What does this mean? Who will replace him? Will we see a Ross-Bolden-Morgan LB lineup?

Fuck.

ANN ARBOR, Mich.University of Michigan football senior/junior linebacker Jake RyanWestlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) is out indefinitely with a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in Tuesday's practice, the team announced today (Wednesday, March 20).

"You always hate when anyone gets injured and unfortunately we've dealt with our share of injuries in the last 12 months," said Michigan coach Brady Hoke."We will support Jake to make sure he has everything he needs to get through this.I know he will attack his rehabilitation just like he does everything else and will be back when he's ready."

Ryan led the Wolverines in 2012 with 88 tackles, 56 solo, 16 stops for loss, 4.5 sacks and four forced fumbles.

He earned All-Big Ten second team honors by the media and was the Roger Zatkoff Award recipient as U-M's top linebacker.Dating back to 2011, Ryan had tallied a tackle-for-loss in 17 of his last 19 games.

Your "Frowney Rodriguez" avatar is pretty damn appropriate for this thread.

The Good News is that UM's LB corps is probably the unit best situated to overcome such a devastating blow. The Bad News is that it is still pretty unlikely that anyone who fills in for Ryan will perform at the level he was likely to achieve this coming season.

There's an alternate reality in which a perfecty healthy Blake Countess and Jake Ryan are both coming back off of All B1G seasons and getting ready to lead the back 7. Fuck this shit.

It's not an easy thing to do when you're itching to get back out there, but I hope he waits until he's fully recovered to return. Sometimes guys come back too quickly and reaggravate the injury.

I know he already redshirted a year, but what are the chances that he can get medical hardship?  I mean, we have seen the NCAA do this before, no?

It is certainly possible that Ryan could be granted a 6th year. I really doubt he will stay around to even ask for one though as he was a genuine risk to leave early after the 2013 season.

I've been reading some more and it sounds like there is really a very slim chance that he'd get it.  His original redshirt wasn't due to a medical hardship, so he isn't eligible under the rules for a medical redshirt where we usually see people get a 6th year.  It sounds like he is able to apply for a redshirt after his fifth year, but those seemingly rarely get granted.  And as you metioned, he'd most likely be gone by then.

On the positive with his medical redshirt he will be able to have even longer hair and by his senior year he will turn into a lion.

can someone please start the "look on the bright-side!" thread? items include:

1) you always wanted to see how far you could jam a pen into your thigh?

2) his hair will be super amazing next time he steps on the field

3) injury redshirt means one more additional year of Viking rage

4) see #1

Dang, that really hurts.  Our best playmaker on defense out for the season...ouch.  At least we have decent depth here.  I know Gordon will get the start but, McCray...will need to be ready to contribute immediately, no RS for you.  Man, that hurts 2 years in a row to lose a top playmaker to an ACL.

One good thing to come out of this; unless he's had a previous year in that same ACL, they generally come back stronger than they were. After the second tear however...not so good my friend.
