Jehu Chesson Senior Highlights

I posted this in the Josh Garnett thread below, but figured this probably deserved its own. Here's Jehu Chesson's senior highlight reel (it uses the same crappy DJ Khaled song as his junior tape, so check your speakers):

Quick take: I still have no idea why he isn't a four-star. He isn't too precise on his routes, but other than that, he looks really good, though I realize these are just highlights. His straight-line speed and jump-ball skills are no joke.

H/T to MGoUser Philbert, who made me aware of this video's newfound existence.

that's definitely on the high side of the 3*'s. Good size, good hands.  Really good vision and running skills for a WR.  Doesn't seem to have that top notch acceleration to really kill people on those bubble screens (ala wes welker, or even kenyon martin).  He's not afraid of contact, so he's probably a decent blocker, gotta work on getting his pad level lower.  Reminds me a little bit of Adrian Arrington, maybe it's just the body type.  Should fit in pretty well with Borges' offense.

I could see this kid getting some time right from the start if he does well in spring and fall practices. I would love to see more warp speed out there...

I love the kid (#55) at 4:04-4:05 on the sideline who does a fist pump after Chesson is tripped up after a 55 yard return.

3 stars be damned.  These coaches know they're doing, and I can't wait to see what the Darboh/Chesson dynamic duo will do for the team over the next 4 years.

I'm not worried about stars.  Mike Hart and David Molk were also 3* rated players.  Also, two current 3* rated recievers are Junior Hemingway and Martavious Odoms.

Hemingway was a blue-chipper to ESPN and Rivals, but a three-star to Scout.  I had to check on that, since I'd always remembered him being rated extremely high across the board.

ESPN had him as the 4th best reciever, so you are right there.  Rivals was probably the lowest on him.

Obviously it would represent the absolute ceiling for the guy (well, for just about any receiver), but I can actually see what Ace is talking about with the Braylon comparison.  Until I looked at the senior highlights, I wouldn't have though so, but Chesson seems to have come a long way.

In terms of background, Braylon was a high 3-star/low 4-star type, IIRC, and had a similar lanky build coming out of high school.  Both Braylon and Chesson have track experience, though I don't think Braylon ran hurdles.

When I first saw Braylon at Michigan, he didn't strike me as particularly explosive, but he managed to eat up some yardage after the catch.  Looking at that highlight film, I don't think Chesson is any slower than Braylon was early in his career.

Anyway, that's not to say he develops at the same rate and wins the Biletnikoff, but for a big, downfield receiver, the only thing Chesson appears to be missing is a bit more strength and elite speed.  I agree that his rating seems strangely low, since if he had both of those attributes in addition to his existing skills he'd look like a damn 5-star.

Glad we got this kid.  Welcome to Michigan, Jehu.

Another nugget on Jehu from our Tim at Rivals -

Jehu's HS coach seems to think there is a ton of upside for this kid, given that he played football / basketball / track for 3 years in high school.  He's not playing basketball this year, but will run track (state 300M hurdles champ).

Once he gives 100% to football - watch out.  He's Adrian Arrington 2.0, imo.
