Jameis Winston to visit OSU

Submitted by jokenjin on

Looks like the Urban Meyer effect is starting fast: Jameis Winston, who was/is committed to Florida State, will be taking an official to Ohio. I will be very interested to see which recruits he is able to poach away from other schools.

I want Hoke and Meyer to start a new 10 year war. That we win decisively.

We should have no illusion about that.  Michigan just can't let him sew up the Ohio border like Tressel did.

As for players he'll steal, I'll bet two bits that Sevon Pittman ends up at OSU.

Winston is from Bama, I'll be curious to see how much Meyer recruits the south. If he does recruit it heavily, thats good and bad. Good because it leaves Ohio open for Hoke (who will also be able to recruit nationally), but bad because traditionally more talent comes from the south. More good than bad, imo.

I'm thinking more bad then good. It is tough to say how effectively Hoke will be able to recruit Ohio now that Urban is there. We have to remember the NCAA issues were able to get Michigan in the door with several prospects. I think we will still be able to poach talented guys from Ohio, but it is going to be tough. Plus add Urban snagging some top-ranked guys from the South. Tough to compete with. Hopefully Hoke and co can hit the West Coast and pull some more talented guys from there like Magnusson.

Big deal, they already have Braxton Miller. All this trepidation about Urb is getting to me. We have his defensive coordinator and best recruiter. If he burned out at Florida, good luck lasting at OSU. All this fear and loathing is probably very similar to what fans of other schools thought about us and Rich Rodriguez. All it takes is one GERG and the whole thing could go kablooey.

This dude is the real deal.... Him in Ohio is a very scary thought.... He has talent that needs to be used now, and with Miller I don't see why he would want to go to Ohio, when he can pretty much start right away in Talahassee.

He is going to get talent...I'm pretty convinced that Meyer knows what kind of sanctions are coming down the pike.

Pretty sure emmert told his buddy Gee it wont be that bad at all and with urban at ohio the ncaa only can see the dollar signs it will generate. Sad state of affairs for the ncaa these days.

As long as Hoke and Co. continue to pull in top 10 classes and we continue to recruit well in Ohio I am not concerned with who Meyer is able to pull in. He always has been a great recruiter so a lot of talented players are going to make the choice to play for him. We just need to keep step for step in terms of talent and we'll be just fine.

Ya, sorry to be such a Negative Nancy, but even Bollman had a freshman QB throwing pretty well against us...don't want to think about what it might have been if he had been throwing a little better (although on one of the wide-open overthrows they scored anyways...something Spielman and everyone else failed to mention). Someone in the Diggs thread said they want to see Diggs at TSIO just so we can beat him...but an upperclass Winston throwing to an upperclass Diggs is pretty intimidating.

That Winston would consider ohio with Miller everything but a guaranteed lock to be the starter in columbus for the next three years. I just don't see Urban pulling this one off. No way he goes to ohio and sits that long.

not Urban's.  There is little doubt that Urban is selling that line to the kid and promising him the opportunity to compete for the starting spot.

Blue chips pick schools all the time with young returning starters on the roster.  Hell, Gardner came to Michigan when we had Tate and Denard.  I find it amusing that some of you can't accept that Winston very well might end up at OSU.

That's a little different. Miller was the number one rated qb coming outta high school last year, and now Winston is (both according to Rivals). When Devin committed, it was in the midst of our mid-season collapse with Tate at the helm, and Denard had shown nothing compared to what he is now. Apparently you didn't see Urban Meyer's press conference when he was announced as head coach, and said that meeting Braxton Miller was the highlight of his day. Obviously Miller was Tressel's recruit, but Urban has made it fully clear that Miller is now his guy. Braxton Miller will be the starter in columbus for the next three years, and I do not now Jamies Winston, but I just don't see him going and sitting on the bench for three years when he could be the heir apparent to Manuel after one year. Hell, let's not forget that he is one of the top baseball prospects in the country too. Why would he sit in columbus for three years when he could make millions playing baseball. I am not saying he will for sure not go there, but I think it's a safe bet to say it is an extremely small chance that he does once you factor everything in.

Logically you are completely correct, but sometimes crazy things happen. Remember Crist following Clausen to ND. Odd, but sometimes things happen. That being said, I doubt he wants to go somewhere were he has to play second fiddle for at least two years.

And I never said he won't for sure go to ohio. I just think with the presence of Miller, and Winston's potential as a baseball prospect, it is extremely unlikely Meyer could pull this off. I agree anything can happen, but my argument is against the other poster saying to accept that Winston might very well end up in columbus. I think it is much safer to say that although there is a chance, it is pretty unlikely. Let's not forget also that it is always talked about how a coach being hired at this point in the season is pretty hard to pull kids and build relationships that quick. Plus it's not like Meyer has been at another school recruiting and building relationships over the last few years with tons of prospects. It has been stated in several recruiting circles that Meyer will have much more of an affect in recruiting starting next year.

Given some of the wide open receivers that Miller missed against us I would say there's a chance someone new could win the job. Not necessarily a good chance, but a legit change nonetheless.

Pretty sure Winston is a high level baseball prospect with a chance of not playing CFB at all due to the mlb draft.  Anyway if he takes the college route, he likely to play both sports...IMO no way he leaves the Southeast for big ten football/baseball

If I'm Dunn and I see the type of recruit Urban is going after, I bolt for UM.

Another interesting point is Braxton Miller running the spread.  One of the main reasons Miller never entertained UM was because RRod ran the spread and Miller wanted more of a pro style offense.  I find it ironic that Miller is now running the spread.

Is listed as a dual-threat, but don't doubt that the kid can't sling the ball. He was extremely impressive at the Elite 11, and that performance ultimately vaulted him ahead of Kiel and into five-star status. Winston is the type of qb that can play in any system. At this point it is hard to argue that Winston is not a passing qb with extremely good running skills. He really is the total package.

One of my friends is a huge FSU fan and he's really excited about Winston being a Seminole. At the same time though, he has the option of playing baseball and last I heard he wasn't sure of what he wanted to pursue after high school. Kid is a heck of an athlete though. Be interesting how his story plays out.

KAYSHIN15

This kid is not going to OSU. We should worry about something else. He's just taking a free trip to Dumpsterville. If he decommits to FSU then all signs point to him staying at home and playing for Saban.

I'm from Alabama and all my family and friends followed this kid's recruitment like a bunch of obsessed maniacs and they all thought this kid was going to Bama. When he committed to FSU, I remember them feeling like the rug was pulled from under them. Ohio was never really on the radar and his ability to play baseball was a huge part of him wanting to stay down south. Last time I checked, Ohio wasn't a big baseball school...

That it is not.  I see he visited LSU as well.  Like many say, I can't see why he would go to OSU when he could possibly start soon at FSU, or possibly LSU or Bama...maybe even get more money.  If I were him and wanted to win a National Championship, logic says to stay in the SEC.

That being said, I probably shouldn't put myself in a high schooler's body...that would be illegal.

Last time I checked, it is not.  Which is why I said if he wanted to win a National Championship, he most likely should consider the SEC (LSU or Bama).

Tommy Schutt is also visiting Ohio for those who care to keep tabs on such things.  PSU needs to get themselves a coach, and fast, before they lose out on their own prospects, let alone uncommitted prospects that have been favoring PSU forever, like Spence.

Any ten-year period that one side wins decisively can't be called a "war."

If all it took was 5 star players to win games, we would get trounced by Notre Dame every year. We can beat anybody. Meyer has a lot to prove. He conveniently quit right when he was trending down.

Did we not expect Urb to pull in high 4-5 star recruits? Whats the big deal when kids visit Ohio or even commit for that matter? He's not going to get every big named kid in the US now that he's in C-bus.

Even if he gets close, we should still calm down. Hoke and Co. will continue to pull kids in on the same level and coach’em up like they did this year. Hell, according to all of the recruiting sites Ohio had more talent than us this year even with the absence of their free tattoo beneficiaries.

Bottom line is, we know how Urb recruits and it seems like some of us are panicking just a tad bit. Are we forgetting the late season strides our offense made? Are we forgetting that our Defense jumped nearly 100 spots statistically in multiple categories? What’s my point you ask?? SCREW OHIO AND URB!!!! Let him bring in Ray Lewis and Jerry Rice for all I care. His #1 Assistant coach and recruiter when he was in Florida is on the sideline of the good guys (Mr. Mattison) and if we can have a year like this with RR’s undersized and average speed guys, imagine what can and will be done when we get guys to fit our system.

Please everyone calm down on the Ohio recruiting updates and Go Blue!!!
