Jay Feely Opines on RichRod & Dave Brandon

Submitted by MGoShoe on
Don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger. Jay Feely spoke to the U-M Southwest Florida Club and opined on various topics including RichRod and Dave Brandon.
Feely did not offer the same glowing support to Rodriguez or his tenure at Michigan, instead voicing support [for] Rodriguez’s boss, first-year athletic director David Brandon. “The Michigan faithful have confidence in David Brandon, that he understands what it takes and what it means to be a Michigan man and I think that Dave will make the right decision either way,” Feely said.
His appearance was meant to raise funds for the UMHS.
A member of coach Lloyd Carr’s 1997 national title team, Feely was in Naples not only to talk football but to generate funds for the Michigan Mott Children and Women’s hospital in Ann Arbor. Feely said he can recall visiting patients when he was a student, along with a certain Heisman trophy winner who also remains active in the cause. “Charles Woodson donated $2 million of his own money, which was just incredible,” Feely said.

The reporter certainly makes that conclusion, but there was nothing quoted from Feely that could be perceived as a slam on Rodriguez in my Epinion. This hit parade is getting a little ridiculous. Did ND players get this third degree treatment about Fat Charlie when it was clear that he was on the hot seat? This stuff has really just taken on a life of its own.

But do you mean to say that you're not taking responsiblity for what Jay Feely thinks? Someone has to keep him under control. If not you, who? If not now, when?

These guys can all line up at the mic and say what they want,it says more about them than RRod or Michigan....somebody once said "I can forgive but I will never forget". I have bought more Michigan gear in the last couple of years than anytime ever.

...seems to indicate that a comment about RichRod was made, but doesn't quote Feely. I think it's safe to say it's a poorly written article. My "don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger" comment was meant to deflect criticism for posting another story about an ex-player providing his opinion on the current state of the program. I agree in advance with anyone who thinks these are becoming somewhat tiresome, but I do believe that most MGoBlogizens believe these items are newsworthy.

The only opinion of RRod that matters is that of his players and David Brandon. As former players I am sure they are concerned with the state of UM football but if they could just leave this topic alone for awhile and let it cool down that would be just fine with me.

all of the RichRod stuff goes away with one word - WIN. If he doesn't win, then he will have placed his fate in the hands of David Brandon. I happen to think that in two years, all of this garbage will be a "long gone memory." If we continue to see improvement on the field (and off of it), Coach Rod is going to be fine. Major college football is a fickle business-it is all about winning.

The writer is a lot more critical of RR than Feely was. The only good side to all of the bullshit is that, as they were when Michigan was 4-0, the people in the media who are being critical of RR now are the same ones who will be saying "I told you so" when Michigan makes it all the way back. Except, of course, for the Three Stooges over at the freep, but once things turn around they will become pure entertainment for Wolverine fans who like to laugh at pompous "reporters" revealing themselves to the world as idiots.

current players. They have something to prove and I wait till they bring it this year. It is embarrasing hearing past players make these comments. What value does it bring??? I'm not happy either but I'm not out there acting like a fool complaining ... esp. to the media.

even if it doesn't shed much light one way or the other, I'm still interested to read it. That being said, this is a horrrrrible piece of sports journalism, which means it's typical today. There's absolutely nothing in anything Feely is quoted as saying that is critical of RR. The writer is either pulling crap out of his ass and throwing it on the wall, or he's refusing to put a critical comment by Feely in the article. I'd bet my mortgage payment it's the former.

because one day in the not-so-distant future, all of these athletes and fans and media who have been attacking RichRod relentlessly for the better part of two years are going to have to eat their words. People who aren't backing RichRod are not true Michigan men (or women) IME. Anything negative spoken about RichRod by fans or alum only hurts the program, and it is definitely in the PROGRAM'S best interest for RichRod to have success. If he fails here we will be in even deeper over our heads than we are now, and I am one who believes that the only thing that can stop him from having success is the Michigan faithful not uniting and getting behind him. It's his only hurdle. Hopefully he can clear it.

(noun) 1 : an idea, belief or belief system, or pattern of behavior that spreads throughout a culture either vertically by cultural inheritance (as by parents to children) or horizontally by cultural acquisition (as by peers, information media, and entertainment media) 2 : a pervasive thought or thought pattern that replicates itself via cultural means; a parasitic code, a virus of the mind especially contagious to children and the impressionable 3 : the fundamental unit of information, analogous to the gene in emerging evolutionary theory of culture - meme pool (n.) : all memes of a culture or individual - memetic (adj.) : relating to memes - memetics (n.) : the study of memes 4 : in blogspeak, an idea that is spread from blog to blog 5 : an internet information generator, especially of random or contentless information "Rich Rodriguez must win X games next year." = The Rich Rodriguez meme. Anybody know how many Michigan games Jay Feely has attended in the last two years? Anybody know how many team practices under coach Rodriguez that Jay Feely has seen? I don't mean to be too hard on Jay Feely. After all, what did he say that was so horrible? Not much. One might think that before a reporter would read those thoughts into Jay Feely's mind (it may be a Vulcan thing, and I just wouldn't understand), those might be a couple of relevant questions. One might also think that before interpreting any lack of comment about Rodriguez, a reporter might want to check it out directly before putting such a presumption into print. MEMO To: All Michigan football alumni in the NFL Re: Reporters asking you about Rich Rodriguez Date: For the foreseeable future ___________________________________ Remember, you have the right to remain silent. You have the right to an attorney, an agent, or at least a capable public relations advisor. Anything you say, can and will be used against Rich Rodriguez by most of the media which seems to follow the lead of the virulently anti-Rodriguez Detroit Free Press. If you waive this right, be aware that what you say, and indeed what you don't say, can and will be interpreted to undermine Head Coach Rodriguez and the football program that put you where you are today.
