NCAA rules that #JeremiahMasoli won't be able to play this season at Ole Miss. Rebels say they plan to appeal.

Im guessing thats a pretty big blow for that program, i couldnt even name another QB on their roster if i had too.

No he was eligible because he graduated from Oregon and got accepted into a graduate program not offered in Eugene.

Its basically a loophole that he exploited because he was kicked off the team.

should never have been there in the first place. The loophole is just another example of the NCAA having their collective heads up their ass. Masoli doesn't deserve to play another down ever. Period.

Agreed.

The whole thing felt dirty from the beginning. Masoli wasn't getting a 2nd chance, he was getting a 4th. And Ole Miss wanted nothing to do with him until their QB situation went to shit.

I'm not saying that he shouldn't be allowed to play ever again. But he should have to sit out a year at least, and IF he has eligibility left then he could resume play at that time.

If his track record is any indication, however, he'd probably get arrested again during his year off and that would be the end of it.

I disagree, there have been plenty of other players who have done equally if not worse things than Masoli has and still been able to play. While I don't think it would have been fair to let him transfer to a new school and be able to play this year, I think it is wrong to say he doesn't deserve to ever play again.

Here's my breakdown:

Masoli: Straight A honors student being recruited by Stanford, NW, etc.  Wrong Place/Wrong Time crime, then lied about it.  Went to JUCO, worked very hard, and made it to Oregon.  Another Wrong Place/Wrong Time crime and lied about it again.  Then was caught with weed, possibly covering for the new Oregon starting QB.

Demar Dorsey: Wrong Place/Wrong Time crime (x2), charges dropped.  Admittedly not the caliber of student Masoli was, decided to transfer to a random online HS that doesn't appear to be accredited.  Still hasn't passed NCAA clearinghouse.  Will probably end up going to JUCO.

I'm not trying to go insane about this, but a cursory check of the OP of this reply thread reveals he thought pretty strongly that Demar should get it.  I'm just curious on why he'd be pro-Demar and anti-Masoli.

or was Maoli stealing laptops from fellow students?  To have learned from a mistake and made it onto the path toward graduation/possibly NFL and stray like that seems to me way different from a 16 year old in an environment that promotes disdain for the law making choices that end him up in front of a judge.  With each year of life and each year insdie a mainstream segment of society that vigorously upholds personal property rights through the courts, I hink a kid (especially one as intelligent as Masoli) should be increasingly accountable for abiding by the law.

Stewart Mandel too much (he's just okay, at best) be he had a nice interview and in depth report on Masoli. The thing about the laptop was, he never, or at least he can be proven to have ever, taken anything himself. He showed up to a frat party (he says to "check it out") with a classmate. As he was wandering through, his classmate came down the stairs with some electronics, and told Masoli to take off with him. Masoli was so dumbstruck he didn't know what to do, and did so.

That's his story, and it fits the facts. Now, some people say they saw Masoli at the party with a backpack that night, though others say he did NOT have a backpack. Either way, Masoli claims he didn't and no backpack was ever found. A taken laptop was never located or recovered.

So, could he have been? Yes. But there's zero evidence at all to go against his side of the story wherein his classmate took stuff and he just got freaked out and didn't know how to respond.

Good.  This kid shouldn't have been able to do the things he did at Oregon and then just transfer to another school to play right away.  I'm glad the NCAA came to this decision.

I don't understand why Masoli is taking all the flak from posters here when IMO Ole Miss is the major issue.  Whether Masoli's intentions of bettering himself are pure or not, you can't blame him for trying; however I think it's pretty obvious that this major university's actions were based solely on improving their football team and had nothing to do with the "student" in student athlete.
