I Googled "Les Miles punter jersey numbers" and "LSU punter jersey numbers" and I got nothing.

But it wouldn't shock me if Les did this...if so, I doubt they were all punters.

Why not put a RS freshman QB or WR who's buried on the depth chart for a year in the same number as a punter and call him a punter?

I'd rather run a fake punt pass with Wilton Speight or a fake punt run with Bo Dever than just another punter who can throw or run.

Players’ Numbering
ARTICLE 2
a. All players shall be numbered 1 through 99. Any number preceded by zero (“0’’) is illegal.
b. No two players of the same team shall participate in the same down wearing identical numbers.
c. Markings in the vicinity of the numbers are not permitted.
PENALTY [a-c] - Live-ball foul. Five yards from the previous spot.

d. When a player enters the game after changing his jersey number, he must report to the referee, who then informs the opposing head coach and announces the change. A player  who enters the game after changing his number and does not report commits a foul for unsportsmanlike conduct.
e. Two players playing the same position may not wear the same number during the game.
PENALTY [d-e] - Live-ball foul, unsportsmanlike conduct charged to the team. 15 yards from the previous spot. Flagrant offenders shall be disqualified.

OFFENSIVE LINEMAN
At least five linemen must wear jerseys numbered 50 through 79

two players will not have the same number if they both are offensive or defensive players. There would always be the opportunity for them to be on the field at the same time given any number of situations.

Players wearing the same number are always playing on different sides of the ball, then it still has to be a concern when it comes to special teams play. They can not be on the field at the same time ever.

How do people still not get this? There's no rule that says two offensive players can't have the same number. They just can't be on the field at the same time. I can't imagine Bellomy getting on the field any time soon, so I don't think it'll be a problem.

IF they play the same position...however, that is not the case in this instance.

But you cannot have two WR #1's...however, you CAN have a QB #1 and a WR #1 if they're not on the field at the same time.

If you wanted to trick someone on offense, you put your backup QB in the same number as your star RB/WR (or vice versa)...then you pull the star and put the backup in trying to trick the defense into thinking your star RB/WR is playing QB or your star QB is playing RB/WR.

Both offensive and defensive players are on special teams. Even if you didn't allow the same number on the "same side of the ball" you could end up with duplicate numbers on the field if you didn't have the not on the field at the same time rule.

The rule states: " Two players playing the same position may not wear the same number during the game."

This suggests to me that it's not just at the same time, but at any point during the game. This means that if you have 2 QB's who are number 8, one can't start the first half wearing #8 and the other, also wearing #8, start the second half. Because they are the same position, they must wear different numbers if they both want to appear in the game, even if it is not at the same time.
