Jeffrey Godfrey committed to Central Florida

Submitted by Magnus on
Quarterback recruit Jeffrey Godfrey, from Miami Central High School, committed to UCF, along with a couple teammates. He threw for 3,000 yards and 43 TDs this year. With all the talk about Conelius Jones potentially playing defensive back at Michigan, I've wondered if Michigan would continue recruiting quarterbacks. If Jones would indeed play DB, Michigan would still only have 3 scholarship quarterbacks in 2010 (Forcier, Robinson, Gardner). Godfrey is a bit undersized, but I think he has a chance to be a very good college player in the right system.

How many do we really need? Especially when we need a TON of other positions filled with depth. I may be speaking too soon, since we saw what happened when we only had Sheridan to start, but unlike most other positions there can only be 1 QB (traditionally) on the field at once. With Jones there, at least he's a "worst case" option which would make 4 QBs. I would rather get another safety or LB in this class compared to getting another QB. 2 QB's in a class is about as many as you need. There are 2011 and 2012 to get more QB's recruits...right now we need to focus on filling holes.

Rodriguez has stated that he would like to have 5 or 6 scholarship quarterbacks on the roster. With only 3 quarterbacks on the roster, you wouldn't be far from having to burn Gardner's redshirt. And I don't know that Denard Robinson is a long-term answer at QB, so we basically have two true quarterbacks (Forcier and Gardner) and then two ???????s in Jones and Robinson. The situation isn't dire, but it's not really ideal, either.

But, you do that over a period of classes. You don't recruit 5 QB's in one class. 1 or 2 a year is probably ideal. That way you always have 4+ on the roster and only 1 or 2 graduating every year. We don't want to fill all those spots this year and then have a problem 3 or 4 years from now when we have to, again, start a freshman because we had 4 QB's in 1 class. Another thing is you usually can't have 2 highly rated QB's in one class - one with decommitt or transfer. Heck even with Gardner we are cutting it close with Robinson and Forcier in the previous class. Those are 3 very highly rated players in a short time. All three would start at a lot of Div-1 schools almost right away. So I think this is exactly what the coaches want. As we stand - 3 or 4 QB's. In the next two classes we probably add 1-3, so we'll have plenty to keep the depth going. Now, on the other hand the situation IS dire on the defense. Especially with Warren leaving we now have a problem where we are going to have to start some pretty young guys on defense - which means the more the better. Unlike at QB - having 5+ DB's in the class is going to do wonders for the competition and performance of the secondary (hopefully). This may be the first year where we don't have to convert RB's into CB's to fill depth problems.

I'm not suggesting that we recruit five quarterbacks in one class. I'm not even suggesting that we should recruit four. Or even three. I said that *IF* Conelius Jones really is a defensive back, then that only gives us three. And if you consider the fact that Denard Robinson might eventually switch positions, that only gives us two.

All I'm saying is that both would be able to switch back if it did end up getting that bad. We do have 4 players that can play QB. Just 1-2 of them won't be consistently practicing at QB. Robinson would always be able to make the easy switch. He has at least a year of QB practice no matter what.

It would take Robinson, Gardner and Forcier to get injured before Jones would even be close to seeing the field. Robinson making the move would be easy, like I said, because he has a year already at QB and most likely will compete this year for the spot before he was to (maybe) get moved to another position. I would assume that if 2 of the 3 got injured they would move Jones over that week to be the #2 or #3 QB. It's HIGHLY unlikely that 2 guys get injured in 1 game at QB and even in the worst case scenario we have Sheridan who at least knows the offense for 1 game. There would never be a situation where 3 or 4 guys went down in 1 game. Jones would have a minimum of 1 week to practice at QB and unless the 3rd string got injured that week he would probably have even more. Heck look at what Purdue did to us last year with their converted RB. What I'm getting to is that there are 3 scholarship QB's ahead of him at least, then Nick Sheridan AKA (death). It would take a lot for him to sniff the field and if he did he would in all likely scenarios have more than 1 week of practice.

Sheridan might not be here next year, and Justin Siller was an exception to the rule. Robinson's quarterbacking was abysmal against anyone not named Baby Seal University. Regardless, 2 or 3 true quarterbacks on a roster are too few. I'm not saying it will hurt us this year, but if any coach ever made a consistent habit of keeping only a couple quarterbacks on the squad, it would eventually bite him in the ass.

but when you have walk-ons in the secondary it's probably best to use that scholarship elsewhere. We have 4 QB's + sheridan. There probably won't come a situation where we get to Sheridan. Heck even getting to Gardner would be unlikely. I would like to see how many 3rd and 4th string QB's played this year in ALL div-1a football because of injuries to the 2nd and 1st.

He committed to USF about a week ago, and now switched his committment to their rival. He wants to "start right away." With the competition at QB at UM, I don't think we ever stood a chance. Not to mention our scholi limits.

Magnus, do you know who we are after in the 2011 class or is it too early. I checked rivals and I see that Braxton Miller is the only one with an offer from us. Lets just steal him osu.
