Not much of a surprise here.

I actually had to go out of my way to google when the trophy ceremony was.
December 14th, 2013 at 11:06 PM ^
Yeah, I tohught it was normally closer to the National Championship Game. Was pretty surprised it was before all the bowl games.

Where the kid wins then has to go on all the trips and shows, etc., get's fat and lazy and misses practice, gets a big head then stinks it up in the bowl game?
December 14th, 2013 at 9:09 PM ^
Congrats to him. Very good season by that young, young man. I hope he's innocent of any wrongdoings he's been "accused" of as he seems like a very decent and respectable person. They all seem like good, young men. And I agree with Jordan, Chicago style is the way to go!

For now, until everything surrounding his situation is answered, I only have one opinion of him: The kid is a damn fine football player. When the truth about what he did or didn't do comes out, then I can form an educated opinion of him as a person, but whatever that opinion may end up being, it won't have any effect whatsoever on my aforementioned one above.
December 14th, 2013 at 9:09 PM ^
Good for him.
Now it's time to watch a movie about those outstanding Ohio boys, Maurice Clarett and Jim Tressel. Totally moral people there!

I went through the last 7 winners
Winner/year | Year (college) | Years starting |
Jameis Winston (2013) | RS Fr. | 1st year |
Johnny Manziel (2012) | RS Fr. | 1st year |
RGIII (2011) | Jr. | 3rd year |
Cam Newton (2010) | Jr. | 1st year (complicated) |
Mark Ingram (2009) | So. | 1st year |
Sam Bradford (2008) | So. | 2nd year |
Tim Tebow (2007) | So. | 1st year |
5 of last 7 winners were first year starters (although Ingram and Tebow got some playing time during their freshman years and Cam Newton had a complicated history before coming to Auburn).
December 14th, 2013 at 9:36 PM ^
And 6 of the last 7 were QBs and of those, 5 are known as much or more for their scrambling / running abiltity than their passing.
December 14th, 2013 at 9:42 PM ^
Eh, 4 are more rushers than passers, neither Winston and Bradford aren't/weren't big scramblers.
But I definitely think that dual threat quarterbacks are bigger threats early in their career before opposing defenses figure out their tendencies.
December 14th, 2013 at 11:15 PM ^
If you watch the Michigan-Florida bowl game from the 2007 season, you will see a "Cameron Newton" on one of the graphics...and then went on his merry way to JUCO or whatever before ending up at Auburn.
December 14th, 2013 at 9:12 PM ^
I'm sure he was caught in the moment, but he didn't shake hands, or even acknowledge the other candidates once they announced he won. Pretty awkward
December 14th, 2013 at 9:14 PM ^
It was kind of awkward. He seemed in a hurry to hug his parents.
December 14th, 2013 at 9:16 PM ^
Once I saw him go to his parents I thought "Ok he's gonna go shake their hands now" and he walked right past them like they werent there.
December 14th, 2013 at 9:16 PM ^
Once you're a noble you no longer shake hands with the serfs...
December 14th, 2013 at 9:30 PM ^
That's Johnny Football he snubbed there...
Serious etiquette issue.

A controversy to be dealt with at the Nissan Heisman House.

The margin was considerable. Here are the top five this year -
Jameis Winston - 2,205 votes
AJ McCarron - 704 votes
Jordan Lynch - 558 votes
Andre Williams - 480 votes
Johnny Manziel - 441 votes
There was one tweet, I believe, that said this would be the seventh largest margin in Heisman history.
December 14th, 2013 at 9:35 PM ^
It likely would have been a lot larger, as it appears like he was left off of 115 ballots entirely. (source). Controversy definitely affected the votes, but it was still an landslide victory.

Agree with turd ferguson, so hard to decide whether to root for him or not. He very well may have raped a woman. Tough to tell. I'll stay indifferent for now.
P.S. - Shot in the dark, but are you the turd ferguson from the FCP site?
December 14th, 2013 at 9:28 PM ^
The crappy thing about staying indifferent with someone like Winston is that you essentially know you're wrong. While there's a lot of possible middle ground, chances are that he's either a victim (deserving of sympathy) or a rapist (deserving of scorn). Playing the middle is unsatisfying to me - even if it's the most reasonable perspective - because it almost certainly is wrong.
December 16th, 2013 at 12:39 PM ^
OFF their ballots all together! By doing so they made a statement!

December 14th, 2013 at 9:23 PM ^
I wonder how many votes McCarron lost because of that one play vs Auburn.
December 14th, 2013 at 9:24 PM ^
I almost feel like he got more because they lost. I don't know how to explain it exactly, but them losing kind of made him look better. Shattered the idea that he was sailing an unsinkable ship, if that makes any sense.
December 14th, 2013 at 9:36 PM ^
I can see that being the case, but being undefeated couldn't have hurt his chances.
December 14th, 2013 at 9:45 PM ^
I basically agree. I can't really prove my point. I just always had the feeling McCarron was hurt by the perception anybody could be doing what he was doing for Alabama, which is certainly not the case.
December 14th, 2013 at 9:28 PM ^
I've always felt McCarron's significance to Alabama's success was underrated. The guy was clutch.
December 14th, 2013 at 10:31 PM ^
His problem has always been that guys before him at Alabama have done reasonably well, and with all the talent they have it doesn't feel like he has had to "earn" it like other guys. I agree it is unfair, since it's not like Winston is playing with a bunch of MAC guys out there.

If allegations false: Sweet, he earned it
If allegations true: Unfortunate
December 14th, 2013 at 9:45 PM ^
The problem is, we'll probably never know, unless the civil case provides some more clarity. So it'll likely have to be shrouded in a ton of uncertainty.
December 14th, 2013 at 9:48 PM ^
I agree, we'll probably never know unless something unforeseen unfolds. I do wonder how the Heisman committee looks if he is later found to have committed rape and they awarded him the Heisman on the tail end of the allegations. It would tarnish the award for a while.
December 14th, 2013 at 9:53 PM ^
rape to taking ncaa violations, but...
retroactively removing heismans has been done before, and i don't think it really tarnishes the award at all.
December 14th, 2013 at 10:02 PM ^
If anything, it gives it more credibiltiy. If it turns out Winston did rape the girl, I would feel bad for whoever did not win the award. If this was the case and he if he was honest from the beginning, one of the other finalists would have been very deserving, and would miss out on the award because of something totally unrelated to them.
December 14th, 2013 at 10:30 PM ^
December 14th, 2013 at 10:32 PM ^
Technically, he doesn't have it anymore. But yeah, unless they find him guilty I think he'll keep it.
December 14th, 2013 at 9:54 PM ^
How can the Heisman committee be criticized since they made their decision AFTER the prosecutor said there was not enough evidence of a crime being committed ?
Should they have launched their own investigation?
December 15th, 2013 at 10:43 AM ^
You have Cam, whom even if you don't believe knew his dad was taking money (hah!), still stole a laptop and was going to get kicked out of Florida for cheating.
Manziel, who also almost definitely took some money for the autographs, has had multiple DUI type incidents and bar fights, was almost kicked out of Texas A&M before his game.
And then Winston, who should have probably been tried for rape a year ago (note I said tried, not convicted). It's really hard to judge him, but all the official reports made it sond a heck of a lot like date rape since the girl was too intoxicated to even know where she was. But his local police squashed the case for a year and hey Heisman!
They were all most likely the best player each year, but they just need to get the 'off the field excellence and integrity' or whatever line out of the Heisman criteria and call it the "best, most popular player award" like it really is.
