James Brewer OT from IU

Submitted by Michigan4Life on

Indiana, from what I've been told has another 1st round caliber OT(like Rodger Saffold who did a decent job against Brandon Graham), in James Brewer.  Apparently, James Brewer has been more impressive than Saffold which is a high praise considering that Saffold was taken in 1st pick of 2nd round.  The pass rush has to come from the middle and the other side which means Martin and RVB has to put pressure on Chappel.

because I haven't seen a lick of snap from IU.  I haven't really paid much attention to IU except for last year game and a few highlights where I focused on Saffold when I heard that he is considered to be a 1st rounder which surprises me because I didn't think IU has that kind of OT on the roster.  I've been told that Brewer has been extremely impressive.  If he can translate it against Michigan then Michigan needs to find pass rush from somewhere else or overload on one side.  We'll see over the season to see if he deserves the mention from a pro scout.

IU has played:

  • a crappy FCS team (Towson)
  • a team in only its second year of full-on FBS status & losers of 24 straight (WKU)
  • a horrible MAC team & easily a bottom-5 outfit in FBS (Akron)

Anything they've accomplished thus far should be taken with a Taylor Lewan-sized grain of salt.

If you are going to make that argument....

Michigan has played

a vastly overrated -  U-Conn

a 1-3 Notre Dame team

squeaked by U-Mass and

beat up on a bad M.A.C. team.

So that goes both ways.   Remember, Blue was 4-0 last year too.   They have looked better this year, but their true tests haven't really started yet.   Michigan can't take any Big Ten team lightly, Indiana almost beat them last year and they lost to bad Illinois and Purdue teams.

Anyone on Michigan's schedule beats anyone Indiana has played so far.  I'd also venture to say that Notre Dame is probably a Top 30-40 team, but lost two heartbreakers to fringe Top 25 teams and got physically dominated by a really good Stanford team.

Also, Indiana's defense looks a lot like Bowling Green's did once Denard left the game.  Michigan is going to put up a lot of points on Saturday.  They may not stop Indiana much, but they'll score.

Aside from Bowling Green, I would say with confidence that anyone we've played thus far would defeat the Hoosiers.  As for schedules, do you really want to compare UCONN, ND, and UMASS to Akron, WKU, and Towson? That's two respectable FBS schools that are better than their records indicate, and one of the best FCS programs versus three teams that are as bad as it gets in their respective division...again, are you sure you want to make that comparison?

are working so hard to discount the info offered. Yeah, we're skeptical of IU's play so far against patsy opponents. But surely the person who offered the info was looking beyond that.

Anyway, thanks for the info, it'll help me focus on line play, and it'll be interested to see how those matchups play out.

Anyone I've talked to has said Brewer is at best a borderline top 10 senior tackle.  He could show improved play, but he has slow feet and doesn't have much initial punch.  He's probably one of the better senior tackles in the Big 10, I'll give you that, but right now he's probably a 3rd round pick at best.

it's one person's opinion, albeit a scout.  There could be numerous of scouts who can have the same view as your post.  Scouting is an inexact science because there are so many factors/variables that could take account into evaluating prospects.  If scouting is so easy, Tom Brady would be a 1st round pick, there wouldn't be a ton of busts(*cough* Millen *cough*) in the first round.

Your post could very well be correct, but I'm just putting this info because I thought that it was interesting and since Michigan will play against Indiana, it could be an useful info for us fans.
