Well Franklin is a bit of douche and, in his short time at Penn State, has brought some of his SEC-style recruiting techniques to the Big Ten so "picks up" isn't too off...

having the recruit's name in the subject is optimal

Garrett Taylor has changed his mind before, he can change it again. It's not over until he signs a LOI.

Franklin's a snake in the grass. But his day is coming. When he's fired in 2018 we'll repay the favor.
November 30th, 2014 at 5:01 PM ^
I mean, we swiped CB Ross Douglas from PSU a couple years back...not like they aren't returning a favor themselves
Taylor left and committed to PSU of his own free will

I'm not speaking so much of this particular decommitment as about him in general.

Franklin is the king of douche bags for this great quote...
"I've been saying it for a long time, I will not hire an assistant until I see his wife. If she looks the part and she's a D1 recruit, then you got a chance to get hired."
I wonder if he judges recruits the same way???

Considering that recruiting is a sales position, I actually see where he's coming from with the hot wife comment. If you can't convince an attractive woman to marry you, chances are pretty good that you wouldn't be able to convince a 17 year old with 25 other suitors to play football for you.

Evolutionarily sound argument.

are not the same thing. Franklin appears to be both.

Ann Arbor is more of a dumpster fire right now than PSU. Who would have ever thought this...
November 30th, 2014 at 4:56 PM ^
OSU was a dumpster fire and they fixed it quickly by getting Meyer. We can do the same thing with the right coaching hire.
November 30th, 2014 at 5:03 PM ^
No they weren't. They had one bad year.
November 30th, 2014 at 5:13 PM ^
it was better than 3 of our bad years.
November 30th, 2014 at 5:36 PM ^
Ohio State just had a bunch of dead weight on their coaching staff. Jim Tressel did their jobs for so long when he got fired they had no idea what to do.

Yup, I've said this recently too. USC and Ohio State got hit with sanctions and are in better shape than Michigan. Barring a home run hire in Ann Arbor, Penn State eventually will be as well. Thanks, Bill Martin and Dave Brandon!

Actually UM has one more win than PSU over the last four years -- but the truth is close enough to make your point.
UM: 11 + 8 + 7 + 5 = 31
PSU: 9 + 8 + 7 + 6 = 30

How is this any different from RR poaching players? This is a non issue.

With the exception of 2-3 players, I've written most of this class off. If we can get a coach by week 1 or 2 of January, we may be able poach a few ourselves.

Then again, he did take Vanderbilt to bowls all three years he was there (granted, they backed into the Liberty Bowl with a 6-6 record in 2011), but at a program where going to bowls in consecutive years is somewhere up there with inventing warp drive and reanimating the dead, it was not a bad job by any means.
Then, of course, there was this year....point taken.

There will be a lot more of this until a coach is locked in. More often than not, recruits sign with a school because they like what the coaching staff told them or because the "bagman" is better than at other schools. Michigan is already at a handicap not using a bagman. Now their recruits know that the coach they wanted to play for is out the door.
Michigan needs to make the hire quickly and make the right hire. I don't know if they can afford for this class to really suck. They need to generate the kind of excitement that opens doors to recruits' homes and makes them and their parents optimistic about the future at the University of Michigan.
