Just to clarify, when the razorbacks.com article says, "Oh, and he also hired his mistress to work in the athletic department," it's referring to Petrino hiring his mistress, not Long. We don't yet know whether Long has hired his mistress for any positions in the Arkansas athletic department. Or whether he has a mistress. I probably should have said that first...

I've heard his name mentioned before on this site. Others are certainly more obvious and I think Long was more of a pipedream type of hire that no one really knows if it'd work or not but in theory it sounds like he'd fit well. I do think having Michigan ties might help to restore the old guard a bit (or it could not...as you referenced). I think either of the 2 you mentioned or Long would be excellent gets.

That would be rather wrong.

"He began his career in college athletic administration at Michigan, hired by legendary coach and athletics director, the late Bo Schembechler. During his seasons with the Wolverines, Long was promoted through a series of posts to the position of associate athletics director."

His wife is also originally from Ann Arbor.

From the Univ. of Pittsburgh website when he was hired there:

"The majority of his career in collegiate athletic administration, though, was spent at the University of Michigan. Hired by legendary coach and athletic director Bo Schembechler, Long elevated through a number of administrative posts at Michigan before ultimately reaching associate athletic director."

And also he married a woman from Ann Arbor, so another good thing.

Only knock would be that he hired this guy at Arkansas....

/jk - looks like he would be a great hire AND his ties to the CFP sure could not hurt.

I don't know the full details, but the short version was that he is a very good guy, cares tremendously about academics, but cratered their non-hockey athletics.  Bates inherited Hoeppner (who left for Indiana after Roethlisberger's big year), and then hired Shane Montgomery, Mike Haywood, and Don Treadwell.  I think they had two winning seasons spread over the eight seasons that group coached Miami.

An AD's job at the Michigan level is very complex, but as Bo said many years ago, ultimately success or failure for any Michigan AD is going to come down to who they hire for head football coach. That Miami track record is not particularly encouraging.

How dare you not be way too informed about the AD goings-on.

He never wanted to be permanent AD.  He announced that he was stepping down a few months ago.

Personally, I hope we give that Toys-R-Us guy a chance.  Dan something or other.  He played football under Bo and was a provost or something at the university.  Seems like a class act.

It's common sense, really:

-If he runs Toys-R-Us, he knows toys, so he's certainly good with kids.

-If he is good with kids, he'll definitely be able to connect with the young students and student athletes at UM.

-If he can connect with students and athletes, he'll naturally form a good relationship with them and reasonably cater to their needs and desires.

We'd be stupid not to hire him, in all honesty.

Don't know anything about Jeff Long but didn't it take the motorcycle incident for him to fire Pettrino when the entire campus knew he was ...eh hem...riding a volleyball player around?  Seems like a good AD would sniff that out before it became natiional news and public embarassment for the Universtiy.   And he hired BERT so that's a strike against him, right?

Otherwise I'm sure he'd be a great hire. Seems like there are better candidates though.

That's hasty speculation and uninformed. Long is the best AD out there and is very highly respected. He is also a Michigan Man, which is a good thing despite past neg posts on MGoBlog. Of course so do Hackett and Wheatley (see Wheatley's recent players post) and others now use Michigan Man as a respected term.

Is Jeff long responsible for New Years Eve CFP semi-finals? If so I don't want him anywhere near our program. It's a decision that reminds me of (though not on the same level as) Maryland + Rut in the BT...

in what was a competitive game until Clemson scored w/ 4:07 in the 3rd to make it 30-17, then again w/ 10:48 in the 4th to make it 37-17.

MSU, on the other hand, couldn't do anything on offense and when they went into halftime down 10-0, it seemed over.  When Bama scored on its first possession of the 2nd half at 10:36 in the 3rd to go up 17-0, it was almost surely over.

anyone who was pushing for the playoffs on NYE is unbelievably short-sighted and stubborn.  I understand that part of the problem is the Orange and Rose Bowls digging their heels in, but c'mon guys, Jan 2nd was wide open for the taking.   You aren't going to turn NYE isn't your "tradition".  Unless your "tradition" is ridiculously terrible ratings and people confused about why the biggest games of the year are on TV during a day that no one wants to watch football.

Dunno if Long had any role in this though. Don't recall hearing his name attached to it.

Yeah, it does seem to be a ridiculously bad decision for this year at a minimum.  You can't create a "tradition" when it doesn't occur every third year anyway.  Might as well have taken advantage of the calendar quirk and played the semifinals on the 2nd.  It was only a saturday, not like the sport has any special ties to that day of the week or anything...

The OP's title leaves out the detail that he is chairman of the CFP selection committee, not the entire CFP.  I don't believe this committee has had anything to do with the structure of the CFP, just selecting the four participants and putting out the weekly rankings.

I think you have to thank the individual bowls and the conference heads for the entire structure, including the decision to hold the second and third biggest games of the year on a holiday universally known for being out at parties (or if you are watch TV, watching a crappy count down show).
