Jayru Campbell to MSU

Submitted by Allin4Blue on

Per the twitters.  No Michigan offer and there really was no mutual interest.  This kid hails from our Cass Tech pipeline that will likely be owned by our Little Brother in 2015.

Good luck to the kid, but my overall reaction is "meh." No offer, wasn't going to get one and has not developed to the point he would have been on Michigan's radar.

There have been a handful of QBs M has shown interest in or have made a priority outside of the one they've offered. Jayru is not one of them, in fact he was upset about that. So now he's at MSU.

I'm not saying he sucks or anything, but it's unlikely he was going to get an offer because the coaches haven't wanted pursued him the way they have others.

It's possible that the coaches are not going to offer any more QBs until Signing Day, which means they will be able to watch him for his entire junior season before making a decision on whether or not to offer.

There's no way that anyone can predict right now if he will or will not eventually get a Michigan offer.

that after his sophomore that is how people/coaches feel but he's got 2 more years to develope.  Michael Jordan didn't even make the varsity basketball as a sophomore in high school.  Two years is a lot of time for someone to grow and improve.  Heck, if he blows up and becomes really good, there'll be a ton of coaches knocking on his door to see how solid that commitment is to Sparty.

This pickup will Keep Sparty interesting if they can continue to recruit/develop the way they have prior.

I think the bigger picture is if Narduzzi does leave after 2013, Sparty is going to ironically have to rest on this kid's scrambling ability to control games and run Denard-type plays instead of relying on their defense to shut teams down.

That's why I put the caveat in parentheses. The comment above refered to Campbell as "MAC level" and Alabama wouldn't be showing any interest at all in him if that were true.

How many times does someone on this blog talk about how different schools have "shown interest" in order to hype up an M prospect? That needs to go both ways and if it doesn't, it's sour grapes.

have assumed Campbell was a scrambler when, as others have pointed out, he clearly is not.   I have to say I am pretty embarrassed by stereotyping this kid because of his ethnicity. My apologies for being a lazy douche.

Good for Sparty. It is good to keep quality talent in the B1G footprint. I wish him well in all of his games except when he is playing us. Hopefully this doesn't impact our pipeline status with Cass Tech.

This kind of scares me for the future. He seems to be the type of person that has the presence and potential to elevate a team to the next level just by adding himself (god that was worded so terribly). For example, Cam Newton, RGIII, etc. who knows if that will happen, but if so, it's not going to be fun watching MSU get the spotlight and be a tough competitor during that team. Haha

Alabama, Wisconsin, Notre Dame and MSU on this kid's offer list.

Campbell has a powerful arm and is tall/lanky guy. I think it's a big mistake to underestimate or discount him.  Watch.  He'll probably have a blow out, kick-ass senior year too.

I wish him good luck of course, but hope that somehow Borges will see the potential and come 2015 Jayru can be turned over to the good guys.

After watching Tech play last year I honestly wonder if they aren't recruiting him as a running back with occasional looks as a wildcat qb, and only a situational passer. That's pretty much how he was used last year, more rushes than passes in the games I saw.

Campbell has great potential.  His committment will mean a lot for MSU.

As for the ramifications it has for us, I'm torn.  On the one hand, I think Rosen is a superior quarterback to Campbell.  That being said it doesn't look like Rosen is coming here.  That's not good, because I wouldn't have been disappointed to see Campbell in a U of M uniform at all.

The state of Michigan has two players I badly want in 2015 - Cole and Alabi.  I would also like Weber, and I would have liked Stallworth, but those are second-tier needs.  Campbell was probably a tier below that, although we can't afford to swing and miss at bigger QB targets in 2015.

Not much zip on his passes.  They all seem to be you outrun the coverage and I'll throw it up really high and let you run under it.  Still, it is tough to see the leader (read QB) of one of our pipeline schools commit to an instate rival.  This plus Blackwell should make for some interesting Cass Tech recruiting battles in the next few years.

People need to chill out about this affecting the pipeline. Even all the Cass Tech kids to come here did not sway Webb. Also, other Cass kids have gone elsewhere (mostly because they did not have a UofM offer but still). Kids will go to the school that is best for them in the end. Michigan just has had a head start in the past and maybe MSU and other school start to catch up a bit but Michigan will get a number of Cass Tech kids in the future.

Michigan got a couple kids from Glenville but I am no more confident than I was a couple years ago to get high level players from there.

Who cares if he didn't have an offer? My point is that I bet Blackwell is helping to steer more kids to MSU (they received another tentative commit yesterday).

Quote from Wilcher: "Me and Curtis have always had a great working relationship,” Wilcher said. “I think he’s already made an impact, cause all the kids are gonna gravitate towards him. I won’t be surprised if some kids you thought may go to Michigan or Ohio State might end up going to Michigan State.”

From the tape that I have seen, Jayru looks like an excellent athlete, but his mechanics and arm strength are seriously flawed.  Unless he can correct those things, he may end up at TE for the Spartans.  Good get for them.  Michigan would have no place for him on the roster.
