, there isn't too much depth. They have Jim Leonard, Erik Smith (MSU grad), and recently signed Brodney Pool as the main guys. They have some other journeymen but if the Jets keep four safeties, I think he'd have a shot. At the very least, he could make the practice squad and then go from there.

Look at his measurables! Surely Donovan Warren can top that?
Unfortunately, Warren's biggest advantage over Leonhard is probably his height. Leonhard ran a reported 4.58 compared to Warren's 4.68...
DW has enough size for safety, but he's going to have to get a lot stronger. Getting out-benched by New England's punter isn't going to cut it in the pros.
None the less, he was outbenched by a punter. Call me crazy but...
It would only be crazy if it were a mortal punter.
mortals vs. gods lowest selling pay-per view fight ever.
Just no depth at corner to move him, but it was clear he should have been a safety from the get go. But the best thing going for him is many nfl teams like converting safeties that have played corner and are comfortable covering man to man, wich Donovan can do.
But I am happy for him going to a great defense and moving to a more natural position but most importantly a place with an oppertunity to succeed.
Last comment really deals with he came here for Ron English and the family really thought English would be at michigan his 4yrs, liked shafer and only didn't transfer out with shafer promising to build the coverages around donovan.
I don't think he should have been a safety after his freshman year. He's arguably been Michigan's best corner for the past couple years, and he's never really been picked on in college. He wasn't a great college cornerback, but saying he should have been a safety all along is revisionist history.
I'm getting awfully tired of former players and/or their families undercutting the program. Neg me if you want... but if this is how he feels, then good riddance.
If you don't believe in the program, you don't belong in the program.
Am I the only one who fails to see the "ouch" "burned" or "undercutting" aspect of that last statement? Stop being so hypersensitive people! I don't think it's a shot at the program. It's simply a reflection that Warren was living through an undeniably rough transition from the program he came to play for (HC, DC, etc.) to another program, and preferred to move on when he got the chance. It is really quite normal.
I took the comment to be about the growing pains and perhaps the fact that he was recruited by Ron English and had a good relationship with him, not blasting RR. But I guess the truth hurts sometimes.
You are probably right. If that is the case, I redact my above statement.
I have become hypervigilant in my defense of the program. After former players, the local media, national media, and fans alike have rained downed negativity for two years, I have begun to construe everything as a direct attack on Coach Rod. It has become a knee-jerk reaction.
"...the Michigan he went to wasn’t there anymore." Regardless of how you feel about it, this is pointing out the obvious. I don't have a problem with it. Watching the ESPN report on Notre Dame's transition with Kelly this morning, it beacame clearer. Notre Dame will have former players saying "the Notre Dame I went to isn’t there anymore." It is my opinion that DW left because there were experts who told him he would get drafted in the first half of the draft, not because he couldn't handle the coaching staff - but I'm just going on information I've read.
....DW's god father is a coach on the JETS (Just End The Season!)
It's not like his godfather is some dude off the street - Carrier actually has some experience as a coach. He was DB coach for the Ravens the last 4 years...
Also, Mark Carrier was a pretty fine safety in his playing days - and a very smart player, so it makes sense for him to be coaching.
What I would want to ask the Jets is why they have a former Safety coaching the Defensive Line.
Most will disagree, but... It's just my opinion.
OK someone has to respond.......
I could not in a million years fathom how you reached that conclusion.
If I'm not mistaken, the remaining cornerbacks (Woolfolk, Turner, Floyd, Rogers) have a combined ZERO career interceptions. And the only other defensive back with a pick is Jordan Kovacs.
Somehow, I don't think Warren's departure is going to make us better.
RR just has to win. i really dont see former players and/or family members calling out a program thats having a lot of success.
i hope RR does turn things around, because just about everyone that called out the program in one way or another will look stupid.
As an old school guy, it's troubling to see Michigan adopting a "run-n-gun" spread offense that is quite different from the traditional style. That said, victories will do much to ameliorate my nostalgic feelings for the Michigan style of old.
i agree, my preferred offense is more of a passing based spread O, similar to the Fla/Mich game but with even more confidence in the play calling.
i do want to know this. when was the last time tradition won a football game? last time i checked, Michigan's biggest tradition was winning football games.
I hope whoever called Warren a "moron" last week for going to the Jets because of their cornerback depth is eating crow right now, since they completely ignored the constant rumors that Warren would be an NFL safety.
This is a prime example of how being an undrafted free agent is usually preferable to going in the 7th round. He was able to pick the situation he felt gave him the best shot. If the ankle was holding him back and it turns out to be fixed he may well have a good shot with the Jets.
i didn't see the part where he is (rumored to be) not at risk of getting cut. Is that from another source? Sure hope that proves true.
perhaps you missed it, but DW didn't get drafted.
If the article projects his actual feelings for u of m then I have no love in my heart for him...DW you are dead to me..
This is getting fucking ridiculous. Can we stop saying ex-Michigan players are "dead to us" or "excommunicated" because they weren't fans of the coaching change? Just deal with the fact that these guys weren't recruited by Rodriguez and, whaddaya know, don't really like losing a shit-ton of games. They still did a ton more for the program than you ever did or ever will.
my response was fairly sarcastic. I am sorry if you were not able to read through my sarcasm and it upset you. on another note, it seems as if the mgopoints have swelled your head to the point of ranting and personally attacking me. Take a xanax bro and chill.
a) You need to work on your sarcasm.
b) The MGoPoints have done nothing - I would rant at you whether I had 20,000 points or -50.
c) I didn't personally attack you, unless you take "He's done more for the program than you" as a personal attack . . . and if you take that as an insult, then you're pretty thin-skinned.
