Jake Ryan tears ACL, out indefinitely
Also a release on MGoBlue.com. Lovely news to hear.
http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/032013aab.html
At least we have some depth at LB for once.
************kkkkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!
Depth yes, an exact replacement for an All-B1G JMFR, not exactly. What is this with knee injuries to key defensive players for entire seasons?
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
You've got to be fucking kidding me
FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shit.
I don't think any amount of kittens and Kate Upton can remedy this tradgedy. =(
I feel really bad for him, and for the team. Ryan is a great player and good leader. That really, really sucks. I hope he heals as soon as practicable.
It is not often practicable, to use 'practicable' in a sentence, especially not more than once.
It seems way too early in Spring Practice for this type of thing to be happening!!! NOOOO. Who steps up?
The good news is that this injury happened way early in spring practice. Who knows what the actual diagnosis is, but if it's a "simple" ACL tear he could be back in six months and ready for the conference schedule.
son of a fuck.
.
At least it's now and not during the season so that someone has all of spring and summer to step up before the season. Hope Jake recovers quickly though, he's a great guy and football player.
Rough timing. Spring practice is always a tough time for a serious injury because it is not enough time to heal. Tough break to an awesome athlete. Lets hope he can rehab and recover.
That is the worst news for the defense. I got on to see a Hello post and all I got was a Hell-ish post. Dang man!
Someone say April Fools!!!! Please!!! Say April Fools!!!
I looked at my calendar with the hope that today was April 1st.
This just sucks, especially for Jake.
What does this mean for his future here? Will we see our first-ever 6th year Senior?
Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like most sixth year players get it because they missed their fifth year due to injury. Since Ryan still has 2014 to play (in addition to however soon he can return in 2013), I would sort of doubt that he gets a sixth year...if he even applies for one.
I'm pretty sure that the initial redshirt season has to be due to an injury. I don't think that was the case with Ryan.
Can we get him on the AP ACL recovery plan?
But seriously, he's done until next spring. Maybe he can practice during bowl season but I doubt it. Fuck.
Fuck. Shit.
I'm trying to put together a series of swears to match the gravity of the situation.
It's just not possible. It's just.... not possible
What's the opposite of scrumtrulescent?
Fuck you, Angry Jake Ryan ACL Hating God!!
<Gnashes teeth>
That sucks for you guys. I love this kids motor.
he may be able to play this season?
9 month recovery, according to WebMD or some variation of that. :-\
possible chance at a medical redshirt for him to come back as a super senior.
Not unless you have a spare ALC lying around in your closet. You do, don't you? Please say that you do!
ALC? Good plan. Now is a good time to break out the emergency alcohol from my closet.
He could have mine if it would speed up his recovery time, I only use it for some light weekend jogging, I'm sure I could manage without it.
Jake has been my favorite Michigan athlete for the better part of two years. More than any other reason, I was excited for the fall to see what jake would do.
Now for the part of my reaction beyond my own selfishness. Nobody deserves a full recovery and all the success his potential should bring him more than jake Ryan. Get well soon jake
i think i was just punched there
fuck that...I want some poetic justice this season for this football gods!
plus shit, bitch, cunt, ass. gosh freaking damn it this sucks.
bad April Fool's Day joke. This sucks.
What did we do to deserve this, ye football gods?!? Was Denard's elbow not enough?!?
DAMNIT ALL HE WAS MY FAVORITE FUCKING PLAYER THIS YEAR ARRRRRRGHHHHH
Although its nice to be informed (thank you), i think I would feel better if I was able to punch you in the face the moment I read this.
That's huge..yes we have depth, but hes an all American. Fuck
Wow...I was so excited for this years linebacker group. God damn it this hurts
Soul dong shot
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
:(
Your "Frowney Rodriguez" avatar is pretty damn appropriate for this thread.
The Good News is that UM's LB corps is probably the unit best situated to overcome such a devastating blow. The Bad News is that it is still pretty unlikely that anyone who fills in for Ryan will perform at the level he was likely to achieve this coming season.
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
There's an alternate reality in which a perfecty healthy Blake Countess and Jake Ryan are both coming back off of All B1G seasons and getting ready to lead the back 7. Fuck this shit.
What are the chances he plays this year at all?
a mid-season comeback is the reasonable best case
Fuck
Fuck
Fuckity fuck.
I normally hate all the swearing, but I heartily concur with all your F's and U's. Get better fast, Jake!!!! Srsly. We need you.
Best player on the defense out until 2014? Yep, that sounds about right.
is arguably the worst news ever
Hope him a speedy recovery. On a sidenote, whoever it was that downvoted this thread is an absolute jackass.
It's not an easy thing to do when you're itching to get back out there, but I hope he waits until he's fully recovered to return. Sometimes guys come back too quickly and reaggravate the injury.
Is Dr. James Andrews in Ann Arbor yet?
Shit. This is no bueno.
At least we have a fifth year senior to back him up? That's all I got.
I know he already redshirted a year, but what are the chances that he can get medical hardship? I mean, we have seen the NCAA do this before, no?
It is certainly possible that Ryan could be granted a 6th year. I really doubt he will stay around to even ask for one though as he was a genuine risk to leave early after the 2013 season.
I've been reading some more and it sounds like there is really a very slim chance that he'd get it. His original redshirt wasn't due to a medical hardship, so he isn't eligible under the rules for a medical redshirt where we usually see people get a 6th year. It sounds like he is able to apply for a redshirt after his fifth year, but those seemingly rarely get granted. And as you metioned, he'd most likely be gone by then.
Jordan Shipley of Texas was granted a 6th year medical hardship. It happens. It's just rare.
We've never had one. I think Spencer Brinton got 6 years. But I think it had to do with him going on some kind of Mormon mission.
Correct me?
The difference with Shipley is that he was injured in both 2004 and 2005. Jake Ryan's original redshirt wasn't due to an injury so it isn't the same situation.
no no no no no no no
On defense in 12 month span for a college football team?
Is it too early for a "What are you drinking?" thread
On the positive with his medical redshirt he will be able to have even longer hair and by his senior year he will turn into a lion.
can someone please start the "look on the bright-side!" thread? items include:
1) you always wanted to see how far you could jam a pen into your thigh?
2) his hair will be super amazing next time he steps on the field
3) injury redshirt means one more additional year of Viking rage
4) see #1
Fuck. That is all.
Dang, that really hurts. Our best playmaker on defense out for the season...ouch. At least we have decent depth here. I know Gordon will get the start but, McCray...will need to be ready to contribute immediately, no RS for you. Man, that hurts 2 years in a row to lose a top playmaker to an ACL.
Brennen Beyer to SLB?
One good thing to come out of this; unless he's had a previous year in that same ACL, they generally come back stronger than they were. After the second tear however...not so good my friend.
My god! WHY!
Might hit the bottle after work.
why wait until after work?
+100 to you sir
I'm drinking my tears away now while curled in a ball, under my desk at work. No, I don't work for the city of Detroit where such behavior is encouraged. Ughhhhh, I would rather wear notre dame's basketball uniforms for a month than this tragedy. Please lord, noooooo.
damn damn damn damn damn DAMN!
Recovery time for ACL tears is 6-12 months. Most definitely out for the season. Damn, Damn, Damn! Someone will step up, someone will step up, someone will...
I wouldn't be entirely opposed to moving Bolden to SAM as a backup to Gordon... We have several capable inside linebackers. I wasn't a big fan of Beyer at SAM, but at least he has experience there and we would still have two weakside ends with playing experience in Clark/Ojemudia.
It might be too early for rationalization, Magnus. The board is in full meltdown. MELTDOWN!
ERMAGERD, ER.C. L. TER!!!!!!
I think Bolden is already a backup at WILL and MIKE, might as well get him to back up SAM...
I tore my ACL in high school (ACL only). I was cleared for full contact and explosive exercises 3-4 months later. So maybe there's an outside chance he could be ready to play by season's end?
Sorry if I'm trying to be too glass half full, here.
maybe by the bowl game if he gets on the AP magically ACL recovery plan and we get a later bowl but there isnt much reason for him to try and rush back for that.
The ACL God hates us.
threw up
in my mouth.
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! This is some Iowa voodoo...I know it!
You need disrupters on defense and Jake was easily our most disruptive player. Even when he didn't make the tackle, Jake was blowing up plays all year long.
You aren't going to replace a guy like Jake, period. What you have to hope is that several other guys step their game up, if they don't the defense is not going to be the same. I thought our defense was going to have to have several guys step up to be close to as good as last year before Ryan was lost, now it's just really important that young guys develop quickly.
We've basically lost our 5 best players(Ryan, Roh, Demens, Kovacs, Campbell) off that defense from last year and a 6th (Countess) is coming back from ACL surgery himself. I have faith in MAttison though that we will still be able to field a top tier defense.
Personally, I have no fear that UM will be able to adequately replace the output of Roh, Demens and Campbell. None of those guys did anything really "special" at their positions. They weren't liabilities (for Campbell that was an improvement on his previous three seasons) but they weren't big "impact" players either.
Kovacs is an odd case of a guy whose loss will hurt in some ways and won't in others. Probably a slight downgrade in total as far as replacing Kovacs but not a devastating one.
Best player on defense. Sweet
At least these ACL tears aren't happening to our best defensive players. Oh, wait. What? Fuck.
The expectation is for the position.
....on the way back from lunch, then saw this thread. Terrible news, and I wish Jake Ryan a speedy and full recovery. His presence and production will be missed out there, but all the same, Hoke's comment did remind us, I believe, that JMFR can still be just that in a way, even while recovering:
"I know he will attack his rehabilitation just like he does everything else and will be back when he's ready."
Still, in the interim.....damnit.
You know it's bad when Brady Hoke admits it. Not just a Boo Boo, unfortunately.
Now, the best we can hope for his a "medical" for a sixth year.
ACL takes our best defensive player in back to back years. How many other teams can say that?
I think it's highly questionable that Blake Countess was our best defensive player last year, especially considering the fact that this one guy named Jake Ryan was healthy last season.
I was talking about who was projected to be our best player, which should have been obvious given the fact that Ryan played and Countess didn't.
I still don't think the part-time starting cornerback who had zero interceptions in 2011 was projected to be our best defensive player in 2012 by many people.
I agree that such expectations were silly, but I think they were still out there, in large numbers.
People always like to project greatness onto underclassmen who perform well, and I remember a lot of people saying Countess was to be our best defender. The reason I remember this is because I, like you, thought it was a stretch.
In regards to Jake Ryan, he was clearly going to be our best player, and one of the best in the B1G. His ability to chase down plays while being blocked is the best I have ever seen from one of our guys. He ignores would be blockers in the way that very few collegiate players do. This is a big loss.
But the expectation is for the position. Just as Raymon Taylor stepped up last season, I expect Cam Gordon to as well.
Man what a gut punch. He was so fun to watch, hope he can make it back healthy!
Same with some guy named Bledsoe. Next Guy up, this is football.
*(^&%#%[email protected]#%(^^%^_))+&*(&^[email protected]#[email protected]$%$(&_)(+)(*_*)^(^$*&@#*$^%)*)(_)_)(*&^%$#@$%&*()_*(&#$%^&*)(&%%$&*(^*()*_(**(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is all.
I think he'll get a medical redshirt. The only positive spin that I can put on it is next year's linebacking corps will have a hell of a lot of experience on it...
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't think he will get a red shirt. He's already been redshirted so it is highly unlikely the NCAA will grant him a 6th season of eligibility, unless they can go back and prove he was also injured his freshman year and that's the reason he was kept out.
Fuck...Cunt...Bubbles... fuck today...
I'm sitting in class about to take an exam I didn't study for, and I'm more concerned about this news.
GAWD DAAAAAAAMMIT
I cant believe this shit. This will be a tough one to swallow.
For my first post
FFFuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuckkkkk! : /
well said
Don't shoot the messanger...but damn messanger...I mean C'MON!!!
At least I hope his hair made it out ok. :)
i got that sick feeling in my stomach.. you know the one..
Well that sucks for Jake
BUT
Cam MotherFucking Gordon will be ready to go!
Anyone care to speculate on who becomes our backup at WILL assuming Morgan moves permanently to MIKE? Bolden seems like the backup at SAM and/or MIKE and Ross is the starting WILL, right? Will Poole, Jones, even McCray back up Ross? Basically how does this shake up the rest of the linebackers?
Cool, thanks Magnus! I especially like that you made me go your site to see the content;) Well, it's nice that we have that many options. It seems like Ojemudia may have the best skill set and body to make the switch but I don't see the coahces going that route. I'm thinking Gordon goes there and Bolden backus up both at SAM and MIKE, Morgan takes waay more snaps at MIKE than WILL, and Ross becomes the full time starter at WILL...then we hope against hope that all four are healthy all year long or that's when the real trouble begins. Which option would be your preference or were they in order?
They were pretty much in order.
And I figured there were way too many words/options to spend so much time copying/pasting. Might as well do it the easy way...
The only thing keeping me from tears is knowing Cam is a senior with experience, and he did at one time show some promise. Got beat out because JMFR, obviously.
Please, Mattison, make it ok.
What the actual fuck! and he was redshirted. Fuck things and stuff.
That he'd likely not be eligble for due to being redshirted electively as a freshman.
I didn't know this previously either. This was covered elsewhere in the comments and also the front page. Truthfully previous to this injury I thought he might only be on the team for 1 more year then to NFL...but this is not the way I'd like his 1 more year.
Best of luck to JMFR on a full recovery. This still f'n sucks like getting dong punched by King Kong
After hearing this F*ing news I jumped off my kitchen counter with a noose around my neck. Lucky for me my counter is only 3 feet high and I had 6 foot of rope but I meant well. I decided to come here to vent instead of trying again. JMFR you will be missed this year! I'm still hoping to play Ohio in back to back weeks at seasons end!
Fuck is the only appropriate word. Fuck fuck fuck.
I wish JMFR a quality recovery.
While trying to navigate away from this horrible news, I accidently bookmarked it. Not the thing I want to be able to find easily. I'm not past the denial stage yet!
Wow...So many "F-Bombs" again and again on this site.
I won't allow my 12 year old to read about his favorite team on this site because of the lack of common maturity when posting.
Dropping the "F-Bomb" every other post just shows a lack of maturity and credibility.
When are the administrators going to start cracking down on the language?
It just lowers this blog site's reputation and credibility.
Never understood why people get so worked up about swear words. Severe words for a severe situation.
Will Heniger (sp?) tore his ACL on march 30, 2010 and dressed the last 6 games. Plus we got Cam gordon.

Whatever, man. We all know 12-year-olds can't read.
Shut the fuck up douche
...
First off, before I start venting, I hope Jake has a speedy recovery, and we can see him on the field whenever he is ready. His presence on the field is going to be sorely, sorely missed.
Michigan must be second to Purdue in terms of bad injuries to key players. Countess tears his ACL, Denard has a bad nerve injury, Fitz breaks his leg, now Jake MF Ryan tears his ACL.
I know we have solid depth at linebacker, and Ross/Bolden/Morgan will be great. But this is like a swift kick to the balls, and then when you're lying on the ground crying in pain, you get kicked in the balls again just for the hell of it. Torn ACL's are bad no matter who they happen to on our team, but in terms of having to replace production, this could not be any worse on the defensive side of the ball. Its probably the equivalent of losing Gardner, Gallon or Lewan on offense for next year (for the love of all that is holy, knock on wood).
At any rate, Cam Gordon is going to have to step the fuck up, and Mike McCray can probably kiss a redshirt goodbye. His level of talent might have gotten him playing time anyway, but now he's going to be expected to contribute from Day 1 instead of hoping for mop-up duty. Not the kind of pressure I want on a true freshman. If only he could have been an early enrollee. We've got a LOT of tackles, sacks and TFL that we've got to replace right now. If there's any silver lining, at least it happened now instead of Fall camp.
Given the situation, I feel closing with the following is only appropriate: FUCCCCCCCKKKKKKK!!!!
and the only thing that will make this better is if the bball team goes deep. otherwise ill fall into a deep depression
stuff", but it tastes a lot like BS.
I hope it isn't as bad as the "Well Denard is out, but at least we got Bellomy" smoke.
Cam has at least played some in the past.
When Bellomy played vs Nebraska that was the first time he got meaningful playing time.
You have got to be bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeepen kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Torn ACL is gonna need time to heal... UGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
Massive punch to the dong
fuck practice
Practice. Not a game, not a game. Practice man.
Extremely unfortunate, yes, but we have a lot of good depth at his position and if he doesn't return in 2013 it just means we'll have him for another year. Also, maybe he can make a freakish Adrian Peterson-like recovery, I wouldn't count on it though.
No no no no no no no no
to wake up to. Speedy recovery JMFR
If this is not an early April fool's joke, then the AIRBG is doing some sidework in the off season. AIRBG you sir, are an asshole. Godspeed Jake.
I liked Ryan too.
Bad news...but I think he could return for the big ten season, right? 6 months from now is late september. i don't think his season is gone...
Theoretically, he could return by the start of the conference schedule. But that's an absolute best-case scenario. I don't know much about ACL tears, but I'm guessing a six month recovery time would mean it would have to only be a partial tear and no other damage to the ligaments around it. And he'd need to absolutely bust his ass off in re-hab. Not that I'm worried about him not doing that.
It's certainly possible that he could be back by the conference opener. But if I were you, I'd brace for the possibility that Jake won't see the field until maybe bowl workouts next winter. And at that point, they might just not want to risk anything, so they'll tell him to sit out until winter workouts. Very real chance Jake won't play again until App State 2014.
DG's redshirt year for a healthy Jake Ryan. Satan, make it so.
Shift Bolden to Sam? Or move either Beyer or Clark to Sam? Gordon will start but there needs to be rotation. can't expect McCray to step in right? Thoughts? We do have good depth here at least.
WDE has solid depth with Clark/Ojemudia/Charlton. SAM now has Gordon/McCray
i'm not sure these press releases allow one to understand the exact nature of the injury, prognosis for recovery or time table for recovery. obviously, this is all protected, confidential information.
worst case scenario he is out for the entire year,- there is a lot of linebacker depth and a lot of options. cam gordon has been touted recently and might be ryan's replacement.
if devin gardner has a serious injury, there may be no viable options and the prospects for a winning season would be dubious.
I don't think the loss of Ryan will effect the number of games won/loss due to good depth. Where if Gardner went down it would absolutely effect the number of games won/loss.
don't neg the messenger.
Rough news for the day. Get well soon Jake!
Not worth a post of its own on the MGoBoard because it's unsubstantiated speculation but...
Per the 11w comment section, there's this from former OSU player Reid Fragel:
Reid Fragel tweeted "Karma at its finest" about 45 minutes ago. I worry that was in regards to Ryan, I hope not. He's one of Michigan's best defenders-so when Michigan and OSU play, Michigan will be light one of its best players, therefore the Game will be a little less awesome=Everyone loses.
That could be about anything but what makes things a bit darker is this follow-up from an MSU fan
@Fragel77 if this is in regards to what I think it is, then yes, karma is an AHole
The same MSU fan also tweets:
Jake Ryan torn ACL....no more flow, a tweet that is favorited by Fragel.
Now, certainly the MSU tweeter is not representative of all Spartan fans and I'd like to think that Fragel isn't representative of all his former teammates, but... yeah.
I'll give him one of mine! Yep thats what I.ll do!
jake ryan ....i feel for you bro...
btw...can we get a gif for the play in which he ragdolled the qb to get to the ball carrier?
