Jesse Palmer says we are above scheduling App St.

Submitted by wolverine1987 on

Just watched today's College Football Live show on ESPN where they discussed Brandon and our scheduling App State 2: The Revenge. Jesse Palmer took the position that it was a no win situation, that a 77-0 victory does nothing to erase The Horror, that there was no reason to re-schedule them, and that we should "put our bags down and move on." Not sure what that last thing meant exactly, but I get the gist. He finished with (paraphrase) "Michigan is above this and above App. St, sorry."  Pretty much the exact Brian position.

Love that the board is bashing Palmer personally instead of the Worldwide Leader which has set itself up with these lame shows like "College Football Live" that command that everything be analyzed 24/7 and pundits take the smallest things very seriously.

Name another college football game being played in 2014 that's being talked about right now.  In fact, when was the last time people were talking about a game that was 2+ years out ever?  That was Brandon's whole reason for scheduling it.  It's a game of interest.  People watch games of interest.

Palmer also compared scheduling App State to us rescheduling Colorado in 1996 and 1997 after losing by the hail mary in 1994.  He said there was no point because the damage has already been done.

Umm, I know it's hard to believe now but Colorado was a top 5 program when this series was scheduled.  Plus wasn't that a 2 for 1 series anyway?  We still had to finish those games.

The hail mary may have been painful, horrible, awful...but I certainly enjoyed the FAIL mary game in Boulder in 96 and kicking their asses at the big house in 97.

2 for 1 scheduled before '94 (of course).

In 1997, The Sporting News had Colorado as their preseason number 1.  Beating the crap out of them got us (#18 preseason, IIRC) some invaluable early-season national hype.  To go one step further, that game is always the counter argument to the "we need more baby seals to club" scheduling debate.  That game really set the tone for the season.  Hopefully we get the same sorta catalyst next Saturday night.

Well, Palmer was on "The Bachelor," so his opinion on all things manly is irrelevant.  However, he's somewhat right in that this is a lose-lose for us.  We win and it doesn't erase what happened in '07 and people will just go, "yep, that's pretty much what should've happened."  We lose, and it will create The Horror: Part 2.  I personally am against this high risk, low reward scheduling.  No good will possibly come of it.

I am somewhat in agreement with Palmer. Beating the crap out of App. State does nothing to erase the fact that The Horror happened. I'm sure, from a personal standpoint, it'd feel good to beat them, and beat them bad, but to the rest of the nation, if you win, no one cares. You beat a team that has no business of winning. And if you lose, not to mention for a second time, you're a national laughingstock. You become the new Notre Dame, but probably worse. You could win 10 more national titles, but will still be remembered for losing to the same FCS team twice.

Michigan has little to gain by playing this game, but I respect Brandon for scheduling it. It takes guts to schedule a team that absolutely humiliated you and scarred your program. It won't matter if Michigan is the preseason #1 that year. There will be a ton of pressure on the team to win. Would not be surprised to see Gameday show up.

Palmer was handed the keys to a Rolls Royce in Florida, and drove it like a Hyndai Accent.  He could never quite grab and keep the starting job for any period of time, and even lost his job to a freshman at one point.

He continued his career path of "close, but no cigar" on The Bachelor.

I don't think "close, but no cigar" qualifies him to tell other schools how to run their programs.

Jesse Palmer may be a total knob but he has a point. If we had won that game, we probably wouldn't be playing them again. By playing them, we seem insecure, like we have a chip on our shoulder. I know there's money involved and all that stuff, but still.

I don't know who Jesse Palmer is and care even less, but he's right on the money here.  If he is a clueless nozzle then... sunshine, meet dog's ass.

As someone cleverer than I pointed out, 2007 App. State game was Michigan's shameful sex tape where we managed to get both blueballs and erectile dysfunction and then inadvertently hit the 'send' button trying to fumble the condom on.

The 2014 App. State game is us taking the same girl out on a legit date and renting a tux+limo and springing for bottle service to impress her and her friends.  But no matter how awesome the date goes, what do you think they're going to be talking about before and after the date?

I have to disagree with his statment that we're "above them". They beat us. That simply puts them on our level. They will never ever be what Michigan is, but they had their shot and they won the game. Therefore, they are, by default, worthy competition. It beats the heck out of another Eastern Michigan beatdown, and that is how you GET history between schools.

Also, no one remembers VA Tech getting pasted by James Madison, and who would have anything to say about it if they made a home-and-home outside of hokie land? We aren't the only ones to lose a game like that. It ONLY mnatters because it was Michigan. If it wasn't Michigan, no one would remember 2 years later.

As an aside, Im always tickled by OSU fans bringing that up, as they forget their annual single digit scrapes with the like of OHIO (the bobcats) and Toledo and Cincy. One of these days.....it'll be them. Navy beat Notre Dame, Ohio will beat OSU, it's just gonna happen.

Different teams with different players will be on the field. The horror as some call it won't be brought up forever. Just because a team beats you that isn't supposed to, and that team is put on the schedule again doesn't mean anything. People make it into a big deal when it is not.

I think Jesse's underlying assumption is that had we not lost the first contest, we probably would not have rescheduled App St., or at least it would have taken longer for them to find theirselves back on our schedule. He's probably right.

I don't disagree with Palmer if App St. was scheduled as some form of "revenge" - this is Michigan, fergodsakes.  You don't need to bash in the head of a DII school to get your mojo back.  That said, they were scheduled because UM wanted a cupcake, and that is what they'll be.  If UM had scheduled, what, Delaware St. instead, would that be below them as well?  So for that reason, Palmer is making a mountain out of a BCS mole hill.

Jesse Palmer is the most obnoxious commentator on ESPN . He uses a set series of hand motions and facial expressions over and over while blathering on about the same old who cares material. Watch him closely and you'll see it. It distracts from the subject matter and focuses the attention on HIM.

While I agree that you guys are above this, I will also add that you should not qualify for a BCS game or the future playoff if you play 1 FCS team, let alone 2 like FSU.
